For all the blackjack experts out there:
I was playing Spanish 21 (S17). I had a $15 bet out, and got 8-2 versus the dealer 8. I doubled, and got a 2. I said "rescue," but the dealer kept dealing, and exposed her hole card. It was a 4, so she had twelve. She asked me if I still wanted to rescue. I said no. She pulled a five for 17, so I lost the double down.
Did I make the right play?

Standing is indeed preferable to rescue in that situation, since the dealer hits a 1/4 chance of busting with the next card alone, and still has a 1/3 chance of having to draw again. Since a rescue will get you a quarter of what you get in the case of a bust, anything greater than 1/4 is enough.
(Although if you were allowed to redouble, I'm pretty sure that's what you should have done with a 12 against an 8.)

Thanks. There was no redouble. I figured I needed to have a >25% chance to win, so I did kind of the same quick calculation. She actually has only a 23% chance of busting right away (3 out of 13 ten value cards), but I figured the chance of her getting an A, 2, 3, or 4 and having to redraw tilted the odds in my favor.Quote: 24BingoStanding is indeed preferable to rescue in that situation, since the dealer hits a 1/4 chance of busting with the next card alone, and still has a 1/3 chance of having to draw again. It's easy to see you should you should cancel the rescue under normal circumstances, but I have to ask:
what was the count?

On Spanish 21, I imagine (though no math to back it up) that rescue is the correct play against a dealer 12, unless the count was extremely high.

It's hard enough for me to remember what the hell to do at this game.
Believe it or not, in the same game there was a guy taking insurance almost every time. I tried to talk him out of it, but he persisted. I think he lost every bet. I thought about offering him 2.5:1 to insure his bets, but I think the casino would have frowned upon that.
