Does anybody else watch this show? Has anybody been to their shop? What was your experience?

I have to say, I don't like antiques and old valuable stuff (I unfortunately grew up in a house with a hoarder and have come to really dislike such clutter), but surprisingly I've found the show interesting and I'm surprised I actually somewhat like learning about this stuff. It seems to be a man's hobby for the most part, but I really like the show and I'd love to meet the guys some time.
They're all cool and it would be a hoot to meet Chumlee. I bet you that guy gets laid a lot!

I have heard going to the shop in Vegas is a waste of time as the famous cast members are never there and other than that, it's just a normal pawn shop. And it's filled to the gills with tourists.

Lots of us watch it, general attitude is watch it like you watch pro wrestling. Enjoy it if you like but don't assume more than 5% is real.

There is a thread on this from some time if you want more info on it. I forget who on here went to the store often before the show.

I'm assuming you're joking. First of all, I was being serious. He's a loveable guy and the show has brought him fame, so it's probably really easy for him to attract women. Secondly, even if it was an insult, which it was not, it wasn't directed at a forum member so stop trying to cause trouble.
I think Chumlee is like a big teddy bear and I would love to meet him and give him a nice big hug.

Well, I had to ask. I had always consider dumb blonde as a compliment. So I am now trying to re-adjust my moral compass.

Hands of the trigger, Mission. There is a comp in the first part of my last word in the sentence above.

I have been twice. I swore once was enough but we had someone with us who had never seen it. Chumlee and the old man were there both times. The old man wouldn't come out of the back room but we managed to get a glimpse of him.

The lines can be long and when we got to enter there was a very large (fat) bouncer type at the door giving everyone the evil eye. On both visits the workers acted cocky and were not helpful in assisting customers, probably because they have had their fill of gawkers. If you have anything better to do, go ahead and skip this place.

Resist the temptation to park in the adjacent lot even for a minute. You will be towed. Feed the parking meters because the meter maids come out of nowhere on little scooters.

I went there last year and was not impressed. Everything was priced extremely high. There is no bargaining room on coins and bullion. All other collectibles were are pretty much the full retail asking price and you try to negotiate from there. I didn't see a single person from the show there. I was tempted to consider negotiating on one of the watches that they had, but it really wasn't worth it. I could get a better price at a retail store in some cases.

The place has gotten so popular that its hard to get a "good" deal. I'm sure other no-name pawn shops can offer you better value.

You'll never see the family there by law. When they film, the store is closed.

Haha, maybe I can hide in the bathroom and then pop out when they're there and filming.

On the days they film the store never opens. The
whole thing is a sham. If you have a suit of armor
or a document signed by George Washington, a
pawn shop is the last place you'd take it. Pawn
Shops notoriously underpay on everything, it's
where desperate people go. In fact, the Old Man
has a local rep of being an extreme tight wad. He
used to royally rip people off because he knew they
were desperate to get money to gamble with.

In part one of that quote, our own self-proclaimed Hot Blonde says she would like to meet Chumlee.

I do think that in itself is a strong argument that part two is probably right.

I'm not saying HotBlonde actually has a desire or a chance, or vice versa, but I'm sure Chumlee has plenty of opportunities.

Additional evidence: On the store's souvenir wall, there are more t-Shirts of Chumlee than anyone else.

DJTB,

Hit yourself with the garden hose before you come in the house, would ya? All that mucking around'll track up the place.

Or you could consider "cancel". Just to the right of "post". Useful when what I'm sure was meant to be a compliment just kinda goes off somewhere...lol

I went to American Loan and Jewelry twice. You would think the place would be nice and well kept. It is just a pawn shop that is dirty and cluttered. All of the main people Seth, Ashley, and Les of course were not there. All of the other people were though. Their staff is pretty much as you see on TV. Their prices were horrible. You can do better on ebay or craigslist.

The people in charge of the Emmy Awards just announced that reality shows like Pawn Stars that are "not structured" (e.g. like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo) will compete separately for an Emmy Award from "structured" shows (like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives). Of course, both of these categories are usually part of the Who Cares-er, "Creative Arts" Emmys that get relegated to a 2-hour broadcast on FXX.

I'm not sure what this talk about them being closed on filming days is all about. I've been there while they were filing, and so has my sister and best friend all on separate occasions. When I went Rick was behind the counter with a camera crew set up on the other side of the camera. Additionally they had another camera getting up close shots of the item. Do they actually film while letting customers in? I doubt it. There is always a line to get in. I'm pretty sure they hold the line and shoot in between letting customers into the shop. Are they closed on filming days? Definitely not.

The store itself is just a big tourist attraction now. Half the space on the floor is setup to sell t shirts, key chains, mugs, etc...

From our 'trusted' information source, wikipedia...

"As a result of filming at the shop, however, the four main cast members no longer work the counter, due to laws that require the identity of customers pawning items to remain confidential, and the tourists and fans taking photos and video in the showroom that would preclude this. When shooting episodes of the series, the shop is temporarily closed, with only a handful of customers allowed into the showroom."

When they film the sun looks like it is early in the day, before the people who pawn are out of bed. Always a few people in the background when the show is going on. Probably they let a few people in line in as "extras" if they fit the profile.

They usually shoot one day a week during the
season and yes, it's closed the whole day. They
sporadically open and close it, that would be
counter productive. It's a TV show, they know
who they're filming and what the story is for that
episode. A well oiled machine.

He a little smarter when he's not on camera,
but not by much. He's not dumb, closer to
average is more like it. He also lives way
above his pay grade, which I'm sure has
nothing to do with women being after him
all the time. I met him a few times in the
shop before the show came on, he was just
your average clerk. I bought a gold class ring
from him, and he told me they had a buyer
from Germany that came in twice a year and
bought up all their class rings. They're hot in
EU apparently.
