Most of you have probably read about the tragedy Doc and Mrs. Doc experienced earlier today. I find it frustrating to be able to do so little for friends in the face of such a situation, and I don't think I'm alone in that. So I'm asking for your help with this gesture.
Doc and Mrs. Doc have become personal friends with many folks through the forum, including me. He's been a strong contributing member since the first months of the forum.
Along with the gut - wrenching loss of their son, they are facing unexpected and probably high-dollar expenses in the near future, including cancelled plans in the West and the associated plane tickets, travel and hotels in the Northeast, possible legal representation, and settling their son's affairs.
I am starting the hat - passing with $100 in my PayPal account. I will provide my PayPal email via PM to anyone else who wishes to join me, for whatever amount they wish to send. Please make a note on the donation that the money is for Doc, and send it from your PayPal account as friends and family so it has no fees attached. (Credit cards, non-members, and non-US transactions have a small handling fee by PayPal ).
100% of any money I receive earmarked for Doc will get to him. There are at least a dozen people on here who can vouch for me on that, probably more, but I will ask the Wizard to audit my PayPal account privately if anyone has any questions.
I will accept donations for 2 weeks, until April 30, 2017, and then transfer the entire amount to Doc, hopefully before the bills come rolling in. I will keep donors and amounts private, except in the event of an audit, when I would release all info to the Wizard only.
Doc has said publicly that they are both retired, and budget carefully in order to enjoy their vacations and chip collecting. This is the only thing I can think of that would allow us to help them even a little. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
FWIW, I have not asked Doc's permission to do this, but I hope he will accept that we care and want to show it. It's the sort of thing that is best done privately, but this is the only way to tell the forum the hat is being passed.
Thanks again.

Made it to NJ & decided to log in to distract my head. First, I want to thank everyone for the kind messages I have received. Second, can we please back up and cancel the efforts of this thread? I do not want to seem unappreciative, but this is not really needed.
I confess that I frequently poor mouth and refer to myself as a cheapskate, but my wife and I are reasonably secure financially, and this whole matter will drain us emotionally and mentally but not in the wallet. I do not really know of any high-dollar expenses that will arise. The cancelled trip will cost me at most ~$40 that I paid to redeem a Delta companion certificate and not even that if we schedule another trip before that certificate expires. All other cancellations were free. We anticipate multiple trips to NJ to get all of this resolved, but it will just be the cost to drive our car here, and we will stay with my late brother's widow as we have numerous times before.
I have not yet figured out what all we will have to take care of or what needs to be done, but I really don't think money will be the problem. It will be the complexity, the details, the nuisance, and the emotions.
Thanks very much for the thought, but please just "No."

Doc,
I have no choice but to take you at your word on this.
I think you would be heartened to know how many people have already responded on your behalf. But I will cancel the hat - passing at this time.
Vaya con Dios, and please keep us updated as you can.
All,
Thank you so much for your generosity. Please do not go forward, those who already received the donation information.
