One Blackjack tournament has the following payout schedule:
1st $10,000
2nd $7,000
3rd $5,000
4th $1,500
5th $1,000
6th $500
I saw the top winner gave $800 as tips. Was he being reasonable or too generous? How would U tip?

If it were me i would go more than $200 or less than $50 if you win the $500.
I don't think I am that cheap but $800 does sound like a lot.

I consider myself a pretty good tipper, and I'd have went $500.

I have never been in a table games tournament. With that disclosure out of the way, $800 sounds ridiculous.
How long did it last? If it was under 4 hours, then I think $300 would be great. Over 4 hours, then $500. You might get a nasty look, but I could definitely understand $200/$300. On the other hand, tournaments (where nobody sees money until the end) might be different on tipping expectations.

Anything over 5% is absurd. I think the standard/expected there would be 2%.

If you win the top prize, maybe a couple of hundred bucks....at most, depending on? Were the dealers happy or sullen? I've played in a couple of those promotional tourneys where the dealers don't want to be there and it's obvious. So in that case maybe nothing or very little.

You have an interesting way of calculation. This tournament lasted 2 days, played 4 rounds, overall it involved at least 10 dealers. There were about 300 players. First round involved 10 tables per session, and there were 5 sessions (5 x 6 x 10) in this round. 2nd round 40% of players survived, 3rd round 6 tables and final round 1 table. There are 6 paid winners. Losers do not tip and some winners don't tip either. I think $500 is about right.

Casino tournaments (which I rarely play) to me have a different tipping schedule. First and foremost, I look to see how much of the buy-in was held back for tips. It is common for the casino to hold back roughly 3%, so I automatically deduct that amount from my winnings. Second, look at how any add-ons or rebuys factor into that amount. This is more common for poker, but if the add-on goes directly to the dealers, then that is pre-tip for service and also factors into my decision.
If the tournament was free or free-ish (based on previous play), then 5% is a fair amount. In this case, $500 seems like the right amount. However, if the buy in was, say $100, and 3% was deducted, then I would only tip $200-$300, as they've already collected their tips from that. It may seem cruel, but if tips are truly supposed to be based on service, then it makes a difference.

The winner is on this board and is a game inventor. You could PM him and ask him why he tipped $800. I talked to him after the tournament and didn't ask about tipping. He did say he won a $100,000 tournament back at the Stardust. https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/las-vegas-casinos/green-valley-ranch/11358-trivia-question-for-board-members/#post183796
