When I was in Vegas in May, I noticed roadside sculptures at the highway interchanges immediately after renting my car. During the week, I also noticed murals painted at other interchanges around town.
Because I was driving, I didn't take pictures. Nor could I find any good ones on the internet, although here's a good one, from a press conference, prior to installation:
For the record, about the only highway art I ever see in the New York City area, is this handball court art visible from the Harlem River Drive southbound:
Compared to the lack of highway art in my area, I think the Vegas sculptures and murals are really cool. So much so that I had meant to ask about it.
Timing is everything. Today's Las Vegas Advisor Question Of The Day talks about the animal sculptures on I-15. More importantly, he provides a link to a LVSun article from last summer about it.
A Google search quickly turned up a LV Review Journal article about it too.
But the QOD, LVSun and LVRJ talks about it, stating that it will help reduce accidents, because drivers will slow down to look.
Really? It reduces accidents?
Frankly, I think it's a distraction that could cause drivers to take their eyes off the road for several seconds, leading to MORE accidents.
What do you think?

On some of the billboards I strain to pickup all the info in a blip of a second. While the artwork is interesting they should find a better place fo it. To many distracted drivers already.

This is a great work but I think the artwork on beside a road is increases accidents because people's didn't concentrate and it cause of accident. In my opinion, the best place for artwork is any park where people can come and see it without any harm.

It was great when the bypass lane and bridge construction slowed the traffic to a crawl, but at highway speeds, someone is going to get hurt rubbernecking. While some folks may slow for a look, drivers that don't will try to change lanes to get around them. Encouraging drivers to change lanes will not lower the accident rate.

Hey DJ, thanks for posting that picture, I ride my bike by that park about once a week.
The little park it is in is officially called "The Crack is Wack Playground
I find most billboards and other roadside distractions to be very annoying.
Assuming you slow down from 65mph (105 kph) to 60 mph (97kmph)
the car travels 265ft. (80m) in three seconds.
There is no way that can be construed as safe.
