My wife and I have enjoyed the funky Golden Gate with the cheap famous shrimp cocktails on past visits to Las Vegas and were pleased to see the new ownership/management having reinvigorated the place on our visit last week. However, we were disappointed and downright frustrated by the lack of accommodation for someone with limited mobility.

My wife has been suffering with severe plantar fasciitis for more than a year. She recently even got a temporary handicapped parking permit while she continues to try different treatments and therapies. We were very concerned about her ability to enjoy a long-planned return trip to Las Vegas because of her limited mobility. She ended up renting a scooter which made it possible for us to make the most of her difficult condition.

All the other casinos where we played craps accommodated her with a stool at the table with her scooter parked somewhere nearby. At least a couple of them noticed her difficulty and actually offered her a stool. None was offered at Golden Gate and, indeed, it might have been difficult to have one next to the craps table because of the very narrow pathway around it. Nonetheless, no hospitable accommodation was offered.

Far worse, however, was the active refusal to accommodate my wife with the scooter in the coffee shop where they now sell the famous shrimp cocktails. We had been fairly lucky at the craps table and wanted to celebrate our modest winnings with another couple who doesn't gamble. But the coffee shop hostess told my wife she'd have to leave the scooter near the entrance to the mostly-empty coffee shop and walk to a table more than half way to the back. She would not allow us to just park the scooter somewhere nearby or even offer to help "park" and return the scooter to our table for my wife.

I was furious and we left the coffee shop. I found someone in the players club and let him know what had happened and that we wouldn't be back to gamble at Golden Gate because of it. When I tried to find a way to contact the management through the Golden Gate's website, I found they don't even have a comment or contact information other than a mailing address.

What a disappointment. We have loved the nostalgia and funky feel of Golden Gate for many years, but they apparently have decided they only want to accommodate hipster douche bags. We're such low rollers that I'm sure they really couldn't care less, but I'll miss that little connection to old Vegas.

I would suggest you send them a letter. Both The D and Golden Gate are majority owned by Derek Stevens (His brother, Greg, owns what he doesn't) and tremendous customer service and catering to low rollers is a serious component of the business model for both casinos. I strongly believe your issues, particularly with Du-Par's (the name of the coffee shop) will be taken seriously by someone higher than a Player's Club representative.

Honestly, the PC rep should have redirected your issue on the spot, unless you stormed out, or something.

Either way, I think it's an unfair characterization that the entire establishment, "Couldn't care less," I doubt that's at all true. Perhaps those individual employees couldn't care less, and that reflects poorly on the company, but of you get through to the right people, I think you'll be treated well. You should call before sending a letter and get the extension to a customer service manager...maybe try calling The D and asking for one first.

If you do take action, let us know if they make it right with you. I'd be disappointed if they didn't.

Ditto what Mission said, plus...

Go to the right person at ANY business, and they will give you better customer service than what you got in your situation.

But particularly at The D and Golden Gate. Owner Derek Stevens is leading the charge downtown, and other downtown casinos are following suit, that they reject the corporate mentality found on the strip. Get to the right person, and you WILL be treated right.

Its a real small place
It could be that anywhere you park a scooter could be deemed a fire safety hazard blocking a clear aisle to an exit
I stayed there once
Smallest hotel room I ever stayed in in my entire life
When somebody doesn't believe me, I could care less. Some get totally bent out of shape when not believed. Weird. I believe very little on all forums

+1

Also Stevens is a complete asshole to his employees, puts on a good face for the customer though

When you enter the Golden Gate you're entering the Philippines. They're the bottom of the barrel on employees and service.

As cramped a place as GG is, I can understand
where they would be reluctant. I don't go there
anymore, it's changed way too much in the
last 20 years.

Wow. The negative comments surprise me. I stayed there last November, and will be staying there for the WoV Spring Fling...

It was definitely cramped But they ran at great promotion at times
That being said I can't believe anyone really wants to stay at these hotels but then again I can't imagine staying at a motel six either and people do
No longer hiring, don’t ask because I won’t hire you either

For the record, I'm traveling alone. Motel 6 would be fine for me. As is Golden Gate.

Now, if my wife were with me, that would be an entirely different situation...

More power to you- I just feel like those rooms are not cleaned as well from top to bottom and also and this is probably in my head the cheaper the room the more dirty people stay there and let's just say poor hygene. Obviously I know it's a huge price difference but paying for the mandarin oriental to me is worth it- I never ever ever get a dirty room or dirty sheets- I can't same the same when I have been at courtyard marriotts or lower
