Maryland live

all rewards card expires at the end of feb,2014.

why would a casino do this?
doesn't this add to their expenses? not to mention the chaos of thousands of people rushing to the rewards booth on march 1st?
plus with all those people waiting in line to get a new card instead of playing the machines?

I think the casino in nyc (resorts world) also does the same thing?

I can think of several reasons, all having to do with security and verification.

They don't want people on other people's cards, so they re-issue once a year and get a photo ID check of you.

CET will only change your address in person; they can update their info on you and mailout more efficiently; every postcard/whatever they get returned to sender costs them money (USPS charges back returns to corporate and bulk mailers). They won't let you update your personal info like address online.

They can re-set your points and comp balances, which brings people in during a slow month (Feb in your case) to play off their points and use their comps before they lose them.

If they get you used to upper-tier services, they can make you re-earn those tiers every year if they do a reset.

They can purge their lists of inactive players (though they retain that you were one, as far as getting new player perks).

They can invalidate the thousands of lost cards people left behind in machines or wherever that other people pick up and try to use (it's only a 4 digit pin; it can be broken), and lots of times careless employees just glance at the color of your card, not whether it has YOUR name on it, to get you into preferred lines or courtesy rooms.

Not that I know they're doing it for any of those reasons. But that's why I'd do it if I were running the joint.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Yeah Resorts world is every March 1st for renewal AND every Sept. 1st.

This applies only to upper tier cards, silver and up.

The classic beginners card or red card which they give has no expiration and most people have those so the lines aren't too crazy. Still there are lines at the rewards desk for renewals twice a year.

So if they don't get your money nobody can is my opinion. There doesn't have to be an expiration marked on the card, but to let other people know. You can't go to a competitor with an expired card and tier upgrade abandoning them. Just saying the expiration doesn't have to be written for them to make it useless when you're at your casino the card was issued.

New policies and plans can go into effect for all players at the same time. The hosts would go nuts if their customers were on different plans and comparing what each is getting. Mohegan Sun had just such an event when they rolled out their Momentum program on October 1st. A completely new system was put in place. New tiers, cards, rewards and rules. Billed as "now you can choose the benefits you want," but really it was "now you have to decide what to give up." Unless you were assigned Platinum or Triumph, the top two levels not mentioned in their public literature. As before, they get the run of the place. It would have been impossible to stagger this change across clients.

The atlanis casino in reno expires in june accross the board.

But the card is still useable in machines and for comps. The computer system keeps the same magnetic info on the card..so all areas that need swipes or insertion of a card will take the old card throughout the year.

There are times I forget my current card at home, and have a spare older card from the previous year....and it works just fine for everything

Therefore these is no need for a mad rush for everyone to get a card at the same time.

Its basically for the upper tier cut off for points earned.

the only place where it eventually makes a difference is in line at resteraunts where the upper tier members can go to a special shorter line. Tey may ask for a current card in order to cut in line. But the comps using an old card are still the same in your account.

The mad rush you describe depends on the casino. For Mohegan Sun I have an old card from their previous program but it continues to work just fine. As long as the account ID on the magnetic strip reads all is well. Any rewards changes are in the casino database, not loaded on the card. However, I did have to get issued a new Foxwoods card when I tried to use and 8-year old one.
