I finally broke down and replaced my 2003 HP. I
got a 2010 refurbished Dell with Windows 7 Pro
and a 750K HD and 2000K of RAM, which I upgraded
to 4000K. $165, with a new keyboard and mouse.
I researched this a bit and found a lot of people swear
by refurbished Dell's. Their major market is selling
desktops by the 10's of thousands to schools, universities,
the military and businesses. Two year lease and it goes
back to Dell. They go thru it and do whats needed, slap
a 1 year warranty on it and sell it for 1/4 what it cost new.
Mine doesn't have a mark on it and its wicked fast for
playing at online casinos. None of that garbage you get
pre installed on a home computer, just a HD with 7 Pro
and thats it. I'm very happy with it.

I've had pretty good luck with Dell desktops over the years. Their laptops not so much.

My wife won a Dell laptop in an at work contest
in 2006 and has used that thing 8 hour a day for
6 years and hasn't had problem one. Of course
the HD is 80% empty, that usually has something
to do with it.

Having excess hard drive space does not appreciably speed up or increase the reliability of a windows machine.

The things that slow down computers are lack of RAM and slow hard disk sizes. Most appreciably, you notice delays when your computer is swapping physical memory out for virtual (writing memory to the hard disk). Bad software does not help either.
