At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Assuming he wasn't just trying to get attention, or wanted to go to jail, with no intention of being on the wing when it took off, I would estimate a 99.99% chance he is mentally ill with a small chance he is just too stupid to know he has a chance of surviving in the wheel well .
Though those chances seem pretty slim these days. Assuming the plane goes 10s of thousands of feet up, the way it seems to usually go is you pass out from lack of oxygen and then it is a matter of whether you will freeze to death or not. If you survive it all but are still passed out, you risk falling out of the wheel well when the wheels are lowered.
Glancing at the link, I'll roughly estimate you have a one in 20 chance of surviving these days, though your condition with the frostbite might be dicey. Note that they don't know how many might have fallen into the ocean, so chances might be much worse.
