Time to organize our annual Spring Fling. I think Doc tends to take the reins on the details. I've listed 6 consecutive Saturdays. Mike is aware of this thread and I expect him to chime in if there is a particular weekend that works best for him. Or if any forum member knows of a reason to avoid a particular weekend. Now retired, I think I can be there for any of the 6. Let's get it started.

Gotta look at my schedule still, last year it was on mother's day weekend. My vote is to avoid that weekend this year. I usually do lunch with mil and dinner with mother. Skipped it last year but I dont want to make a habit of it as who knows how many I left with them.

Im not coming, but the NFL draft is in Vegas, 4/23-4/25.

Unless you actually want to be there for the draft, it’s being hyped up so much that you should avoid Vegas the same way you avoid Vegas for CES.

Thank you for the info. Sounds like a good weekend to avoid.

As for whether or not I will be there, don't count on me attending this year - even my normal June appearance won't be happening (I'll be in DC instead). I should be returning in 2021, with both Oyo and Virgin being open.

Just looked at my calendar. Depending on flights and rooms here is my availability. However I am curious as to if this will happen this year with the exodus that has happened. A lot of those people are usually in attendance.

I am out for:
April 25
May 2
May 9

I am possible for
April 18
May 16
May 23

May 23 is memorial day weekend so not sure how rooms and flights will be for that time.

Since you are first with an actual yes/no post, I can do any of them, but would pick May 2. Late April/early May weather still sucks here, or at least is iffy, and Vegas tends to be perfect around then. Out of your 3 I would pick April 18, May 16, and May 23 in that order.

... I think Doc tends to take the reins on the details. ....

To be honest, I don't really try to take that role, but I have had some minor involvements and likely have expressed my preferences quite often.

In 2015, my wife and I booked a 14-night cruise for the latter part of April, extending into early May, and I might have encouraged the selection of the mid-May period during which the group held our Spring Fling.

In 2016, my wife and I were staying at Main Street Station for Spring Fling, and I was in a slightly better position than most for making group reservations (through a pit supervisor) for our gathering at the 777 Pub in that facility. I think that's about as close as I have come to "taking the reins on the details" for the official gathering.

In 2017, I missed Spring Fling due to a death in the family.

In 2018, I got involved early in trying to select a date, since we were again booked for cruise, that time an 18-night voyage from April into May, and I hoped to get the Spring Fling set for a different period so that I didn't miss two years in a row. We did fly to Vegas for the Fling a week after flying back from Europe. Unfortunately, between the two trips I suffered my first-ever attack of kidney stones. At the Fling I was in miserable shape and was likely an annoying grump toward everyone else. I had to cancel the last few days of our visit and fly home early.

In early/mid-April 2019, I was scheduled for hip-replacement surgery (yes, I'm getting old and falling apart), and I wanted a little recovery time before the Spring Fling, so I was happy that we could schedule our gathering four weeks post-op. I was still a bit slow, but I enjoyed getting together with folks.

I have been starting to look about possible trips this spring, particularly about possible driving trips but once again considering cruises. At the moment, our 2020 calendar is still almost completely open for the April/May period, but I would indeed like to hear a decision on the Spring Fling date(s) so that I can plan around them.

BTW, I think everyone already knows that I am a cheapskate, so the less expensive periods are generally my preferred times, unless there is some other factor of greater significance.

We've done memorial day weekend in the past, I think. Iirc, it was relatively cheap and that was surprising.

I can make anything work, but mqw4flotus works in schools & may only be able to attend if we do the holiday weekend since she can't get much time off work so late in the year.

I think we avoid the draft, avoid mothers day, maybe avoid edc, and go from there. Also, Wiz-day is in May. Not sure if that's a reason to want us around or not, but that might be another consideration.

very good point about EDC. It is May 15-17 this year. My parents were there last year and said it was very busy and rooms were expensive.

Gee I hope I can make this year work. Things keep coming up. Just received our spring baseball schedule and opening day is April 18th. Not a huge deal if I miss as I am going to miss at least 1 game to come but as a head coach on one team and assistant on another I would hate to miss opening day.

you never heard of EDC? I was there about 6 years ago on EDC weekend. It is 50k (I dont know the exact number) ravers partying for 3 days. Girls walk around with less clothing than most swim suits. So there is a positive part of EDC.

EDC has been "estimated date of confinement" to me for 35 years. It's 'medical' for a woman's due date.

Metro Police say they made a couple dozen drug-related arrests the final night of the Electric Daisy Carnival, which drew more than 135,000 people Sunday to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Total attendance for the three-day electronic dance music festival was estimated at 411,400, in line with the past three years.
Police made 28 felony arrests — all narcotics-related — at the festival late Sunday night and early Monday. Police made 38 arrests last year and a record 40 arrests in 2016 at the final EDC session. Police reported 90 felony narcotics arrests for the three-day event. --lv sun

Yes, most of those are doing it quite proudly but some are so drugged up as to be totally unaware of their situation.

I can probably make most of those dates work so long as we decided on 1 date within the next month or two, i.e. a month or two lead time notice for me.

I agree we should avoid any "big event" weekends, such as the draft.

I recommend the weekend of May 15- May 17. I will be out of town and that way I won't have to feel guilty for not showing up.

I'll cast my vote in this manner: I am currently open for every weekend under discussion, and May 1-2 is just fine for me. Put me down for that weekend because I am quite interested in a firm date being established for this, allowing me to plan other activities around this event. If something comes up that makes another weekend better for the group, I will be in for that, provided I have not signed up for a conflict by the time that change-of-decision is made.

I just realized - May 2 is Kentucky Derby day.

Then again, that's five weekends in a row with "events":
4/25 - NFL Draft
5/2 - Kentucky Derby
5/9 - Mother's Day
5/16 - Electric Daisy Carnival
5/23 - Memorial Day
Also, last year's was on Mother's Day weekend, and it wasn't too bad, unless you tried to get a table at a reasonably upscale restaurant on Sunday.

I think there is as much consensus as there is ever going to be on May 1.

Would anyone like to step up and take charge?

Also, I thought the idea of having a group suite was a pretty good idea. However, I have no pull this year, at least not at this time. What do you think of the idea of getting a large suite at a low-end downtown property and all chipping in for it?

With regard to Mrs. Doc, mqw4flotus, Minty's lovely lady, SOOPOO's wife, DRich's wife, and others that might fit in with such a group, maybe there should be a WoV Auxiliary, for those who are anticipated to be in town for the Spring Fling but who are not necessarily all that into gaming, math, trivia, or other such nerdy topics. They might all have fun together, just mocking their significant others. Perhaps it would even be possible for the Wizard's wife to step out of anonymity and offer some consoling words to these ladies. ;-)

I am proud to be called that.

Yes, she definitely doesn't mean it in a derogatory way. She knows I am a nerd, and she is a nerd too.

Whats the Spring Fling? I'll be teaching that weekend so I won't be able to attend. I do have to get back to Vegas and see my friends one day, I haven't been to Vegas in 6 or 7 years. Funny I use to live within walking distance to the Wizard. I don't miss the city though, Reno is 200% better in every way, except for having A level live entertainment.

WoV members get together for a dinner, usually some gambling, sometimes day before hiking or bike ride or something like that. In Vegas of course.

I like Reno but the airport would be a limiting factor for me. Just not enough direct flights and very few international flights.

True, but again its such a small airport, you can be at any Reno hotel within 30 minutes once you leave the jetway. This includes getting your bags, renting a car and the 5-10 minute drive to the hotel.

Sadly, organizer SOOPOO is out. Will be in Richmond, Va, that weekend. You have to make compromises in life.....
