Quote:Tourists will soon have a new way to see the lights of Las Vegas: By being spit out of the mouth of an 11-story slot machine and zinged down a five-block zip line past some of the city's oldest casinos.
Officials on Tuesday unveiled plans for a permanent zip line on the downtown Las Vegas promenade known as the Fremont Street Experience.
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said the thrill ride dubbed SlotZilla was destined to become an iconic city landmark.
"This is going to be known around the world: Come ride our Slotzilla," she said, standing beside showgirls and a scale model at the unveiling.
The monster zip line will cost $11 million to build and between $20 and $30 to ride. Construction is expected to start in January

For "$20 - $30 a ride" I don't think you're missing much. This is Downtown after all. That amount of money could get you through two weekdays there. How many folks are going to burn it all for a 30 second zipline?

Have you seen the lines at night for the current Fremont Street Zipline? Hundreds at a time in line at night.

How much is it? Are they getting comped?
This has been there for about a year. Since I dont think any of the casinos have ownership in it, I doubt it is comped often. Seems like a younger crowd in line most times.

I'm pretty sure that it's $20 although I haven't personally taken the plunge.

When I first heard of this, during the summer, the current zipline operating company complained to the media that the city was trying to take over their business; after they took all the risk of setting up the existing zipline. Anyone know if the current operator will have an interest in the new project?
Yep. Recall perhaps a thread from long ago with an interesting title: Vegas Hits On Twenty. The downtown urban renewal and the Nocturnal Nightline are examples of the lets bring yuppies to Vegas to party even if they don't know how to gamble yet. Turn the whole darn town into a Carney's Dream and somewhere somehow some money will rub off. Drink, dance, eat, party, Take the Zip Line for Free (safe landing fee is twenty dollars).... have fun and perhaps even visit one of the casinos sometime.Quote: BozSeems like a younger crowd in line most times.
Quote: NickyDim...We went to go, but the zip line max is 250lbs and at 230lbs I didn't want to risk it, especially when they had us sign lots of paper work absolving them of any liability whatsoever. I didn't feel comfortable with the operation and glad it's going to be done the right way, built by engineers and have the backing of the city.
I can see it now... Step off the scale in front of the Heart Attack Grill and see a two way sign with arrows pointing either to the restaurant or the zipline :)

A 250 lb. max probably means the cable can handle a ton due to insurance regulations. If they build a permanent attraction, they should accomodate 500+ lbs on each pulley, so couples, folks in wheelchairs, or larger folks could partake.
