Flight out of DTW this morning on Delta. It was uneventful but delayed about a half hour due to the flight crew’s inbound flight coming in late. After the hellish weather we’ve been having here the last two days, a half hour delay was fine with me.
Took a Lyft to the Encore. Arrived around 11:15 and there was no one in the check in line. They had a room ready for me on a lower floor. Based on my prior stays here, I was expecting to have to wait a while for a room to be ready. So I happily accepted the room on the lower floor.
The room:
This view TRIGGERS me! (Just kidding).
Went to the spa for a bit to relax. The steam room was way hotter than it was the last time I stayed here, which is a good thing. I like a hotter-than-hell steam room. After detoxing in the spa, I walked over to the Venetian food court and ate at Chipotle.
Then I came back to the Encore and played Pai Gow Poker for about an hour. Table was a $15 min. Nothing exciting to report. I got A LOT of straights, but not much else. Left the table after an hour or so completely even. Had a few drinks (drinks are good here at the Encore).
I don’t really have any specific plans for this trip other than a lot of Pai Gow. I’m just here for a getaway on my birthday (tomorrow). Might go see Gwen Stefani at PH on Wednesday.

good to know. We will be at Planet Hollywood in Oct without kids. I will be at a conference and wife will be tagging along. I should look to see what I can get for her as a surprise. I wonder if $200 can get a decent amount of services. Sorry AMS to hijack.
Quote: FleaStiffRarely free, but often steeply discounted if you book EARLY with a trainee. Couples massages can be a bargain. There is usually a web page that gives "spa etiquette" hints.
like don't turn over onto your back?
Quote: TigerWuCan you verify the status of Pai Gow Tiles while you're there? Last time I asked, I think they said they only open it for high rollers, if they even still have it at all.
I’ve never even seen a Tiles table at the Encore. Unless it’s in the high limit area. I can look tomorrow. I know the Wynn side has one and it’s usually $100 min.

I don’t get massages or anything, I just do the day pass. How much it costs depends on how nice the hotel/spa is. Encore is $40/day or you can pay $110 for three days. Encore is the nicest spa I’ve been to so I have no problem paying for it.
It gets you access to all the amenities (steam room, sauna, hot tubs, cold plunge, showers, toiletries, juices/bottled water).
I ate at the MGM buffet (free from MyVEGAS). Holy crap was the buffet awful. I would have been pissed had I paid the $42 + tax they were charging for this thing! It was free and I still felt like I wanted my money back. I struggled to find anything actually edible to put on my plate. I’ve eaten there many times before and it’s never been particularly good, but it was never this bad either.
After that debacle I Monorailed it down to SLS to play some cheap Pai Gow. They now have one table of Face Up PGP. And they use the dice to select which spot goes first which I like. That was the table that actually had people playing at it so I decided to join in. It was a $10 minimum table. First few hands I lost so I moved seats. Then I got the “joker spot.” I got the joker over and over again. It became a running joke at the table. And yet I still couldn’t make much out of it.
I played for a couple hours and lost my $100 buy in. But it was a fun table so it’s hard to complain. I liked all the dealers I had and the drink service was great - the waitress kept them coming regularly and they were pretty strong. I’m not a big drinker (I pretty much only drink in Vegas when I’m gambling and it’s free). I’ve always had a REALLY high tolerance for alcohol. I think I had three long islands and a couple of White Russians and I was feeling pretty tipsy when I left the table.
So after that I monorailed it back to the Harrahs stop and walked through Harrahs. At this point I was getting hungry because of my lack of being able to engorge myself at the MGM buffet earlier so I grabbed a slice of pizza at that pizza place between Harrahs and Casino Royale.
I hope you like pics of mediocre food court pizza!!
After that I came back to the room. When I checked in the lady warned me that I’m on the loud side of the Encore and there would be nightclub music till 4am. I heard nothing. I don’t think the club was going last night.
All the rooms come with an Amazon Echo so I had Alexa play thunderstorm noises and I promptly fell asleep. Then I woke up at 4am because I get up at 7am back east for work every morning and I’m just wired to get up at 7.
Today is my birthday. No plans other than to relax at the pool and go down to Park MGM/Excal/Luxor to redeem the freeplay they give you on your bday. And more Pai Gow of course.
This amused me:

Last time at the Wynn they let me play $50, it might have even been $25, at the $100 table when I was the only player there. There was no Tiles game in the Encore.
I've stayed in both Wynn and Encore. Can't really describe why but I liked Wynn better. Could have just been random variance....
I am hoping wifey lets us stay at Rio (nearly free) next trip versus $300+ at Wynn......
Edit..... Happy birthday!
I know much about buffets is subjective, but this sort of comment is the greatest asset of this forum. Thank youQuote: ams288I ate at the MGM buffet (free from MyVEGAS). It was awful 20 years ago, it's
always been awful. I thought
everybody knew that. The
only buffet I eat at in Vegas
is the one at Golden Nugget.
Average price and great food.

Yeah MGM wasn't great in 2015 either. Especially since we got ourselves in a 2 free buffet scenario that we needed to consume in 2 nights. The 2nd night was really rough. One of the best MLife buffets is Aria, and it still has off days. Best buffet I've had overall is Bacchanal. Never tried Wynn.
And I have been a fan of that sign in the Venetian/ Palazzo area for awhile now.
Haven't been to the Rio "Carnival World" seafood buffet since about ten years ago, but used to like that one a lot too.
Downtown the Golden Nugget buffet has always been fine, although haven't been to that one in some years.
Some buffets definitely have gone downhill, such as Aladdin/Planet Hollywood Spice Market, used to like that one a lot but starting in 2018, it went severely downhill. Supposedly they intend to pick it up again and improve, dunno if they have yet or not.
The Wynn buffet has been good during when we were going there around ten years ago, and very recently too. Definitely like the Wicked Spoon buffet at Cosmo, been there a lot last year and this year. Ate a couple times at the "new" T.I. buffet end of last year, and while it seems to emphasize more "home style cooking" with chicken pot pies and the ilk, it was fine too.
Any buffet, even the greatest, gets to be a little much if you partake of it more than a couple of times in one week.
Still, calling the MGM buffet "awful" is a bit much - I'd reserve the word "awful" for something like the Sahara buffet towards the end of its lifetime in 2009 or so.
Quote: DRichI don't think I have ever been to a buffet that I thought was awful. If I can find at least one thing to eat I am content. Usually I am good just at the carving station getting turkey, ham, or beef.
I was the same way until we went to golden nugget last year. Worst buffet ever

The buffet that Chevy Chase goes
to in Vegas Vacation is better than
CC. "Try the bread pudding, it's nice
and watery today."
Woke up early. Ate a bagel for breakfast. Went to the spa again. Took a Lyft down to Park MGM and got my $25 birthday freeplay. Walked to Excalibur and got my $20 birthday freeplay from them. Went to Luxor and spun the freeplay wheel and it landed on $5. 🙄
I think I only turned all that into like $37 or something playing crappy paytable VP.
Came back to the Encore, played PGP here for a couple hours. Ended up losing like $200. Boo.
Went to the pool. It was not crowded at all. That’s one thing that’s great about the Encore pool, in all the times I’ve stayed here it’s never been crowded. Most strip pools you have to battle to the death to get a chair. It got cloudy so I went back to the spa.
By the time I got back to my room it was almost 8 and I realized that I hadn’t eaten since that bagel for breakfast. So it was time for another buffet. Went to the Mirage. Had another MyVEGAS freebie. Much better buffet than MGM. Although beer and wine are no longer included in the price at the Mirage buffet. This is a recent development.
After that I wondered around A LOT looking for a decent Pai Gow table to play. Went to SLS. No one there. Face up table closed. Went to Westgate. Depressing casino. Had no desire to play there.
Finally ended up at Harrah’s. Found a good table. Played with a nice couple from Wisconsin for a couple of hours. Got pretty tipsy on long islands and White Russians. Although you have to beg them to give you a straw. 🙄 It was a great session. Won back the money I lost earlier in the day at Encore.
By the time I was finished it was really late and I was hungry again. All the food courts I could find were closed so I ended up in that ghetto McDonald’s between Harrah’s and Casino Royale.

Where did I do that? I used to
serve iced teas and Russians to
very specific people in the bar.
It would be politically incorrect
to mention that group specifically.
Right?
Try this sometime, I drank it myself
all the time. 3 parts vodka, 1 part
Amaretto, and half and half over
ice in a bucket. (wide mouthed
glass). Amaretto is a delicious
almond liquor. This is a super
rich drink and will get you
hammered if you have too many.
It didn't have a name then, I
called it white Godmother because
a Godmother is vodka and Amaretto.
Use milk if half and half is unavailable.

Check out your entry on the suspension list from 2/9/19.
I’m blocking you until my trip is over.
So if anyone quotes EB in this thread I won’t see it.

I confirmed that Encore has no tiles. Wynn is still usually $100 min.

I can't even imagine what group of people you're referring to or how it would be politically incorrect.... Somebody help me out....
The past couple of days have been pretty much the same as the first couple: lots of Pai Gow and a couple more buffets. I think I already mentioned how impressed I was with MSS. I ate at the Mirage buffet again for lunch yesterday cause, once again, it was free from MyVEGAS.
Pai Gow has been up and down. Had some bad sessions and some good sessions. The bad sessions all lasted a while though so at least I got some entertainment out of them.
Played Face Up last night at the Wynn last night with a table of newbies. It was fun until the relief dealer came. She screwed up one hand where she skipped a spot while dealing the cards out. At the Wynn, the dealer flips their cards over as soon as they deal them to themselves so we already saw she only had a pair of 2s. The pit boss comes over and claims misdeal. I got a little pissy and told her we want to play this hand, it’s only a pair of 2s! She still ruled misdeal and we didn’t get to play it. Then a few hands later the relief dealer flips her cards over and deals all the other cards out and just stands there staring at the cards for a while. I was still a little grumpy at her and about to say, “Are you going to set your hand?!” and she fainted! She just fell backwards and landed on her ass. It was so awkward, everyone at the table just stared at each other wide-eyed like WTF just happened. She was okay though. They moved her over to the empty tiles table to recuperate. I left shortly after that. Killed the vibe at the table BIG TIME.

For just a day pass, Diamond is free at Harrahs and Flamingo. I paid a discounted rate at the Linq and paid a little extra for their salt “cave.” I don’t know about other properties, but I always ask if I get a Diamond benefit.
Third hand I got a royal flush. A nice way to end the trip on a positive note!

That drink with bailey's for the cream is an iron ranger at any bar here in MN. I think that's a play on the iron butterfly (vodka/kahlua/bailey's). Also, better make 'em strong because you're not going to be able to drink more than a couple because of the richness.

150-1.
They also had a $5 progressive bet that would have payed $2990 when I hit. But I never play that.
I like that you went to the spa regularly the steam room is an essential part of any Vegas trip. Steam room or sauna is a part of any day, at home or away, period, actually.
Not enough Vegas suites have a steam room in them.

Not comped at all. I normally play at MGM properties where I can get most properties comped.
This was my “splurge” trip for my birthday. I booked a good flight + hotel package deal with Delta vacations.

If it's not comped then I suppose playing something like Pai Gow where not expected to win or lose much is a good way to go if you like that game.
Happy BDay!
Sauna four or more times a week has a very significant advantage on weight, cardiac functioning and hypertension. I assume steam rooms confer a benefit as well.Quote: MDawg

Also, I forgot to post these pics earlier. I was the only one in the Encore spa one morning so I took some pics. Definitely my favorite spa in Vegas.
