From the Wiz's VP link:
https://wizardofodds.com/videopoker/images/cheat-sheet.pdf

I was surprised to see that 9/5 and 8/6 both are 98.4%.

hm.. 8/6 and 9/5 ddb are also both 97.9%

edit:
8/6, not 8/5
oops

Actually, 8/5 is 96.8%, as my chart says.

Per your other point, the probability of a flush and full house are fairly similar.

Right, and they are both only 98.4% if one rounds to the nearest tenth. I typically think:

9/5 JoB: 98.45%
8/6 JoB: 98.39%

9/5 DDB: 97.87%
8/5 DDB: 96.79%

So what if you don't actually pull a flush off 9/5 or full house off 8/6 during a playing session? Are you then technically playing full pay since your session was not impacted by the reduced payout?

Theoretical question since it doesn't hold water in the long run, but I had a pretty crappy run on a 9/5 JoB recently and the one sad irony of that round was that the reduced payout on the flush didn't matter since I couldn't hit one no matter how many 4-to-a-flush draws I pulled...

Yes. And no.

Yes because if you never hit a flush (or whatever the reduced payout is) and it doesn't affect you.

No because a flush is still part of the % of the return, so it does affect you (not the reduced flush payout....but the fact you never even hit a flush!).

What if I give you a blackjack game where instead of paying you 3:2 for blackjack, you lose 3:2. But you never hit a blackjack in your session. Are you technically playing normal blackjack since the ridiculous rule didn't impact you?

Point taken, although the dealer is always the one pulling blackjack or an average hand of 20, so wouldn't affect me anyway. ;)
