I have been playing deuces wild at a little place near me and doing quite well. I have never seen the pay table structure before and am wondering if someone can help me out with the expected payout math. Here is the paytable it is a bit odd....

Payouts are odds FOR 1 coin

5 of a kind 400-1
Royal flush, wild or natural 100-1
Straight Flush 50-1
4 of a kind 15-1
Full House 7-1
Flush 5-1
Straight 3-1
3 of a kind 1-1
Two Pair 1-1

No special payouts for 4 deuces, assume 4 deuces pays the 5 of a kind payout.

"To 1" or "For 1"

It's gotta be "For 1"

Yeah, given a fair deck, the return would be ridiculous. The payout is more appropriate for a Joker's Wild machine.

So then we can't determine the payout because the probabilities don't follow a poker deck. It's probably ~92%, especially if you live in Oregon or New York.

The simpliest way to test to see if it's a Class II machine is to throw away a winning hand on the flop and see if you end up with a similar or equivalent ending hand.

Because a Class II is akin to a pull tab, so if you are destined to win that hand, you will win that hand even if you threw away a flopped full house.

I think you are likely to get some heat for having played without first studying the payout table and resolving all your questions prior to risking your money, however, congratulations on your "doing quite well". That is the acid test.

But what if you are "due" for a flush, but you keep off-suit cards after the flop ? How does the machine ensure you will eventually get paid for a flush ?

You mean after the deal? It depends on the unit. Some are boring and give you a "Match Bonus" that is just a bonus payout to adjust your result to the result you were supposed to get. Other units will have a magical "genie" that will physically change your cards to the expected result. I often held garbage on these machines just so I could get the "genie" to appear. :D

I am wishing I took a snapshot of that...I can't find one on the web.

As a general policy I don't play Class II machines, but I will sample them for research purposes. The only experience I had was in San Pablo Casino in the Bay Area near Oakland / San Fran. These Class II VP slots were made by IGT. In my experience (this is from memory), a "genie" comes out and changes some of the cards from the draw AFTER I had threw away a winning combination on the flop.

You may not win a flush per se in your example, but my point is you will nontheless have a winning hand. I did observe several similar situations when watching several other patrons throwing away winning combinations on the flop -- they still ended up with a winning combination.

The games that I have worked on that are in New York will always give you a "match" card and award what the expected poker hand win was going to be.

IGT uses a fairy or genie that changes the result.

If you are dealt a 4 of a kind and don't hold it you will either get a 4 of a kind back or the "match card" or "genie" will give you an equivalent result to the 4 of a kind.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.
