Quote: DocWhat? You go to a "math" oriented site and post a Carlin quote that makes it look as if he doesn't know the difference between "average" and "median"?
+1

Carlin is absolutely right. Look at the popularity of reality TV
shows. Every one of them is fake from top to bottom.
Including Pawn Stars, who's every sale is set up far in advance
and filmed over and over till they get it right.
Gamblers are the same. Most believe they could get ahead and
stay ahead with just a little luck and skill. Ask them, I've been
asking them for years. Just don't wise them up, they'll get
really angry with you. Seriously.

If he'd said "median", half the people wouldn't have known what he was talking about.

Half? More than half, I would think. Most people
think by 'average' you mean their brother-in-law,
and we all know how stupid he is. So if half the
people are dumber than him, they can relate to
that.
Some "fun."
No, gambling isn't "fun" for many of those who do it all the time.
And as time passes and casinos proliferate we'll see just how little "fun" the American Gambling Mania really can be.
Or should I say isn't.
Whats better than squeezing a paigow hand, watching the dice fling through the air or the roulette ball twirl around the wheel? Its a rush
The fact you could be richer or poorer at an instance.
I normally just play poker as i have an edge there. But when i do gamble its for fun and i enjoy it, win or lose.

I'm waiting for someone to come right out and say, "I play poker frequently, and I know I am at a disadvantage to the other players."
No criticism of nezbit intended, but every poker player I see posting here believes he has the advantage at the table. It's not uncommon to hear casino players (like me) who play games against the house come right out and admit that their expectation is to lose more than they win, but it doesn't seem to be that way for any of the poker players.

I'll admit it, it's all about game selection for me. There are tables that are (on average) better than I am and there are tables worse than I am. I know I don't play NL aggressively enough because of my smallish buy-ins, and so I only play NL tournaments where, at least in the beginning, bigger stacks can't push me off of flops that I should see.
I'd say that I have the advantage at many, but not all, Limit Tables. It almost comes down to patience more than anything at those Tables, and I have tons of that.
no interest in losing, its neither productive or
entertaining. Those who say losing is entertaining
are just kidding themselves.

Poker players generally exaggerate about how good they are and losing poker players never post about being a loser. The house takes ~$100/hr off of the table, so we know damn well there are losers in live play! I may be a small loser in live play, partly because I hate the "gold mine" that is 1/2 NLHE, and would rather play low-limit LHE, Omaha8, or mixed games instead. And I play once a month at most. If I played at a casino daily, I might be a little better until I got sick of it at least...lol
Before Black Friday, I was a Supernova at PokerStars and I was slightly profitable after VIP bonuses (i.e. rakeback for loyal, addicted players). I probably made about $2/hr overall in my online poker days...yay.
