Seems like you had to have a prescription for that in the eighties, however, they gave it to you in big ass bottles, even if you had the slightest indication of a cold. I thought for sure it made you sleepy, I can't remember how it really made me feel. I just remember my mom always trying to get me to take it whenever I had the slightest indication of a cold. I Remember they used to give me actifed tablets all the time and that stuff made me drowsy as f***. I started to refusing to take it. My mom took me to the doctor at the slightest indication I might be sick.Quote: rxwineI remember having cough syrup with codeine. But I often felt like the suppressed cough was making my lungs infected, so I didn't really enjoy it.
Is it just me, or when you were a kid and you had a bad cold it didn't really bother you? It's like I barely even noticed. Perhaps because I got colds all the time and I got used to them? Same thing goes when I had bronchitis.
I would have to have the flu before It stop me and I really noticed anything different. At some point I noticed during my twenties - today whenever I get a cold I'm absolutely miserable, even if it's not that bad.

Admittedly, I'm also addicted to Coca-Cola. I go through about a case of minis in two and a half days. However, I seriously need those extra calories.

I think IIRC you're a pretty thin guy. lots of thin people think they don't have to watch what they consume - but that is incorrect
too much sugar is really, really risky even if you are thin
not trying to tell you how to live your life - just sayin'
Yes, I'm well aware too much sugar might be bad for you, but there's always something that's bad for you. I'm fairly certain something else will get me before the sugar does. Until my dietitian or doctor tell me it's super important I stop, I will continue. I truly am very lucky to be alive a few times over, and in as good a shape as I am. And by no means am I under the impression that I'm in good shape.Quote: lilredroosterI think IIRC you're a pretty thin guy. lots of thin people think they don't have to watch what they consume - but that is incorrect

How I wish you could still get that. I keep wondering if they have some kind of that good stuff in Canada. Or wish I could get some in Mexico and ship it back without getting arrested. All month I've been coughing like Walter White. Went to the care center and they gave me some stuff only partly working. Driving people at work nuts. Do all I can to not keep hacking. Last week had a dealing gig where they actually put us up overnight. My roommate told me how a dentist he had worked for gave him a scrip for like a druggist gallon drum of codeine cough syrup. He's set for years.

What's your pb of choice? I used to be a jiff smooth only but recently I have switched to smuckers all natural smooth. It is some really good stuff but you have to make sure you stir it completely or when you get to the bottom there wont be any oil left.

They do add coca leaf extract. Coke

to import the coca leaf legally.

I thought this was interesting so Googled it. It’s not quite right. A separate company (Stepan Company) is allowed to import the leaf and Coco Cola is allowed to use the products as refined by Stepan. Stepan processes it into pharmacologically active and inactive stuff and sells the latter to Coca Cola.

Coke has been using that company, it's

Wasn't New Coke a formula with the
coca extract removed and the public
hated it?

JIF smooth is the only one that I will buy. I am brand loyal on very few things but JIF is one.
Quote: TigerWuI buy Best Choice Natural Peanut Butter. Only ingredients are peanuts and salt. $2.15 for a 1 lb jar. All natural peanut butter tastes ten times better than the stuff with sugar in it.

I maintain that a real marriage saver is a vacuum that stays quieter than the TV.

On a similar note I remember reading how in the early 80s they thought of taking the @ off the typewriter due to lack of use. Think about that, did you use @ at all before email then URL?
Luckily this passed with the oughts.

Most of my friends don't talk on the telephone much at all.
I am probably on the telephone for 15 minutes a month. 10 minutes of that will be talking to my parents, and then 5 minutes of someone calling me.

Same here. Almost everybody texts or emails nowadays. At least among people I know. That's just personal use, though. Business-related stuff is much more phone oriented.
I made "funny" answering machine messages all the time back in the late '90's. I remember one where I was pretending to play with a gun and it "went off" and then the line went silent like I had accidentally shot myself. That would probably get me a visit from the police nowadays, but back in the day everyone thought it was a hoot.
Custom ringtones were big in the 2000's... Now nobody cares about that stuff and has pretty much gone back to a basic ringtone, if anything. A lot of people I know (myself included) just have it permanently on vibrate.

I never got that downloading ringtones thing. Never got so much of the phone culture. I guess it was worse in China and Southeast Asia. I read in the late 90s how in that area phones were such a thing after six months you were out of the loop. They went crazy for the latest features.
My smartphone is a tool. I use it well but for style it is not.
I saw on TV and in books. I was
a HS senior when Star Trek came
out and I marveled at their
communicators. They could do
everything, even contact the
computer on the ship. Now I
have a phone that does all that.
I rented a Ford Ecosport this

there in the parking lot.

For me as well, though I keep wondering when it will plane off. 1880-1930 was amazing. 1930-1980 was fits and starts. For example, a 1970 car did not have much fancier tech than one did in 1945. But a 2000 car was far more different than one in 1979.
It has to level off for a decade or two sooner or later.

I think about that all the time. Rockefeller
was born in 1839 and died in 1938. He
saw it all. Telegraph, phone, phonograph,
electric, light bulb, cars, radio, movies, planes.
If he'd lived one more year he would
have seen TV at the worlds fair.

Reacher is the modern Travis McGee.
Except John McDonald was a much
better writer. Reacher and McGee
even look alike and talk alike. Lee
Child is a big McGee fan, even does

I go to a 'spa' for a monthly massage covered by my health insurance. I have to pay a $10 co-pay. But if I miss my massage without canceling the day before there is a big sign telling me I would owe $25. I get MULTIPLE emails reminding me of the date and time, MULTIPLE text messages the same, and even actual phone calls...... Last time I went MY MASSAGE THERAPIST WAS NOT THERE; she forgot she was working that day..... I told the secretary that every time I get a text/email/call to do the same for my therapist.

I think autonomous vehicles will be the next big change in culture, so we've got a couple of decades of innovation to go. However, if the climate continues to change, food shortages will change our way of life as we are forced to transition from wheat and beef to other sources of nutrition.
As for the "wonder" in the world, a generation is coming that will never see a live orca, rhinoceros, nor elephant. I suppose it will be how today we can only imagine the massive herds of bison that roamed western North America in the first half of the 1800's.

Most people probably just assume it's some top secret skunkworks project, either from our government or someone else's. UFO =/= aliens.

I thought the climate was getting warmer? That would mean more food not less.
The AV thing is the most oversold story perhaps of my life. Autoline was bragging about a GM car with no controls. I wrote in asking how you move it around the parking lot and how does a mechanic properly road test it. They kept dancing around the question.
The declining to collapsing birth rate is what is going to cause the problems for most nations. South Korea will collapse in a couple generations.

Depends on the crop and where it is. If it gets too hot somewhere, they wouldn't be able to grow crops anymore. If other places warm up, they might be able to grow stuff they previously couldn't. We might break even on food, or lose food, or come out ahead (if we're really lucky).
