So per proposal in this thread : https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/info/announcements/28819-wov-newsletter/#post589503 , we are more than happy to organize monthly contest(s) and give away some symbolic cash prizes ( it won't make u rich but can pay for drinks , and should be fun etc. we can PayPal the prize(s) ).
Now please post your contest proposals here, it has to be something that would involve some sort of effort from participants: e.g. a blog about your recent casino exp , predicting the price of bitcoin and explain why etc.
If we get enough interest we can make this on regular monthly basis. So let me know how you like the idea and post your proposals.
Fire away!
Cheers
Zuga
Price of Gold on X date.
Quote: RomesDouble Whammy... You could introduce new casino games (slots or tables) and ask people to do a write up similar to how Mike does them, with expected returns, etc. I think it would be a top level report, because actually calculating the basic strategies for things like new table games would be quite difficult for the average user (and we wouldn't want to put Mike out of a job =P). BUT, just kind of copying Mike's format and running the numbers still takes effort and work to find the return of the game.
interesting proposal. How would u figure out the winners? if say top 3 win?
And then fire Mike so Romes can take over.Quote: RomesDouble Whammy... First person to have the review done and checked by someone (Mike, yourself, someone else, etc, etc) and the math is correct.Quote: Zugainteresting proposal. How would u figure out the winners? if say top 3 win?
I don't claim to be able to do Mikes job in any manor of fashion =P. I use his calculations to hack my own versions of things and my own calculations. In the proverbial sense, he's the giants' shoulders I'm standing on to do my calculations =).Quote: AxelWolfAnd then fire Mike so Romes can take over.

That's nothing, according to this ( https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/gambling/trip-reports/28611-chip-collecting-tr-spring-fling/8/#post588295 ) Romes is DA Whizzer.

Sure let's take a forum with 8280 active members and run a contest that applies to about 9 of them

FORUMS as in plural??? I'll need a list, please.
Quote: Zuga... post your proposals...
Thank you for considering this Zuga. I think everyone enjoys getting a chance to win something.
Here are a couple of ideas:
- There are usually a couple of major sports events every month. You can post an event and readers submit their predictions. e.g. What will the final score of Cleveland vs. Golden State game 1?
- There are also lesser known events that may require readers to do some research to handicap: Las Vegas 51's baseball, WNBA, Bundesliga, X-Games...
- Have a "Top Ten" or "Top 7" contest where readers send in responses to a poll topic with a short write up. Polls can be serious, "Best Poker Room Chairs", "Favorite Hotel Pool"; or humorous, "Rejected Names for the Raiders New Stadium" ... Winning entries judged by your staff, or chosen at random from all valid submissions.

What # will come up on Zuga's $ 100 single # bet on Roulette ?
1. Have a contest where you ask for contest ideas. Best idea wins a small cash prize.
2. Best original poem on gambling, Vegas or related topic.
3. Best sad story/anecdote about gambling.
4. Funniest joke about gambling (or any other topic)
4. Worst (or best) idea for a new themed Hotel/Casino for the strip.
5. Photo contests: most beautiful (artful) original photo of a casino
6. Most creative way to Change (add to and/or subtract from) a standard deck of cards - with an example of application to some game
7. Funniest variant of Texas Hold'em - define a set of rules or game concept for a game of hold'em that is not named after Texas, but instead is named after some other location (or even person, or whatever)
8. Weirdest gadget or device/object currently for sale on the internet.

I vote for selfies with cocktail waitresses... Ha!
"Tips for first-time visitors"
"Off the beaten path things to do in Vegas"
- Every suggestion would be one entry into the prize pool.
Wouldn't have to be limited to sporting events, either. If there's a question (like a trivia question) asked, first to post the correct answer in the "WOV betting app" wins fake $$$. Could also be used for the type of bets like if TomG can eat 15,000 McNuggets or 100 pancakes in 30 seconds. And if people want to bet real money with each other, then they can still do that.
Of course, it'd be fake money, but just used to determine who wins prizes. Could even have a leader board, showing member's current $$$, how much they've won for the given period (week/month) as well as lifetime or for the year. Hell, could even add that next to people's posts (where it says "member since X/Y/Z, Threads, Posts, etc.).
1. This would require at least some work from Zuga or a developer. I'm not sure how much effort it'd take. From my experience, I don't think this would take too much time....but if they want it to get real fancy, it might take a bit of time.
2. This would remove the necessity of people having to post their answers/picks/etc. publicly (and thus, stolen), as well as the necessity of having to PM your answer/pick/etc. to an admin. I don't think anyone wants to spend that much time going through posts or PMs, figuring out who's the winner, etc. etc.
3. It also automates the process. A new "pick" or line is entered into the app, with proper lines, as well as the end date for when you can enter your pick. Once the sporting event is finished or the answer to the question is determined, Zuga, Mike, or whichever developer has access to it, enters the winner. Anyone who picked the winner gets paid back their money plus winnin's.
4. Allows for many more bets to be taken (instead of asking in one thread, who's going to win the Superb Owl, then another for the World Series, etc....just ask all questions in the app). Also I'd imagine you could pull lines/spreads from VegasInsider or some online betting book (like pinnacle or 5dimes) and use those lines (with juice removed).
Literally anyone can COPY PASTE the tables that the wizard does with minimal reading/effort. It would highly encourage the other 8,271 (according to your numbers) to learn how to do some of these things for themselves to:Quote: michael99000Sure let's take a forum with 8280 active members and run a contest that applies to about 9 of them
A) Appreciate the effort/work Mike puts in to doing them.
B) Make them more self-sufficient in answering their own probability questions.
C) Enable them to help others on the forums that have similar questions.
Any other brain buster reasons why that was a bad idea again?
OR, what would make the forum better ? Trip Reports ? So anyone submitting a trip report that month would be entered. Arbitrary bonus entries to be divvied out by the secret Star Chamber council for helpful trip reports, tips, etc.
See, look how much fun that could be !

A large number of forum members do not live in Vegas or near Vegas and so could not participate. Dammit, the miracle of the internet is that it brings together people who live in different places but share a common interest. So, don't make an internet contest that is location-specific.
select the best one and post it. Give a prixe to the winnind submission and prizes for members who get the most correct answers. Tied decided by earliest entry. Any subject. Sports Vegas old Vegas wierd table games, etc

A group of APs will never think of that.
We could host talks from gaming experts, trivia games, contests, topic conversations with a pass-the-mic so people could talk instead of type, live drafts for sports leagues, all kinds of stuff. If the intent is to build participation, more ways to participate would top my list.
Quote: beachbumbabsI'd really like to see the board put on a chat feature with assignable single-channel microphone and real-time scrolling chat. If we had that, the possibilities could be greatly expanded.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but you can see the image is off by 90 degrees. I know full well how to use image editing software. However, when I rotate an image, the rotation doesn't survive an FTP transfer. Does anyone know how to truly rotate an image?
.
Really

Wouldn't it be easier to get HTML to render the image as rotated than to actually rotate the source file?
Quote: prozema
Yes really At the very least it will take a very lot of research That why I suggest ties be broken by earliest entry ot a time limit be posted. Starting the contest at a specific time would drive traffic,
You seem old enough when everybody knew the names of boxing champions ? what boxer lost to 3 world champions but beat Rocky ?
What does a Flamingo have to do with the first casino built by the mob in Las Vegas ?

I know how to do that but this forum doesn't use HTML but its own formatting language that doesn't have a feature for rotating pictures.
I thought it was all quarters, or did you add some small change in?Quote: WizardI know how to do that but this forum doesn't use HTML but its own formatting language that doesn't have a feature for rotating pictures.
What if someone is within $10?
Then they win both showcases.Quote: AxelWolf...What if someone is within $10?
I will settle for the change in the jug. I have an estimated guess already, but I have a few questions.Quote: RomesThen they win both showcases.
Mainly, was this change saving a natural occurrence from just buying stuff? I'm wondering if any rolls were ever bought for another reason and added to the mix? Perhaps a bucket of change was added from the old machines?
Quote: AxelWolfMainly, was this change saving a natural occurrence from just buying stuff? I'm wondering if any rolls were ever bought for another reason and added to the mix? Perhaps a bucket of change was added from the old machines?
Yes, just random coins from change given from buying stuff. Often I leave pennies at the point of sale, so it may be a little light on the percentage of them.
Recently rolled my quarters and dimes. Came out to $140. Didn't bother with the nickels or pennies.
That's spare change for a year. Mikes jar has several times that.
Quote: AyecarumbaI think the reason the kids don't take coins out is that the jug weighs 15 kgs. They can't lift it...
Surely, you jest.
My old man had one, which I have now. It's the same thing, but back in my day they were made of glass. I took silver out of it daily for cookies at school despite it weighing 4 stone.
Still have that jug, it's about half full. 3/4's full used to mean a new gun. Probably have to fill it nowadays =/
Usees old chewing gum to get out the change.Quote: FaceSurely, you jest.

Quote: WizardDoes anyone know how to truly rotate an image?
It's not truly rotating an image, but creating a new image: Just take a screenshot of the not-really rotated image, crop out the rest of screen, and ta-da.
Speaking of jugs of coins.....when my dad was in his early 20's or so, he had a jug like that, 3/4 full of change. One day someone broke into his place and stole it, along with a 12 gauge shotgun. He filed the police reports and all that, but nothing ever came of it. But then, a few years ago he got a knock on his front door by the police, asking if he was the owner of the gun (they gave a description), as it had been used in some robberies. He said yeah, sorta, but it was stolen from him many years ago. He got the gun back, but didn't get the jug full of change or any of the other stuff that had been stolen. He ended up restoring the shotgun since the bast*** who stole it didn't keep it in good shape.
EDIT: Unless there are some more recent developments, I know what I'm going to guess for this.
Pro-Tip, I think: Casinos will count your change for you. They'll throw 'em in the change-counter-machine-do-hicky. No need to go to the bank and/or hand-roll the change.
