This Week in Gambling: Shifting sands

In an amazing turn of events, this week's gambling news finds that the Las Vegas Sands Corporation has made a major change to their online gambling philosophy. Now, the company is not wasting any time plotting a new, digital course after the passing of Sheldon Adelson. We also cover sports betting news and the end of an Atlantic City landmark.

It’s been less than a month since the passing of Las Vegas Sands President and CEO Sheldon Adelson. Already, the new CEO seems to be steering the company toward online gambling and digital betting. Entering web based sports betting was long rejected by Mr. Adelson, but Rod Goldstein is in charge now and seems set on this potential new expansion.

According to Bloomberg, Goldstein is currently in discussions that could result in Las Vegas Sands finally entering the online sports betting industry. Goldstein was officially named as Adelson’s replacement on January 26th. When speaking of Adelson’s dislike of online gambling, Goldstein said “He never questioned its viability… We just want to keep working toward our goals. It’s a very interesting business. The question is can we bring something to the table that can make a lot of money.”

Goldstein said he thought Las Vegas has its best days ahead despite the company’s two Strip resorts reporting a negative cash flow of $124 million in 2020. Total revenues for the Venetian and Palazzo dropped nearly 60% to $738 million. Now, online gambling looks to be a part of that future.

Michigan gaming regulators said Tuesday the activity generated a total of $42.7 million – $29.4 million in revenues from igaming, and $13.3 million from online sports betting. The activity took place between Jan. 22-31.

“Michigan generated more launch-month online gambling gaming revenue than any other U.S. market in history,” Eilers and Krejcik Gaming’s Chris Grove said in a research note.

According to figures provided by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, FanDuel had the largest market share of all sports wagers at 28.3%, while DraftKings’ market share was 24.5%.

MGM Springfield generated $14,498,459.13, while Encore generated $33,315,530.63. Plainridge generated $9,792,037.73. A year ago the three casinos’ combined gross gaming revenue was $80,256,037. Atlantic City casino revenue up 9.3% in January (with help)
New Jersey (results) - Wayne Parry, Associated Press - New Jersey’s nine casinos saw 9.3% more revenue in January than they did a year earlier, but that was largely because of money won online or from sports betting…the casinos’ performance with in-person gamblers fell 16.7% from January 2020 totals. The total handle was $958.7 million. Including internet and sports money, the casinos won $295.7 million in January. Sports betting record as Mississippi gambling revenues rise
Mississippi (results) - Rege Behe, CDC Gaming Reports - The Mississippi Gaming Commission said Tuesday that gamblers lost $194.3 million for the month, a 7% increase from the same time period in 2020. The sports betting handle was $67.7 million, revenue from sports betting was $9.11 million in January. Overall, casinos in the Coastal Region brought in $117.3 million, an increase of 3.1%. Gaming revenues stay strong due to igaming and sports betting
Pennsylvania (results) - Rege Behe, CDC Gaming Reports - In a report issued Wednesday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, the combined total revenue from all forms of gaming and fantasy contests reached $311.1 million in January, a 2.7% increase compared to revenues in January 2020…The $80.4 million in January revenues for igaming was a record, an increase of 11% from the previous high set in December 2020…Sports betting handle in the state for the month was $615.2 million, 12.16% more than December. French Minister of the Interior to consider relaxing casino location laws

Currently 38 French departments out of 101, do not have a casino. According to MP Jean-Luc Warsmann, a relaxation will be proposed for tourist municipalities. Portsmouth casino project names general contractor

This Week in Gambling: Super Bowl betting not so super for Las Vegas

With the pandemic still raging, this week's gambling news finds Las Vegas casinos did not enjoy their usual rush of visitors this year. That translated to millions of dollars in lost sports bets, not to mention millions more in lost tourism revenue. Despite this, there are signs that Sin City is preparing for the future, with new coronavirus measures and new luxury resorts opening soon.

Our gambling news finds that with the 'big game' now in the books, the normally busy Super Bowl betting in Las Vegas was pretty quiet... yet another victim of the coronavirus. Usually, Super Bowl betting brings somewhere near 300,000 visitors to Sin City and boosts the Nevada economy upwards of $500 million, with $100 million coming from bets placed on the game. But with COVID still forcing closures, occupancy limits, and other restrictions on business, Vegas is struggling at about 50% of normal capacity.

The state of Nevada remains under severe restrictions at 25% of capacity for many public venues. The losses this weekend could be as much as $100 million which would have translated to jobs, wages, and taxes generated to pay for critically important services. Jeremy Aguero of Applied Analysis said “I don’t want to compare Super Bowl weekend necessarily with New Year’s or the sports betting with March Madness, there’s a lot of great weekends in Las Vegas. This is one of them."

"What you are talking about is 300,000 visitors, traditionally that come here and hundreds of millions of dollars in economic impact. All in a single weekend," explained Aguero.

The Louisiana Gaming Control Board has published its final regulations for the prize contests, and the State Police’s gaming commission opened the application process Friday. The approval process will take 60 to 90 days for each company. Kangwon Land hit with tax hike in return for 20-year license extension

Nevada kicks off 2021 with a 26.6% gaming revenue decline
Nevada (Las Vegas) - Howard Stutz, CDC Gaming Reports - A 26.6% decline in Nevada gaming revenues during January wasn’t a surprise since the month was going up against a $1 billion pre-pandemic January 2020. Las Vegas Strip revenues declined 43.8% in January, which was missing the large New Year’s Day celebrations and the Consumer Electronics Show, which went virtual this year. Also, casinos statewide were operating under 25% capacity limitations due to COVID-19 surges. Washoe County, which includes Reno, saw a 4.9% gaming revenue increase while rural parts of the state experienced double-digit increases. Statewide, gaming revenues were $761.8 million, compared to $1.037 billion a year ago. The Strip reported gaming revenues of $321.5 million, compared to $572.2 million last January. Acies Acquisition II filed its S-1 with the SEC on Monday. According to the initial filing, Murren will act as chairman. Members of his first SPAC Acies Acquisition I will fill out the other key positions. This Week in Gambling: Vegas casino restrictions shrink

We have a full week of gambling news to report, as a "glitch" with the BetMGM sports betting app resulted in anger, confusion, and the police being called. Also, Las Vegas casino restrictions are being rolled back a little at a time, and the Super Bowl streaker tries to collect on his stunt.

In addition to the fall in tourism and loss of revenue, the BetMGM sports betting app encountered some issues over the weekend which resulted in the Las Vegas police having to show up to keep the peace.

Metro Police were called to a multiple MGM Resorts properties around Las Vegas as angry bettors say MGM refused to pay their winning bets. It seemed that the companies app crashed right in the middle of the Super Bowl, but it later turned out to be a glitch that was caused by human error.

Reports stated that gamblers became angry at several of MGM sports books, and that resulted in the police entering the properties and threatening guests with being arrested and permanently banned form all MGM casinos.

The CEO of BetMGM, Adam Greenblatt, later confirmed that the outage was a mistake cause by an error, which is why the downtime was restricted to the state of Nevada and not nationwide. “It was specific, and was the unfortunate result of a human error…” he said, “…it has been addressed.”

BetMGM and iGaming have become important parts of MGM’s business, and they company is working to position itself as a leader. Investments and partnerships have been in the news over the past year as the scramble to sign up American gamblers has intensified.

Downs Casino reopens after closing for pandemic
New Mexico (reopening) - KRQE - The Downs Racetrack & Casino in Albuquerque reopened for business this weekend. The casino says the safety measures exceeded those set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is making sure people stay safe with temperature checks at the door. Guests will have to wear masks and the casino has lowered its capacity to allow people to social distance. The Downs’ general manager says he’s happy to finally bring back his employees.

Virgin Hotel will open with no resort fees
Nevada (Las Vegas) - Bailey Schulz, Las Vegas Review-Journal - Las Vegas’ newest resort-casino is set to open next month without one of the most contested charges among travelers: resort fees. The off-Strip Virgin Hotels Las Vegas is set to open March 25 with no resort fees, complimentary self-parking and free Wi-Fi. Parking will be available at two parking garages located off Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road. Choctaw $2.5 Billion Impact to Oklahoma in 2019
Oklahoma (Indian gaming) - Native Business - The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma announced on February 25, 2021 that the Tribe had a $2,519,532,303 economic impact on the State of Oklahoma in 2019. The economic impact report, prepared by Dr. Kyle Dean, Economist for the Center for Native American and Urban Studies at Oklahoma City University, showed the Choctaw Nation is one of the largest contributors to southeastern Oklahoma, as well as the overall state. Aristocrat to roll out new responsible gameplay technology
Oceania (Australia) - Inside Asian Gaming - The CEO of Australian slot machine giant Aristocrat Leisure Ltd, Trevor Croker, has revealed the company will roll out new responsible gameplay technology into the domestic market before the end of March after receiving approval from some state regulators. Torstar to launch online casino to help fund its journalism
Canada (Ontario) - CBC News - Torstar Corp., owner of the Toronto Star and other papers, announced it plans to launch an online casino betting brand in Ontario this year. Danish gambling venues to remain closed until 5 April
