You're probably correct and I just never paid attention.Quote: MidwestAPIsn't that the case every non-leap year since February has 28 days.
Quote: onenickelmiracleJust noticed February and March 2014 are completely identical for date and days, up until the 29th of course.
Days of the month walk forward one day of the week per year until you hit a leap year. That is, if Jan 1st 2014 was a Wednesday, then next year it will be Thrusday. On a leap year you skip one day, though Jan 1st through Feb 28th have to wait til next year to leap.
The calendar isn't as irregular as it seems. At least not until the last reform in the XVII or XVIII Century. That's when we got the current Gregorian Calendar, to supplant the even older Julian Calendar.
Now and then there are attempts at further reform. But the fact is the calendar as it is is as good as any of the proposed replacements. That said, I would embrace the World Calendar only for the extra day off between Dec 31st and January 1st.
1. 7 divides 28
2. 365 is congruent to 1 mod 7
I'm kind of surprised everyone is acting like they already knew this when I just never noticed or possibly forgotten. There was an autistic kid I knew who knew day and date formulas and could recite them from mind. More amazing was the paper calculator trick he did with pure accuracy. He pressed the paper buttons and got the answer correct to the decimal every time.Quote: 1arrowheaddrI first noticed this when I worked in a hotel because people would book March when the meant February and vice versa. They would come to the desk and swear they had a reservation for the night and I would have them down for exactly one month in the future.
The date formulas are a bit more of a PITA, although I think that there are some shortcuts. I never bothered to memorize them because it seems kind of useless. I also have no idea what you mean by paper calculator.
It was a piece of paper with a drawing of a calculator on it.Quote: AxiomOfChoiceI don't think people are acting. It's not a complicated thing... 28 days is exactly 4 weeks. It's not a big deal, but it's not a difficult thing to notice or figure out either.

If I asked you on February fifth what day March fifth was, your reaction would be instantaneous or would you just look at your phone? Also, would you have known this before you knew this?
Edit to add: There is probably a small chance i'll repost next year or some other year because I just Don't see it as particularly useful to remember in the first place.
Nareed, thanks for the informative post.

I absolutely would have known before this.
If you phrased the question "February 4th is a Monday. It's not a leap year. What day is March 4th?" I would have gotten it instantly.
If you just came up to me and asked me on Feb 4th "What day is March 4th" it's less likely that I would have gotten it because I don't always know what day of the month it currently is. Or, if I'm having a really good week, what day of the week it is :)

lol. I agree that it's not useful.
Thank Axiom. Even better a feeling than not knowing the day or date, is not knowing where you are when you wake up in the dark. The immediate reaction is to think you're home, but part of you knows it's not true. You're in a hotel and maybe in a casino. Pure joy.Quote: AxiomOfChoice

I'm with you man. I had never noticed before.
Jan. Mar. May July Sep Nov with 30 days
Feb. Apr. Jun Aug Oct. with 31 days
December is 30 days except Leap Year is 31.
Now THAT'S wierd... or is it?

I used to know the formulas for how to get the day of the week for any date, I think between 1601 and 2399. Somehow I didn't impress the ladies very much with this skill and I then forgot how to do it.
