The new version of the forum should be up in about a week or less (and when it is, you will know it!). The whole site will have a slightly different look and feel, but the forum will be the biggest change.
There will be some necessary downtime when the upgrade occurs, but hopefully no more than 2 to 3 hours. I plan to perform the upgrade in the middle of the night, when activity is light.
Here is a list of some of the features of the new forum:
So, there are many changes coming, and while I would like to think that I have tested the bejeebers out of everything, don't be surprised if you encounter some problems shortly after the upgrade. If you do, just post about it and I'll look into it.
There will be some necessary downtime when the upgrade occurs, but hopefully no more than 2 to 3 hours. I plan to perform the upgrade in the middle of the night, when activity is light.
Here is a list of some of the features of the new forum:
- Profiles - Everyone will have their own profile where you can specify things like your favorite casino(s), game(s), etc.
- Blogs - Everyone gets their own blog, too. Rant and rave about whatever you wish. You can also leave comments on other members' blogs.
- Subscriptions - You can now subscribe to threads. What this means is that you will receive an email alerting you when someone replies to a thread that you are subscribed to. (You won't receive more than one email about the same thread unless another post has been made after the last time you viewed it.) You can also set your preferences to automatically subscribe to threads that you start/post in, and/or you can subscribe/unsubscribe when you are viewing the thread itself.
- Polls - New threads can have a poll attached to them, so that people can vote. Polls can have up to 10 choices, and can either be single-choice or multiple-choice.
- Member Activity - When you are looking at the profile of another member, you can view all of the threads that they started, and you can also view all of the threads that they have posted in.
- Searching - You can search the forum using various criteria. In the beginning, using the search function might be more helpful than tags, but over time, tags should prove to be a better way to find threads having to do with what you are searching for. What are tags, you ask? Read on...
- Tagging - Threads can be tagged with keywords. Everyone will be allowed to enter up to 3 tags per thread, and is encouraged to apply obvious and appropriate tags to threads whenever they can. Only letters and numbers are allowed; no spaces or other punctuation. For example, a thread about Harrah's should be tagged with 'harrahs' and a thread about Station Casinos should be tagged with 'stationcasinos'.
- Thread Ratings - You can rate threads on a "zero to five stars" basis. You can only rate a thread once, so make sure you get it right the first time.
- Statistics - The main forum page will show the following info: top 5 threads, top 5 contributors, 5 newest members, 5 latest blogs, top 5 tags, and the 10 most recent threads. In addition, there will be more statistics shown at the bottom of most forum pages, that indicate the number of posts, threads, etc. The main forum page will also show who is currently online (within the last 5 minutes) and who has visited the forum within the last 24 hours.
- RSS Feed - There will now be an RSS feed for the forum, which will be updated whenever a new thread is started. This feed will publish the first post of the 10 newest threads.
So, there are many changes coming, and while I would like to think that I have tested the bejeebers out of everything, don't be surprised if you encounter some problems shortly after the upgrade. If you do, just post about it and I'll look into it.

Wow. You've got some features that I've not seen on any of the other forums I visit.
Sounds good. :)

it does seem to be pretty hard to get it all right, looking forward to improvements.
And we'd like to see that you sold some advertising! that way this forum will continue to be around.

I like the look of the new map , but it has an awful lot of construction that is still in the proposal stage.
1) Police headquarters just broke ground in October and is not completed yet.
2) Overpass across I-15 at Charleston is proposed
3) Overpass across railroad at Harmon Ave. is proposed
4) Monorail completion may not take the direct route down Tropicana. A detour up Koval and down Harmon Avenue would bring more casino and future casinos into the path. It would also include UNLV.
5) Several casino properties are proposed. Station's VIVA casino will probably never be built.
Since the site is aimed at the gaming tourist, they may find it confusing since people will look for roads that don't exist. Some of the features are so clearly copies from Vegas Today and Tomorrow , that you may find a copyright questions.

This should have been in the map thread but....
Ditto. It's supposed to be a map, not a proposal.Quote: pacomartin... the new map ... has an awful lot of construction that is still in the proposal stage.
It kinda looks like whoever did it, got their hands on their original map artwork, got rid of the key and the watermark, muted the colors, changed the fonts, and then simply slapped the Wiz' logo on it.Quote: pacomartinSome of the features are so clearly copies from Vegas Today and Tomorrow , that you may find a copyright questions.

With regards to the map, I would be careful that you didn't use the original Vegas Today and Tomorrow file to create this one. Otherwise, it is a knockoff, and as long as you created it independently, it should be fine. I would probably delete some of the ancillary attractions off to the side, though, to focus more on the gaming attractions.

bumping Nareed's suggestion. I can only figure out how to access the 5 most recent blog posts. How do I search for blog posts? Is there an index somewhere of all posts?

I've mentioned that too - in a different thread about the new features.Quote: dwheatleybumping Nareed's suggestion. I can only figure out how to access the 5 most recent blog posts. How do I search for blog posts? Is there an index somewhere of all posts?
If such an index ever appears, I'd hope that it includes the number of replies to each blog post, as well as the user ID and time of the most recent reply.
A lack of a blog index is one reason I have never placed a blog post. The other reason is that some blog posts are better suited as regular forum threads, and vice-versa. I don't think I have anything to say that is better suited as a blog....

Is there a way to show the mostly recently updated threads (not just the list of posts)? It's hard to see what has been updated since you last read...

There is now a rudimentary way to browse member blogs. On the forum home page, in the lower-right corner of the group of recent activity, you will find a link called "Browse blogs..." which will take you to this page.
I say it is rudimentary for now, because you can't sort it... (the entries are sorted by date, with the most recent ones at the top). I will enhance it in the near future.

Although sorting options would be nice, that's not a big priority. Just having that index makes it a lot better than it was.

Wait a sec...
While this listing is great to find older blogs, the date shown is the date of the original blog entry. It should be the latest reply (or list BOTH).
Sorting by last reply should probably be the default or at least an option.
