I grew up watching James Garner as Maverick ( 1957-1962 on TV. His game of choice was draw poker. In 1964 in the movie Goldfinger the game Goldfinger was foiled at cheating by James Bond was not poker or baccarat. It was GIN. In 1965 Lancey Howard ( Edward G Robinson ) destroyed Steve McQueen at 5 card stud. Hold'em was first displayed in a major movie in Rounders.
In 2006 a hold'em poker tournament was a prime factor in Casino Royale. Nwo we are on the verge of legalization of on-line poker.
And another evolution. Many believe hold'em is perfect but 2 flaws have appeared lately. Gone are the days of players thinking they can win on any two cards. As their knowledge has increased so has action. In both live and on-line play I readily accept I will have both winning and losing sessions.
What I hate are those nights when I can not catch a hand and when I get a good starting hand I get no action whether I raise or slow play. But I think the bigger challenge to hold'em comes with online play. Just two many cheaters and the poker rooms failure to protect the players. Some have welcomed back cheaters and even sponsored them Talk about an insult to their other players. I am talking about subtle cheaters, not the easily caught multiple identities, raise my buddy's good hands, etc.
Think I will make this a poll while I am at it. About on-line cheating. And hope for comments on next evolution of poker

Considering the online poker boom, and that so many books and TV shows have come out, that skill levels are really at a high right now, so I think the hold 'em boom of 2003 is over. All the novices from 2003 have either become the sharks, or have gone broke and lost interest by now and no longer play. Many of those who quit jobs to go pro have become bored with hold 'em and have graduated to Omaha, which may be too tough for hold 'em tourists, or too crazy variance-wise. But there are rooms here in LV that have regular Omaha games like the B, the V, Orleans and Red Rock. Maybe the next great poker evolution will be somewhere in the middle like Pineapple. Players didn't seem to like the electronic tables that Excal had a few years ago, so we can rule that out. I kinda think vanilla hold 'em will give way to something else eventually. A new generation will become interested in stud games again, or the draw games, now that we can practice lowball online before dipping our toe in b & m games.
Way back when someone devised the hand rankings, the popular game was 5-card draw or 5-card stud. So it made sense that trips beats 2 pair, flush beats straight when only making a 5-card hand out of 5 cards. Now with hold 'em, we make 5 card hands using 7 cards, so the math of the rankings is no longer true. And anyone who plays Omaha knows how volatile the hands can be making a 5-card hand out of 9 cards. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, with more cards to play with, the odds of making any type of hand changes, but overall, the hand rankings, stay the same.

I don't play online for cash. I may once it gets legalized.
It's not so much that I'm worried about the law catching up to me, but that I'm concerned with all of the potential flaws of unregulated business.

Too many hold'em players don't realize that they are playing 7 card stud, just in a different format. And the whiners about the RNG being rigged seem justified in their belief by the fact they see more flushes at showdown than straights ???
DUHHH More people draw for flushes

First confession is that I am playing online in another window as I write this. I read the poll wrong and didn't realize you could for more than one thing. But anyways.....random thoughts.........
In 4 years and 200,000 or more hands I can only confirm being cheated once. I got an email of apology and note of a credit in my account. If you go with a reputable site collusion will be hard unless you have many multiple accounts. And I have to wonder who would collude in a $5 tournament? As I say, anyone who would do that would counterfit $1s.
I don't buy RNGs not being random. A smart room is an honest room. Read about when Frank Rosenthal took on the poker cheats at the Stardust. He claims business went up 400%. The guy ccomplaining about the biased RNG is the guy who says I took the BJ Dealer's bust card.
Once a guy thought I was colluding and said he was calling support. I told him to learn how to play cards.
What will kill a poker room fast is too many all-in-maniacs. Nobody wants to have to put their entire roll up to see a flop.
Bought a rack of whites once as I like tall stacks in front of me. Loudmouth at the table asked if it was the first time I played. He should have stayed quiet as I took $150 from him and turned most of those whites red. He dropped $1500 in an hour, I think everyone at the table got a piece of his stack. Loudmouth jagoff.
My buddy lost to a trucker who always went in with 10-4. (Get it?) At a later session I went in with 10-4 and won. The look on his face was better than the small pot.

I voted for play online but being cheated is in the back of my mind. It just seems that the 1 and 2 outers come WAY too often, and the donks get rewarded quit often also.In another thread someone mentioned about aces and kings coming on the river way too much. That has been my observation too. Now i am just a micro player but feeling like you have been deceived is still the same even tho its 2 or 3 dollars instead of 50. I too have become bored with holdem, so I play PL Omaha high almost exclusively( btw I have done quit well online in my 2 yrs playing). It just seems i can release a hand in omaha better than i can in holdem(I dont chase usually lol).

I would def like to meet the Wizard and a few of the great posters on this site).I would rather play tournys because as a micro player thats usually means i play with scared money (lol). But i do well in tournys tho.

With increasing bandwidth, and the relatively cheap access to smart phones, I think the next evolution of poker will be online play with "live" camera's enabled. There are huge differences between sitting alone in your den clicking a mouse wearing your pajamas (and how he got into your pajamas I'll never know...bah dum dum,) and playing in a poker room with every other player looking for tells, watching how you push your chips into the ring.

Here's an excellent resource for all the poker tournies in Las Vegas taken from a great (competing) poker website. Along the top of that page can be found trip reports, poker forums, room reviews, all that stuff, just like this site, but by different people. Down the left side is a room-by-room analysis. That site has a real focus on poker and many many hours can be wasted spent there.
Anyway, I notice garden-variety hold 'em tournies everywhere, with the occasional Omaha and even stud. I could've sworn Orleans had a weekly HORSE tourney too on Saturdays, but it's not on the list right now.

According to this unscientific poll most people would not play on-line poker due to facing collusion and the fear of not getting paid. Which is what I expected. But 10 out of 18 believed it won't be legal in next ten years, That I did not expect. NO WAY !!!
