What crappy weather we have been having. Yesterday was only 100 degrees, but very humid for Vegas. This morning seems even worse. I went for a short walk around the neighborhood, by which time I was drenched. Luckily, it was time for a plunge in the pool. :)

Now, I grew up in Florida and lived 8 years in Philadelphia before finding my way to Vegas 5 years ago, so I know a little about humidity. I know enough to know that I shouldn't be complaining about 45-50% humidity. But let's face it....I am spoiled. We are used to 3-5% humidity. When it gets up to 50% @ 105 degrees, like today it is draining and just gross. Let's hope this little monsoonal period where our weather is coming up from Mexico is short lived.

Oh yeah, that's the other thing...rain! we have been getting rain around the Valley for several nights now. .12 inch there. 1/4 inch here. Funny thing on the news 2 nights ago. Flamingo and Boulder highway had severe flooding issues....total rainfall for that area....13/100 of an inch. I have yet to figure out how that happens. ???

I love dark clouds and no sun. I wish it would last longer here. My days consist of figuring out the optimal amount of time I need to be out in the sun in between A/C....

Back in the days of mob rule, they kept telling everyone we are in the middle of a desert no one would come here if it were not for the casinos. The old Imperial Palace land was cheap because it was a flood drain. Temperature, winds, .... if those one arm bandits are not paying you to be there, why are there?

I love the Vegas summer weather! about 10 years ago in the middle of August we were by the Luxor pool and what seemed like a monsoon hit - the sky went dark and the temp dropped like 20 degrees in 5 minutes, they threw us out of the pool, it was pretty cool.... the suck part was the next day we had to take an alternate route home because I15 was still flooded....

I've been to Vegas about 20 times and have hit some kind of weather more than a few times - the best was the 2008 snowstorm....

J, do you adjust your playing schedule based on the weather? Just curious, as you can technically do your job at any time, 24 hours a day. But I'm sure you've discovered some times are better than others for getting the good conditions. I imagine it's a delicate balance of heat (from the pit) vs. crowds. Lots of people around = easier to fly under the radar, but too many tourists eating your high cards.

The mercury just broke 100 here along the river at 12:45 p.m.

"But, its a dry heat" and I say, it's dry in the oven too, but that doesn't mean I will stick my head in it.

Weather is all personal preference. Whenever I have been in Vegas (and Phoenix), all my pores get super dry. I have to carry eye drops and chap stick, and drink water like crazy. But of course I am acclimated to a very humid climate. And I dislike getting sweaty also. Maybe the solution is to just not be hot at all? :)

Flooding can vary on many factors but two that I know of are the slope/grade of the ground surface, and the porosity of the ground/soil to absorb water. I don't know the geography of those regions... But if they are not properly sloped to divert water to drains/ditches... Or worse if the surrounding land all slopes down to a point/valley ... And/or if the ground material is hard rocks (and not soil) (I honestly don't know the absorptive capacity of sand)... These all might be factors.
