1.) Do you ever see anyone buying the 6/8 at a craps table? If so, why? And if not, does it ever make sense to?
2.) Along the lines of a strategy, if a craps players has a tendency to bet the outside (4,5,9,10), but then take down his bets once either of those points are hit, does it makes sense to even bother buying those numbers and paying the vig upfront?

Buy bets are for more experienced players, so if you are new and want 6/8, the dealer will 100% of the time place it for you. The only players that know about Buy bets know that it never is a good bet on the 6 or 8.

Well you can't win either bet if you don't buy the number, but if you take a bet down that didn't pay, you get your vig back too.

Buying the 6 & 8 has a 4.76% house edge, as opposed to placing the 6 & 8 which has about a 1.51% house edge. Even if the commission is paid only when you win, the house edge for buying the 6 & 8 is about 2.27%. I think that most players simply see other people placing the 6 & 8 and copy them.

Buying vs placing?
The Wiz once wrote somewhere that you should never buy the 6/8, and always buy the 4/10.
I'm pretty sure the the key factor for the 5/9 is buy it only if the vig is payed afterwards. As I recall the difference is close enough that it's not really that big of a deal.

I have seen old timers do just that. The place better always makes the same or more money than the buy bettor for the 6&8 only. $30 place pays $35 and $30 Buy pays $36 MINUS the $1 vig so it is the same. Now a $300 place bet will pay $350 and a $300 Buy bet pays $360 MINUS the $15 vig for a net of $345. So a buy bet is a sucker bet for the 6&8.Quote: Asswhoopermcdaddy1.)
