I booked my vegas trip at the GVR for this August, and I just received an e-mail from them telling me that I can reserve a "stand-by" for upgraded rooms (i.e. room with balcony, suite, etc.) for a certain price at check-in if it's available. The prices they are quoting look a little cheaper than what the advertised going rate of the upgraded room was online, but is it worth it to reserve the "stand-by" price, or should I just take my chances on the day of check-in and see if they offer me an upgrade for an even cheaper rate? I've never stayed at a station's property, so this "stand-by" process is new to me...thanks in advance for the opinions!

I think its new to Stations too.

At least South Point will offer you a low priced room and give you a guarantee of an upgrade if one is available. They are having their "private sale by email" now (or else it just ended) but they don't charge you for any sort of "stand by" upgrade.

Between upgrades, resort fees and now fees for maybe getting an upgrade... rooms in Vegas are getting more and more like buying a used car: Trust nobody!

Oh, I didn't realize that I would be charged the extra amount even if I didn't receive them....the e-mail made it sound like I would only be charged if they actually had that upgraded room available....that sucks if I'm charged for a "maybe" room...

Sounds to me like a variation of the $20 trick. In this case, the $20 goes to the hotel rather than the front desk clerk.

You are charged only if an upgrade is available. It's not a bad way to go. This is what bit me at sunset station last spring - upgraded my comped room and paid a resort fee since my room charges were no longer 0.

Do you know if I'll get sent another e-mail in the next couple weeks which might have even a cheaper fee for upgrades? Right now, they are saying it would be $90 more per night for the grand suite, which is basically 50% off compared to the difference of booking it straight up...but if I could get the upgrade for even cheaper, that would be pretty sweet!

In may they had a promo for a free upgrade at check in (space permitting). I don't know if that is still running, or how likely success is in that promo. I just got the one email when I used the stand-by program.
