So, I had a good year last year with 173 jackpots and corresponding w2g's. Doing my taxes now and apparently there is a limit of 30 w2gs that if I go over I cannot efile. Program says I must mail my return in. Anyone heard of this Before? It's gonna be quite a large envelope I need to mail. I plan on trying to finish by the end of February and if it seems overwhelming I'll pay a firm to do it. But id really rather do it myself as the rest of my taxes aren't too complicated. It's just the sheer volume.

There may be a workaround.

I saw on another forum a suggestion to summarize by totaling all w2g's for each casino. Then you should be ok as long as you didn't hit jackpots at more than 30 casinos.

I saw that as well but since I need to list other information like transaction number specific to each jackpot I can see this causing issues. Not to mention all the other crap like date won and cashier who paid me. I just don't think I would attempt that on my own. Safest way seems to just print out about a 200 page return and mail it in. Since I owe a nice chunk of change I'm sure the enclosed check and return promptly. Or maybe not. No clue. Just looking for anyones option on this matter.

My general impression from reading about taxes is that the IRS really doesn't care about those types of details. They care about total dollar amounts.

But I understand why you would want to proceed cautiously.

I've had the same issue using H&R Block software in the past. From what I've read, it is specific to that software and a pain in the butt. Supposedly, Turbo Tax is better at handling that and allows you to post totals instead of inputting all the info from each W2G.

Since I'm not a pro and not in a high tax state, now that the standard deduction has been doubled I won't be itemizing. Best plays have dried up so just trying to avoid W2G's altogether.

Can anyone else confirm if turbo tax allows posting totals? If so I'll get that program. The cost savings of not printing and mailing would more than pay for the software.

I read a bit more about turbo tax. Looks like that might be the way to go. I would just like to hear from some gamblers on here who have used that software and their experience with it on large quantities of w2g's, greater than 30.

Last year I used H&R Block 2016 Deluxe. I only had a handful of w2g's, but the software didn't give me any trouble. For each casino, I filled in the "Payer Information" including the casino's federal ID #. The software also displays a worksheet for entry of up to 18 detailed items from the w2g, but I left everything blank except #1 Gross winnings. (Item #9 was my SSN, which I think populated automatically.)

Once you go past 30 worksheets that is where the problem arises. Last year I had exactly 30 w2gs I had to file for 2016 do I didn't encounter that problem. This year, 173. Thankfully I came out ahead. If i had lost for the year and had to deal with this id be furious instead of just really annoyed.

You may want to look back at your 2016 return to see what was actually included on the document submitted to the IRS. The software asks for a lot of worksheet details that aren't actually printed anywhere on the final document, and are therefore never seen by the IRS.

Even though I only had a few w2g's, I summarized my totals by casino. If you were to summarize, presumably it would drop you below 30.

Can't summarize it in HR Block program. Gonna see what turbo tax has and borrow a friend's copy.

After putting in 32 w2g's into turbo tax I went to e-file and it said I could so it looks like the 30 limit is just for HR Block software. Just gotta key in everything else again.
