So far I have the following $1 coins gathered from 2013:
Mermaids
Fremont Casino
New York New York
Golden Nugget
Looking to diversify the coin part of chip collection and looking for casinos near the strip or near fremont st. Any advice about vegas slot token/coins is appreciated. Most of the time I just put $1 in the machine (normally the oversized machines you have to stand and play) and cashout or play a spin then cashout.
The tokens that I have collected from tables in the Las Vegas area include the following:
Barcelona (N. Las Vegas), Caesars Palace, Hard Rock, Klondike Sunset (Henderson), Longhorn, Poker Palace (N. Las Vegas), Silver Nugget (N. Las Vegas), Silver Saddle, and Skyline (Henderson).
I have no idea which of those are still available. If you are interested in what any of those look like, photos of each of them have been posted in the Casino Chip of the Day thread, with an index of links on the first page of the thread.
I also have collected tokens at table games in a number of Nevada casinos outside of the Las Vegas area as well as casinos in Colorado, New Mexico, and the Caribbean.
Quote: ajemeisterIn doing some research, I also found out about Silver Strike machines which apparently give out commemorative silver coins which sounds kinda cool.. anyone ever play one of these machines?
Yes, I have one somewhere from about 20 years ago. They come in a little acrylic holder when you win one. I noticed there were at least a couple Silver Strike machines downtown still, my visit in January. Check the Plaza, 4Queens, and Fremont (sorry I can't recall where exactly I saw them).
The same level as the Craps Pit And Keno Parlor.
You have to buy the paper wrapped rolls from an attendant.
They're the $1 Tokens stamped with the The Cal or Boyd logo.
The machines are 9/6 JOB, 8/5 BP and maybe some type of DW?
They're antiques.
Mostly the older Hawaiian Clientele playing them.
Grab a plastic cup and carry your winning coins to redeem at the cage.

These seem fun to collect. Anyone know the hand cycle for one?

I saw one at the Fremont last March. Don't know if it is still there. I can't imagine that they would be a hit with the casinos since you cannot recycle your winnings like a "credit" or a coin. The opportunity to win it back is lost.

correct me if I'm wrong.. but I'm pretty sure these things are still considered "credit" much like other slot tokens and can be redeemed as such if necessary.
The only thing I'm basing this off of is my understanding of this article http://vitalvegas.com/silver-strikes-slots-machines-spit-collectible-coins/

My mistake. The machine I saw dispensed ingots, pendants and coins. I recall a machine that dispensed diamonds too.
I can understand how the machine you reference is good for raising cash, since a $100 winner might not redeem it for currency. It's like an $8 Chinese New Year promo chip.
Quote: ajemeisternot gonna lie.. I'm getting pretty excited to find these Silver Strike machines.. I don't know how I never knew they existed
Just curious to find out if you ended up having much luck locating & playing any of these machines?
I'm planning to hopefully snag at least one of those Silver Strike commemorative coins on my next Vegas trip!
The slots were all regular 1-line 3-reel 25-cent machines, and you had to get a "Silver Strike" emblem on the third reel to win a token. When it hit, a big carousel at the top of the machine would spin around and ultimately kick out one of the coins for you to reach up and take.
We were lucky enough to get three of the coins in the blue cases, which are decorated in color.
Below is the breakdown of the casinos where we won them:
3 from the Mirage
1 from 4 Queens
2 from El Cortez
2 from Venetian
3 from Palazzo (only two in the pic since I gave one to my son)
Anyway, it was a lot of fun tracking down the machines at the various properties and then snagging a few tokens!

I remember those! I thought about keeping them as a souvenir, but opted to cash out and just remember the experience on Fremont Street. Which I still do, almost 20 years later.
Quote: blount2000Got back from my Vegas trip a few days ago and was able to harvest several of the Silver Strike commemorative tokens while we were there.

Very cool blount2000! Not that you would, but could you take them back to the cage later and exchange them for cash like a chip?
Also, where it the picture of the latest tiki mug?

Quote: rsactuaryand so what are the value of these coins? Is there a market for them? Are they made of precious metals? or just plated?
Although we kept all of our coins, you could take them to the cage and exchange them for $10 each (see gold sticker at bottom of first pic below). Also, on the outer edge of each coin it says "10 Dollar Gaming Token".
It threw me off at first that the machine would indicate 40 credits paid when a token was won. When I saw my actual credits had not gone up, I wondered what the deal was. But then it made sense since they are worth $10 each. I initially thought I had won the token AND 40 credits for hitting the Silver Strike symbol, but sadly that was not the case. Just me being a little greedy I suppose. ;)
There was a sign on the top part of the machine to the left of the card reader that said some of the coins were made of .999 fine silver (and if so they would be stamped as such). The sign said all other tokens are silver plated brass. The dispenser carousel had clear columns for the stacks of tokens (see second pic below) and I could see a couple of coins encased in red, so maybe those were the ones made of real silver. All of mine are regular ones.

Also, where is the picture of the latest tiki mug?
Unfortunately, my favorite tiki spot - Frankie's Tiki Room - had not released any new mugs since my last visit.
However, to my delight, a brand new tiki bar has opened up over on Spring Mountain Road called The Golden Tiki. We were able to get two mugs from there which were mighty nice additions to my Vegas tiki mug collection. I also enjoyed a free shot of their private reserve rum using a voucher I had printed off of their website before we headed to Vegas. Very tasty indeed!
It was a great visit to Vegas, and I'll hopefully have my complete trip report composed and posted up before too long.
