I learned something new when I was at Revel's soft opening.

A $1 place bet on the 6 or 8 should pay $1.20, but gets rounded down to $1. That's why you're always encouraged to bet in $6 units. Ditto for $5 units on 5 and 9, where a $1 bet should pay $1.50.

EXCEPT dealer toke bets are rounded UP.

When the dealer at Revel told me that, he went on to say that he'll take that bet any day of the week. If they rounded down, most dealers would prefer their bets to be on the pass line. He says that even dealers who are not gamblers, I.E. the ones who prefer direct tokes over a pass line bet, prefer the $1 place bet if the house rounds toke bets up. It's doesn't take rocket science to figure out why.

But it gets even better.

If you PiggyBack it (player control of the original bet), when the number hits, the dealers get their $2, and your original $1 bet stays up. If you get a shooter that is hitting numbers, all it cost you is $1 per number, and the dealers will be your best friend.

Note, it DOES have one minor drawback: The rounding is not per toke, but per payout. I.E. IF two players both put up the $1 bet on 6, and 6 hits, the payout is $2.40 total, rounded to $3.

But that's OK too. As the dealer explained it, not a lot of people do that. So if two people want to put up $1 tokes on their 6 and 8, they just move one of them to the 5 and 9. Usually one or the other bettor understands the math enough not to object. And this works even if they don't have their own place bet on the same number!

This worked at every AC casino that I tried it at: Revel, Borgata, Golden Nugget, Bally's.

I would think that the box might not like after a while? How do you piggy back? In blackjack if I am going to piggy back I put the dollar chip on top of my bet and toss the winnings to the dealer, but if you put your dollar on top of your bet on a 5 or 9 I think the dealer would have to see it as a $6 5 or 9 and not pay the extra dollar. Help me out here. Thanks! Also, I would assume when you go to a new casino you have to ask if they will round up the toke, or I guess you could just try it once and see what happens. If you asked the dealer I just feel like the boss would get suspicious, as this rule is essentially robbing the house of the 50 cents every time the toke hits.

I think a $1 place bet on 6 or 8 should pay $7/6 or $1.16, but gets rounded down to $1.
On the newer Shoot to Win Craps machines, they round up to $1.17
The $1 place 5 or 9 should pay $7/5 or $1.40 but is rounded down to $1.
Looks like you are thinking of odds payouts.

I do not play much Craps but I can not see any advantage to "and the dealers will be your best friend."
I would rather just have them do their job to the best of their ability for all players.

Seems that even when players tip the dealers, the craps dealers still do not like working more than the minimum effort required and offer way too much unsolicited advice, as if the player is actually playing with the dealer's money. But if craps dealers only deal the game to get tips, then that explains everything.

And salespeople only sell to make a commission. Either way, people are working to earn their livelihood. You really think a dealer wants to stand there for $4-6/hour to entertain a bunch of stiffs?

Please don't let this thread turn into a toke / don't toke argument. Plenty of threads for that. This assumes that you're going to toke. As such, here's a great way to do it.

First off, you gotta ask if that $1 toke place bet gets rounded up in every casino you visit. Maybe even ask again every trip.

The box / floorpeople like it. After all, they all used to be dealers. So although they don't benefit from it themselves, they appreciate it as much as the dealers.

True about the rule robbing the house, but the house is allowing that rule, so why not exploit it?

How do you piggy back?

Simple say "Piggy back." For example, I tend to only place the 6 / 8 unless I'm shooting, or if the shooter is hitting a lot of numbers. At a $10 table, I put down $26 and say "6, 8, piggyback."

The dealer then takes the chips, places 2 reds, then 2 whites off-set as normal, then one more white, off-set a little more.

You're right. I said $1.20, which is what $1 on the odds for 6/8 would pay.

But if it's a dealer toke, those are rounded up as well. When I was the shooter and the point was 8, I put down my $20 odds, plus $1 off-set. I didn't even need to specify that it was a piggy-back toke. They already knew that's what it was because I was doing that on the place bets.

Interesting.

At Dealers School in PA we were taught that the four/ten paid $2; the rest were rounded down. And, rather than to piggyback, we were putting them in the middle of the box. As a practical matter, it would seem that piggybacking on a cap would lend itself to being knocked over by wayward tosses.

Is this something that might be Atlantic City specific?
