TBH I don't like Like Vegas as much as other places, I have roots here that are hard to break. I really like places like Washington, Organ, I would prefer to live near a place like Yosemite or Yellow Stone. I like the rain and stormy weather including snow, I love WATER and grass ( I'm an Aquarius after all, but i disregard astrology) streams, rivers and lakes, Fishing and camping and some light hunting I prefer not to kill A Deer anymore, but i wouldn't lose sleep if I did. I would love to live near a railroad love the sound of a rumbling train puts me asleep fast .Quote: TomspurI don't want to hijack your thread Axel but I was just wondering, apart from gaming, what is your favorite part of living in Vegas?
24 hr food is nice. Comedy clubs are cool, They do have nice places to live in Vegas that look like any other community. I'm numb to the excitement and don't really think about all the stuff you can do here or whats really going on, been there done that. Vegas seems very small to me.
Just knowing I have access to all the things is nice.
I like to go to Mt Charleston during the winter.
I don't like the desert much. I do like to go ride dune buggy's Looking to go soon.
I used to do a lot of Jet skiing with friends @ Lake Mead. I will again this summer (Why no casinos at Lake mead, Dam it ?)
I used to have a lot of BBQ party's at my place
I like shooting pool when I get a chance I used to play a lot. ( A sad subject now, due to this http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/mom-son-slain-drugged-driver-waste-skin-article-1.1729344 RIP kadar Brown. Very nice, cool guy, what a wast, he was a friend of mine, I meet him at the Las Vegas Cue Club. We went out and would party, double dated a few times, he played a few things for me. I just seen him not to long ago)
This is why I posted this. We have a small group that want to start doing more group things including some POKER and other games like chess, pool, board games.
I think Mike was interested as well, but ill let him comment on that if he would like. Members PM me if you are interested.
Yeah Vegas is an aquired taste. You need to understand how Vegas works.
I just love the wide open spaces. I love that I can drive wherever I want to go. I just love the independence. I love playing golf and there are so many choices. Also I love that we can live in the suburbs where, apart from the heat, you can completely forget about being so close to Sin City. I love having bbq's as, being South Africa, it is part of our culture and engrained in me.
Is it my favorite place to live in the workd, no. My ideal place would be Blue Grass country in Kentucky. Alternatively my 2nd most favorite spot would be a beach resort where there are no hurricanes or earthquakes to worry about.
Having said all this, Vegas is home right now and I really do love it.
I would be happy to have a couple bbq's, play pool or just hang out. I find it very difficult to meet good people in Vegas. Most of the people we meet are shallow or want to loan money. It would be great to just meet some regular guys who like the same things I do!
Oh and don't worry my home isn't under 24 hour surveillance, just my wife and dog is :)
My favorite thing, aside from having an almost infinite supply of stores, is that everything is open 24/7. I have enough free-food credits or food coupons (50% off, $15 off, etc.), for plenty of places that I can get a meal at any time of the day or night. When friends or family come to visit, they can either stay at my place (duh) or I can get them a cheap room at a few different stores. And since there are a lot of conventions, parties, concerts, and other big events, sometimes friends come to town for those things and I can meet up with them anyway (ie: they aren't here to visit me, but are here for a different reason, I can still meet up and chill for a few hours or an afternoon with them). One thing that does get old is "OMG you live in LV how do you not gamble all your money away or spend all your money on hookers and bars n shit?? let's go partyyyyy!!".
Obviously July and August are rough. I adjust my schedule and do the best you can. But I will gladly make that trade off for the rest of the year, especially winters. This winter was particularly mild. One cold week early in December and a few days in late February (when I say cold, I am talking high temps in the 50's...lol). Other than that high temps were in the mid 60's and 70 all winter, while the rest of the country spent the whole winter freezing and digging out. But, when you live in one of those 4 season places and make it through winter and spring finally breaks, with 70's weather, there is a sense of joy, a true sense of springtime, and I kind of miss that.
Also sports teams. I am a big sports guy. Back in Philly, I had season tickets to the Eagles and probably attended 40 Phillies games a year, often standing room only tickets. Obviously we don't have any major league sports teams here. The minor league teams are not the same. With major league teams, there is a sense of community when the team does bad or good. The Monday mornings when everyone felt down after the Eagles gave away a game. But also the joy, the literally dancing in the streets, hugging strangers, high-fiving and parade that I experienced when the Phillies won the world series. I miss that community connection to the teams.
And last, and this will seem silly....squirrels. :-) In Philly I lived a block off Rittenhouse Square, which was the center city park. I enjoyed watching the squirrel running around and jumping from tree to tree. No squirrels here. :-(

Last year I went through temps of 42+ C in June. I began to wonder whether there was an oven where I could cool off :) I swear it felt as if the Sun had been replaced by a blue star, except it was still yellow. It was worse, literally, than the summer of 85, late July, in the middle of the Negev desert (two days).
I can only imagine what July and August must be like in Vegas, and weep for all of you.

So, most Mondays? ;)
Quote: SGITI just joined this forum last week and I moved to Henderson almost a month ago. Still trying to get out of vacation mode and hoping to become a productive member of the employed community soon.
Welcome to both the forum and the Valley of Paradise, SGIT. Where did you move from? and what brings you to Vegas?
No need to get out of vacation mode. Life here is a vacation. :)
I am one that isn't bothered bh the heat in Las Vegas. The only time I am in the bad heat is walking to my car after leaving the office. Everything in Las Vegas is air conditioned and the only other time I am outdoors is for golf. I prefer teeing off between before 6am to beat the worst of the heat.
Quote: SGITMoved up from Tucson, Arizona. Decided that I needed a change of career and scenery a couple of months ago and finally worked up the balls to quit my job and move out here. Going to casino dealing school right now and hoping to find work in the very near future (hopefully before my bank account goes dry 😁).
I have to say...Tucson to Vegas.... did the scenery really change all that much? Isn't a cactus in the desert still a cactus in the desert...lol. (just kidding) Good luck to you, SGIT.
