you put $1 on top of the PL bet, and added $5 odds behind. If the number hit, you will get paid $1 for the PL and $6 for the odds = $7
If you make a place bet for $6, you get paid $7.
You need to be able to do better than 5x odds to make adding money to the PL a better option than just making a Place bet.

If I remember correctly, that's the way I play the 6 or 8 point when I stay Downtown. Since they only offer 2X odds at the Fremont and the California, they allow that extra dollar on your PL nickel and then you can put $15 on the back. I think you can also have $10 on the PL and with a 6 or 8 point put $25 in back.
Quote: kenarmanHadn't visualized it that way. Simple to see now. My gut on the bet was right then, since I will usually place the 6 and 8 if I can't get them as a place or come bet. An okay but not optimal bet. Have you ever seen the bet made in that fashion elsewhere?
For the life of me, I cannot remember where I was playing, but it must have been some place that had 5x odds across the table. It was a few years ago. After tipping the dealer a few times, the dealer told me that with a $10 pass line bet I could only do $50 odds, but a $15 PL bet was treated like it was a quarter, so the odds could go to $125. That is almost 9x odds! So anytime a 6/8 showed up, I would add $5 to the pass line, and then add $75 to the odds, effectively giving me 15x odds for that additional $5.
Since most everyone has gone to 3-4-5x odds now, I have not seen anyone treat $15 bets that way. They only allow $75 in odds.

If you are betting $10 PL at the start, by all means, take the $25 odds (2.5x instead of 2x).
But if you only bet $5 PL then add $5 so you can go from $10 odds to $25 odds, it is a bad bet. Even though you are getting 3x odds on that additional bet, you would get paid better making a place bet. Pretty sneaky on the casino's part to offer that 'extra' odds bet for the player's benefit.
5 PL and 15 odds gets paid 5 + 18 = $23
$20 place bet 6 gets paid $21 for the $18 bet and $2 for the leftover $2 = $23, so it is the same amount.
However, if you just bet place $18 and take the $21 payout, you are getting paid a better rate than adding the $5 Pl and $15 odds.

Tried Casino Royale with 100x's?

The Craps Pithere features two full tables and a sit-down crap shoot. The two full tables featurea $3 minimum and a $500 maximum on flat bets with a $2,500 maximum on Free Odds, which are a super-generous 100x, the absolute best offering inthe Las Vegas area, even better than downtown." I played, expecting to see "high rollers" with the obvious benefit. Quite the opposite.
Quote: kenarmanI was in Calgary, AB for xmas and ran into a new rule at craps there. The tables were nominally double odds but with a few wrinkles. On a 6/8 you could add a buck to your $5 place bet after the come out roll and take $15 odds. Adding money to a place bet after the come out is usually a bad idea but I wasn't sure if this bet made sense or not. I was making it because I liked the increased variance it gave me. It would obviously be better to make the $6 bet to start with but it just seemed weird to make a $6 pass line bet. They would also allow you to top it up to $10 and take $25 odds. I didn't think that made a lot of sense but saw several players making that bet.
That's what called "Full Double Odds". The same as having a $2 Pass-Line and taking $5 odds behind it.
When I play at a 2x odds table, I just play a $6 pass line, so I can do that.
