Why would they need them? Maybe in case they lost one.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

They all have a machine ID and I figured they’d add an RFID so they could capture the ID wirelessly whenever they needed a reading.

I don't know any casino that uses them. Usually the machine ID is 5 digits and is just manually read when needed. Most times when it is needed the player tracking system will print it out on the necessary forms (ie. Jackpot slips).

I would expect a barcode may work better.
RFID is different from NFC, but I'd want to avoid both to minimize any appearance of impropriety.
Otherwise, a slot tech walks by, a player gets a near miss, and the superstitious rumors grow.

I do remember some casinos using barcodes many years ago. I haven't seen them lately but they may still be there.

Been a while since I watched a slot drop, but I expect there are likely still barcodes on the inside of the cabinet, where it counts, and where they won't get scratched up much.

Why would they be needed? The machines are already wired to a central server for slot club type stuff. What ever else they might need could go thru that network connection.
