I'm amazed at the lack of responses to the human toe shot lol. Maybe people have lost interest in the thread. We are in Penticton and tomorrow we drive to Vancouver. I will update from the last few days tomorrow.
Don't know much about Canada at all except that with global warming they are having trouble keeping the meeting place of the Canadian Parliament, The National Igloo, from melting. Watch out for moose in Vancouver: they munch on parking meters and even though helicoptered to Prince Edward Island, the moose all return to Vancouver in a few days.
Quote: FleaStiffI know Penticton had some really nasty fires and some anti American sentiment a few decades ago, don't know anything else about it.

It is actually hard to find igloos in northern Canada any more. They are used sometimes in winter hunting trips for shelter during the winter but that is about it.
Quote: PokerGrinderThanks for the kind words. I just do what google maps says to, not sure about the alternate route. You should make it to Dawson it's beautiful.

I'm surprised google maps doesn't select hwy 37 as that route is about 150 kms shorter.
Yes, the legend of the sour toe cocktail!
The legend of the first “sourtoe” dates back to the 1920’s and features a feisty rum-runner named Louie Linken and his brother Otto. During one of their cross-border deliveries, they ran into an awful blizzard. In an effort to help direct his dog team, Louie stepped off the sled and into some icy overflow—soaking his foot thoroughly.
Fearing that the police were on their trail, they continued on their journey. Unfortunately, the prolonged exposure to the cold caused Louie’s big toe to be frozen solid. To prevent gangrene, the faithful Otto performed the amputation using a woodcutting axe (and some overproof rum for anesthesia). To commemorate this moment, the brothers preserved the toe in a jar of alcohol.
Years later, while cleaning out an abandoned cabin, the toe was discovered by Captain Dick Stevenson. After conferring with friends, the Sourtoe Cocktail Club was established and the rules developed. Since its inception, the club has acquired (by donation) over 10 toes.
The original toe was accidentally swallowed in 1980 by a miner named Garry Younger, as the story goes. And in 2013, Joshua Clark swallowed the toe on purpose, slapped the $500 toe-swallowing fine on the bar and left. (The fine was immediately hiked to $2,500 in response.)
Just this past June there was big news in Dawson when the toe was stolen, but the guy wasn't very smart and left his certificate behind so he would have been tracked down eventually. He must have had some regrets as he later mailed the toe back to them.
The ritual is pretty disgusting as the toe must touch your lips to qualify. My wife didn't have the stomach for it but I will do it for sure.
I've not been able to log in or you would have had an opinion from me a while back. I suspect a lot of other people are having similar issues.
My only uncle was stationed in Whitehorse for about a decade. And my grandfather was a surveyor above the Arctic Circle for about 20 years. So it's been especially interesting for you to tell your travel in such detail. Thanks for taking the time. I wish the cards had been a bit kinder to you, but sounds like Eric was a good investment!
Cards will do what they do but I had so much fun on the trip. Eric is always a good buy!
I'm headed to Seattle tomorrow, I'm getting behind on my daily report but I will attempt to catch up tomorrow.
So, you were totally convinced it was the real thing?
Quote: odiousgambitI was going to comment on the sourtoe cocktail but didn't want everybody to snicker thinking I was dumb enough to think it was a real human toe - plus somehow I was thinking it was a new toe each time, duh
So, you were totally convinced it was the real thing?
It is 100% a real human toe. Trust me there is no doubt in my mind lol.
The toe thing is pretty gross, but I probably would have begrudgingly done it like you. Props for doing it! Did it still look/feel like a human toe at all, or since it was dried out with preservatives was it all fake like essentially?
Hopefully the poker turns around for you... I wanna see the POKER: at a PLUS number =). Sounds like you're having a fantastic trip though. Thanks for sharing!
read my earlier post on this page for the answersQuote: DRichHow many different toes do they have? Is there a penalty if you swallow the toe?

Thank you, I missed that.
Yeah. Even that Icelandic fermented sharkflesh was a stretch and I simply posted the info that sharks do not urinate letting readers realize what happens.
I think I'd bypass any toe drinking... I think I'd by pass even the worm at the bottom of the tequila bottle.
I've been in Seattle the last couple of days eating, gambling and doing touristy things. I've been slacking (not a lot of extra time) on my daily reports but I'm keeping notes so that I can post the updates when I get some free time, I'm heading east in the morning. I forgot how much I loved Seattle last time that I was here, such a great city.
My favorite poker hand was the one where you made a heart flush with a 7h in your hand -only to go to showdown against two opponents who then revealed they had also made heart flushes -but both with a heart lower than your 7! Given that the 6h and 2h were both on the board - that was a very unlikely out-come! LOL, poker can break your heart, but it can thrill you as well!
Quote: gordonm888I am one pf those people who has been having trouble visiting the WOV site, but I have just found this thread and I have read every post. I LOVE this trip report. Please keep posting - I will be reading.

I'm glad you are enjoying it. I'm really far behind because I've been so busy and then last night I was at the hotel just before 7 pm and the wifi was so bad that I couldn't post at all. I am hoping to update the last week tonight as I will be stopping in Spokane and I am currently only about 55 miles away. I am just having a coffee and waiting for the casino to open at noon.
As far as the flush over flush over flush I had A high hearts I will have to go back and look if I wrote 7 high flush by accident. I had nut hearts and the other two had the second and third but flush.
The poker game was pretty good although I got laughed at when I asked to be put on a list for a 2/5 game. I ran pretty terrible in the game and still only lost $140. I got it in pre against 3 different short stacks over the night with AK and lost to pocket 3's, 6's and 7's, never making a pair. I also lost AA<88 all in pre for a decent amount, I'm not sure why the guy was trying to punt his money lol. I also lost AA in a 3bet pot to 1010 on a 10 high board. Oh well, that seems to be my motto on this trip lol. Run terrible and then laugh about it, what else can you do?
Oh I forgot, I'm not sure from what but I broke out in hives early in the day. They weren't itchy but there were a lot of them. My sister the doctor told me I should find some Benadryl. The gas stations all either had nothing or reactine so I took reactine. It's mostly cleared up as of today but I still don't know what I was reacting to. Maybe ZK's spider came and found me all the way from Vegas.
Well I'm going to drive the 20 minutes to the casino and I will post more updates later on today.

I sure hope you're correct. But, you have to be careful about those "feelings," because it could just be gas (especially for the more senior gamblers, don'cher know?)

90% sure you just indirectly called PG little darling. 110% sure that's awesome:-)

Either something you ate or some creepy crawly in that hotel room. Examine things closely before you bring them home. Do a laundry on the road?
I always thought Canada was too cold for stuff like that to survive.

my home town is warmer than Las Vegas today and tomorrow and the day after that
global warming..... nah

Well, PG, I have enjoyed reading what you have posted thus far. Of course, it all involves casinos that I will never visit in my entire life.Quote: PokerGrinderWell I officially give up on updating this thread during the trip. ... I will post the TR when I get home next week.
In contrast, there are other areas of the continent where we have both visited a similar set of casinos. This Tuesday, my wife and I will be heading to Nevada in an attempt to recreate the trip that we had planned for last April but had to cancel. I think we will hit all of the same spots as in our earlier plan, except there will not be a WoV Spring Fling to attend. We'll be flying to Las Vegas for one night then driving to Lake Tahoe for three nights. While we are there we will drive a big loop around the lake and as far east as Fallon to add a few new chips to the collection and to replace some old tokens with chips. On our way back south, we will spend one night at the Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah before heading on back to Las Vegas for three more nights before flying home. I think you told me that the tables have once again been removed from El Capitan in Hawthorne, right? Guess my timing is just off for ever collecting that chip.

Yeah, it's supposed to be 90F today. Summer ended yesterday but somebody forgot to tell the weather that.

That rings a bell. I'm not at home so I don't have access to my lists but yes I think I posted that in the chip thread. Have a great time and I wish you good variance at the craps tables!
As far as the hives I have a few allergies so that is most likely what it was because otherwise Eric would have had the bug issues too. Hives are gone now and it's been a week using all the stuff in my suitcase so I'm not worried.

If you and your wife are not skittish, ask for the "Lady in Red Room". We stayed in it a few years ago.
Quote: PokerGrinder. Then in the top of the 15th the sox batted around for 7 runs and held on to win. I was insanely excited of course.
I was going to keep posting maps but I can't support a Red Sox fan.

Come on man. I was living in Toronto in '92 and '93. What do you think? I generally dislike the Yankees as well though I have enjoyed the individual performances of Big Papi, Judge and Sanchez this year.
I hope Minnesota buries the Yankees in the Wild Card and then the 'Stros mop up the Sox in 4.

Heehe...is one of them human toes?
As for the small town poker, what's the rake in a joint like that? With folks only buying for $20, how do they keep the lights on?
I didn't remember that you were from TO, well if it makes you feel better I was rooting against the Jays heavily the last two playoffs.
Btw I'm in Calgary for the night, I don't think I have the energy to seek out a poker game. Sitting at the bar having dinner and then I'll probably call it an early night as I have 12 hours of driving tomorrow.

Back to THE PEG?
If so watch out for the speed cameras in Moose Jaw along the highway...them green boxes are not traveler friendly
Quote: MaxPenStart a gofundme page so we can all pitch into the buyPGaHelicopter fund. Damn you have to drive a lot up north.
We'd have to raise a lot of money to also train PG how to fly said helicopter. The miles have really added up on this trip. The Yukon is far

Yes back to the Peg. Thank you I'm well aware of all the speed traps in Saskatchewan. I've driven this route a dozen times or so.
Road trips like that are the best, provided you don't want to murder your companion by the end.
This sort of thing is what the various poker sites are supposed to eliminate. What PG needs to know in advance is "How many Fish" but that is kind of hard to define and a rather ephemeral quantity anyway.Quote: PokerGrinderWell... 1/2 no limit max buy in is $200... six other players and they all bought in for $20... I felt stupid holding my 2 $100 bills lol.
Small local casinos often have a manana speed to things.
Unprofessional dealers? What sort of players were there? A rake free policy should bring in zillions of poker players.Quote: PokerGrinderI don't know why but I never saw a dollar of rake coming off the table. I was thourougly confused but why question the only good thing about the game..
If tired and dreading the morrow's drive, its probably good you did't try to play poker.

Or you could ask DRich to be your pilot. I have a standing offer from my employer for free helicopter use and flight training. When they found out that I used to fly Cessna's they offered me the helicopter training. Our company employees about five full time pilots but only one of them can fly the helicopter.
