Quote: RSAC been on non-stop......ugh, how am I supposed to comfortably watch TV? Dang AC thing is so loud. :(
Three days ago, toward evening, there was a terrible squeal coming from my rooftop. I knew right away my ac had blown a bearing in the condensor fan.
The ac repair people [God bless 'em] are all working relentless hours and the only appt. we could get was tues. Lucky enough to get another service. Of course fan motors have skyrocketed along with everything else we don't notice regularly.
Service call, plus new fan, 747.00 with discount. Nice and cool in here now. Life is getting pretty expensive.
111 now, looks like it might get warm later on?

Central air went 3 years ago and I went with
all window units. Much cheaper and just as
efficient. Cheaper to run, cheaper to buy. A
12,500 BTU GE unit to cool the living room,
an 8000 for the dining room kitchen, and a 6000
for the bedroom. Don't cool the rooms I don't
use. When one goes out eventually, a couple
hundred to replace it within the hour. Screw
central air.

Good thinking, but here in Az., I need a window unit the size of my glass doors. I don't even know if the windows will open it's so freaking hot all the time.
This place probably costs around twenty bucks to heat all year. Electric now is about 350? per month? My neighbors costs more than 400, they must be hanging meat in there because I like it pretty cool myself. The air even smells burned to me. I"m trying to pretend it doesn't bother me, like it isn't really going in to the teens.
But it is. The forecast for Death Valley is 121. If somebody twenty years ago would have tried to tell me that I would now be living somewhere where the temps can hit a buck twenty, I would have spit up through my nose in disbelief at the sheer lunacy of someone saying that about me. I don't belong here. I am misplaced.
First world problems.....
Quote: djatcIts a cool 81 degrees at night here.
That's a bunch of malarkey. If the low is 81, that means it hits 81 at about 4:55 am for about a minute just before the sun rises and the temp starts it's climb. I was out back swimming at about 11:30 last night and the big thermometer still registered 96.
BTW, you sound a bit cranky, djatc. lol. On the other hand, I get driven everywhere, so I never have to go get into the hot car while the AC gets cranking. That is 'somebody else's' job. I don't get in, both at home and when we are out until it has already cooled down. Yeah, I know that's a little bit spoiled, but hey there is no reason why both of us should be uncomfortable waiting for the cool down.
Quote: RSDon't worry about djatc.....he's just cranky cuz of the traffic. :)
Yeah but there is ALWAYS traffic. It's the EDC people this week, somebody else next week. Fight people on fight weekends. Every weekend, something is going on and every weekend have the weirdos from California.

Im getting old. Also i was in the thick of traffic the past few days (driving around in primetime traffic) so im a bit biased towards EDCers. I enjoy driving, just not when the caged 9-5ers let out or when the clubs let out as well. Midnight - 2am is the best time to be on the roads, away from las vegas blvd. I cant wait for winter time. If i have to wear a jacket when going out its the perfect weather for me.

Yeah, but ya know what? I am now in the mood for some home made cookies. :)
My Mother has been temporarily staying with us for about 4 weeks, now. It just occurred to me that back when I lived at home, she made great chocolate chip cookies. We called them tall house cookies....not sure why. I gotta drop a couple hints. :/
Everyone else in the household seems to be taking advantage of my mother's presence. My brother has her doing his laundry. My partner was supposed to pick up some things at the store the other day and when he found out my mother was going shopping, he just added his list to hers. Why shouldn't I get some cookies? :)
Quote: kewljWe called them tall house cookies....not sure why.
'The Toll House Inn of Whitman, Massachusetts, was established in 1930 by Terry and Ruth Graves Wakefield. Toll House chocolate chip cookies are named after the inn.'
Toll House is now a generic name for all
choc chip cookies.
This old guy is informing his old crony buddies that he is getting married to a woman he met a short time back.
And of course, his friend asked him, " is she fantastic in bed"? To which the old man replied, nah, she don't much care for sex.
Well why then, is she a great cook", to which the future beau answered, no she ain't much of a cook either.
Then what is it, asked a the friend again, does she have a lot of money? The husband to be said, nope, she's about as poor as I am.
The friend felt compelled to ask, why, why do you want to marry this woman?
The old guy says, " she can still drive". : )
Quote: kewljIt took until after midnight for the temperature to drop below 100. That doesn't bode well for Saturday (forcast 113). Usually when the temp is slow to drop, it doesn't drop all that much and then sunrise the next day it is off and climbing to new heights. :(
When I've been to Vegas in 113 temps, I always
say to myself 'this is insane' when I'm outside,
over and over. Because it is.

113 IS hot!. Most people think Vegas hits 120+, but the highest recorded official temperature is 117, which has occurred about a dozen times including twice in 2014. So 113 isn't that far off the highest. :(
Last weekend was 111/112, but there was just the slightest breeze. That made it seem even hotter as really hot air hit your face....it was almost a burning sensation.
For the most part, I am really outside very minimally during my day now as far as work. I don't like to drive, so I basically have a driver, like a chauffer. So when we go places, whether to casino or Walmart, there is no need for us both to park the car and walk. He drops me off at the door. :) Only time I am really walking a little outside is trips downtown and occasionally on the strip, which I visit pretty infrequently.
At home, I do spend time outside by the pool. Usually early morning and evenings after sunset. But when it is this hot the after sunset evenings aren't very comfortable. The sun is down....that helps, but it is till too hot to enjoy much other than taking a quick swim.
The day I get back to the Detroit area is forecast to be partly sunny and 76°

When I was young, quite a while ago, the heat didn't bother me as much.
I say that, then remember I spent 1979, 80, 81 in Miami.
It was always hot there, and I didn't like it.
And I was a bit younger then ;-)
It's pretty cool in the basement, Wi-Fi works there.

Some of those that could have felt insulted, well, it went over their heads.

It went down to 48 degrees overnight where I am. The leaves have been turning colors for the past couple of weeks. They're calling for highs in the mid 80s for the next five days. I mistakenly quoted you, teddys, so good morning and have a wonderful day!
sent my friends back there a link to the weather we are having this week... you can guess how they took that
Quote: IbeatyouracesIt got to 76° here in Detroit today which broke the record of 75° set in 1938. Very possible to break tomorrows record which is also 75°.

Been there. Coldest I've experienced is -50 C / -58 F. At that temperature, it's just a dry cold, not nearly as bad as you'd think. That was around late December to early January.
Right now it's a balmy -5 C / 28 F.

Tomorrow and Friday are going to resemble last Saturday night here. Back to the low 50's this Saturday. Currently 64° clear at 10:25am.
And what's even worse it is raining.....again! And it looks like a full rainy day, not just a 20 minute shower that we sometimes get. What is going on.....we just had a rainy day a month ago. lol.

I just got back to Buffalo from Vegas. Weather here today is 75 and sunny. If I was in Vegas and it was 20 degrees cooler than Buffalo I think I would just have cried.
Quote: IbeatyouracesMonsoon season?
No, monsoon season is late summer to early October. Mostly September. But even that, we don't have the kind of monsoon season that other nearby places like Phoenix have.
We just have had a rainier year than normal. The rainiest in the 6 years I have been here. I believe we are slightly over the 4 inches that is the average annual rainfall for Las Vegas. I don't know if that 'officially' ends the 14 year drought Vegas has been in (below average rainfall) or whether there is some other criteria for that, like several above average years??

Being a former east coast guy (phila) and casually keeping track of weather there, I have noticed a very unscientific and probably selective memory trend, that whenever we have a cooler than usual spell, whether winter or summer, when temps are 15 or 20 degrees below average, the east coast almost always seems to be above their average.
It almost seems like if it is below average somewhere it needs to be above average somewhere else to compensate. Again, I know this is unscientific, coincidence-type, small sample size, selective memory stuff.

The scientific reason is because of the placement of the jet stream and if there is a big dip in the middle of the country. If it is a big U sometimes LV get the cold air rushing down from Canada and the East Coast get the rush of warm air from the gulf coast.
