MGM Grand lion habitat shut down

I just stumbled across this news story about long-planned renovations beginning at MGM Grand, and saw this little tidbit:
I hadn't heard about this and was pretty bummed. I'm a cat person and have 2 cats of my own (not the big variety, of course), and always enjoyed swinging by to see the giant kitties at MGM. Oh well.

News to me. I didn't catch it. I saw the lions back in December 2011. I actually think they belong in a different habitat and not in a casino....

Better story here.
The precis: Habitat is closed permamently. Twenty lions rotated in and out of the exhibit. The source of the lions is "The Cat House", an 8.5 acre ranch outside of Las Vegas where they live with trainer and habitat designer Keith Evans. He cares for 40 lions that have appeared at the hotel at some point in their lives. The lion has been a part of MGM’s brand for decades, and Evans’ lions are reportedly descendants of Leo, the most recent lion mascot used by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. Evans will need to lay off employees as there is no longer a need to transport lions to and from the MGM from the ranch.
