The food and the shrimp cocktails are very good, and there's a new all night menu. Does this mean the resurgence of the graveyard special in Downtown Las Vegas? We hope so!
See ya there!

This. Imagine my shock to find full pay Jacks at the bar while being fed "free" beer after being squeezed for every last credit at bars on the Strip.
As somewhat of a beer snob, I'd be remiss to not mention how good the beer is. I'm partial to pales and dark beers, so naturally the pale and porter were my two favorites, but the amber and lager are pretty good, too. Unfortunately, last weekend when I was there the IPA had just run out and the cherry and IP hadn't come in yet.
thanks again!
The Ellis Island still has their Steak Special for $7.99 which is off the menu. Price has went up over the years but the special is still good. I think it's a 10oz sirloin, potato, salad, and a drink. I recommend you try the house made rootbeer which is extra.
Happy eating!!
Quote: MrWildCardMain Street is decent at best. Good on variety, average for flavor, great on wait time, right for the price. You can normally see the usual suspects plus authentic Hawaiian Food (primary customers), Chinese fast food, and Japanese food. The Friday night buffet is the best deal they have as it's a seafood theme.

You can get the rootbeer (which IS very good) or a microbrew for no additional charge.
Quote: JIMMYFOCKERIs the buffet still above average at MSS?
I would say it is above average. It has a few more options than "The Fremont", and a nicer setting. The price is usually less than a dollar higher than "The Fremont".
I had a cup of the Sirloin & Black Bean Chili to start. It was excellent. I followed that up with the blackened Mahi Mahi, which was also great. My brother had their Pilsner and a Bacon Cheddar Burger, both of which he enjoyed.
The service was relatively quick and unobstrusive. It was definitely a sports bar atmosphere. The prices were very good for Las Vegas. I didn't spend any more here than I would at a similar place at home. When we left, there was a line of 15-20 people waiting to be seated.
I will go back to this place next time I'm in town.
Also, I wouldn't mind another affirmation that the buffet is still the class of downtown.

since my post i have tried the main street buffet using the 2 for 1 coupon. not spectacular but worth it for the price. there were a couple dishes i haven't seen at other places too. the only other downtown buffet i've tried was at golden nugget and fremont and i would say main street is better.
i've also tried the ellis island steak special and its a good deal. although i normally don't drink root beer their root beer is also good. can't wait to try the ribs. i went to famous dave's and want to compare them to the ellis island ribs.
.
Yes, with some minor restrictions. At the Boar's Head bar (the bar that has 9/6 Jacks), they have all four regular microbrews on tap and you can get them comped. They are good. The brewpub itself has all of the above plus two or three rotating specialties that are a must try. You can get these comped on the casino floor. There are two waitresses working the floor; one gets her drinks from the Boar's Head bar, and the other from the brewpub bar. The craps table is serviced by the Boar's Head waitress, so if you want a specialty beer, you should tip her accordingly for going out of her way to the brewpub.Quote: sunrise089What are the options for drinking the heralded microbrews? Free while playing video poker at the bar and for purchase from the same bar and at the restaurant? Can you purchase the beer at the buffet? Can you order it as a free drink while at the tables?
They are more than happy to do this, in my experience.
I second the motion on all the above after our recent Apr 2-7 trip (2017), and would like to add a few more pointers for interested folks . . .
While waiting, we discovered that 777 offers a limited late night snack menu from 11p to 2a, and then continues on from 2a to 7a with a limited BREAKFAST menu! Can't go wrong!
Edit: yes, we did use the breakfast option 2a to 7a because our Friday departure charter flight had us assemble by 5:30 in the Pullman Room. I guess our fellow passengers didn't get the memo about 777's breakfast, and had to walk over to the Cal and back! Maybe that was their morning exercise.
If you get up early, and you just want a fix of coffee or chai with a pastry, head down to the front desk and catch the coffee wagon. I think they could up their sales a lot by offering more options of low-carb/low-sugar item offerings, like say, a bran muffin or granola bars, perhaps a basket of fresh fruit.

There were 2 items I'd never tried, and was I salivating! French Onion Soup and Oysters on the Half Shell!
*WARNING* When you order the French Onion Soup, order a big side order of croutons, or if available that night, half a loaf of crusty French bread, lightly grilled & buttered. Why? The soup was delicious, but on the extremely salty side. It had all the right ingredients - the crystallized onions, the Swiss cheese melted into the bread slice, and extra cheese covering the entire top.
I was not disappointed with the oysters. I wanted to run over and hug the chef who shucked my oysters, as each bivalve was neatly cut, with the juices still in the shell! Also, she gave me SEVEN oysters instead of the advertised 6 oysters (there was one hiding underneath the cup of horseradish)! I enjoyed each of the 7 bivalves with a small swig of Ginger Beer (no alcohol, but tastes like there is!). These oysters were plump, sweet-tasting of the sea, and actually just as good as the oysters I had several years ago at Elliott's Oyster House in Seattle! I would not hesitate to go back for more . . . both 777 and Elliott's!
The MSS Garden Court Buffet is still very enjoyable, as long as you're not looking for champagne quality from a coke budget. Manny (The Omelet Man) still entertains taking and making 5-6 omelet orders at the same time for breakfast. Both lunch and dinner buffets are quite satisfying. We ate there a lot because our charter flight plane tickets came with 4 days of B, L, D meal coupons and then some!
There is sufficient variety for the healthy conscious (lots of salads, fresh fruits, etc.), the meat eaters, and the "I'll just fill my plate with a little of everything".
Edit: Don't forget to show your BConnected card when you line up to the cashier - it's worth a dollar discount off the buffet prices (we only have Ruby cards; you get the VIP line and a bigger discount if you're "Emerald"). Yah, a dollar's not much, but good to keep in mind for tipping your service staff or a BJ dealer!
