Horse racing is in big trouble with lack of interest right now, maybe the hype for a possible triple crown winner will help.

I'll say possible but odds against.

Interesting article I like the part about the trainer being superstitious and he won't watch the race live. Paul Reddems can instill such loyality that some of people have been with him since 19 according to the article, must give them recognition and respect.
As for the Belmont. It's the only race I'm good at predicting because you can take any longshot that can get the distance and you've got a good shot. I'll be betting against I'll Have Another because the odds will be way too short. I'll give his odds of winning 7/2. He has the talent, and I will predict he will be winning at the 1/8 pole. But I say he falls short and finishes 2nd or 3rd.
But I'm wrong a lot.

The problem with the Belmont is, most of the horses have never been over the distance (and most will never race it again), and you're putting horses that are good at 1 1/4 miles against those that, presumably, have a pedigree for going longer.
But if you can get track odds, pretty much every horse except I'll Have Another should have decent win odds, if for no other reason than there's always some company willing to risk a million dollars or two by buying hundreds of thousands of $2 win tickets to sell as souvenirs just in case the Triple Crown is finally won.
Last year I hit a $2 Brooklyn-Belmont double with Ruler on Ice. $425. It might have ended up actually costing me a bit of money, because since I had the $425 will pay going into the next day, I didn't worry about putting any more money on him to win that day.
When the gates opened, Secretariat and Sham raced together around the first turn through a half-mile in a suicidal :46 1/5. On the backstretch, with jockey Ron Turcotte sitting still as a stone, the colt gathered momentum with every stride. He ran three-quarters in 1:09 4/5, the mile in 1:34 1/5, and when he hit the quarter-pole in 1:59, faster even than he had won the Derby, the crowd was on its feet, screaming in anticipation.
“Secretariat is alone. He is moving like a tremendous machine!" track announcer Chick Anderson yelled. "He's going to be the Triple Crown winner. Unbelievable! An amazing performance. He's 25 lengths in front!"
Prompted only by history and racing only against the clock, Secretariat was completely alone as he swept across the finish line an astounding 31 lengths in front of Twice a Prince in a world-record 2:24 for the mile and one-half miles.
As Charles Hatton wrote in The Daily Racing Form, "His only point of reference is himself."
There is a thread her about the best gambling movie ever. I had racked for Willie Mosconi 2 years before the movie THE HUSTLER
came out, so naturally I was biased toward that movie.
Was thinking about starting a thread about the worst gambling movie after seeing a horrible terrible movie on NETFLIX
Chazz Palminteri , Rod Steiger, Christopher Walken Not exactly Paul Newman, George C Scott, and Jackie Gleason
But 3 pretty good actors Chazz carried the movie Yonkers Joe on his back. Rod in HEAT OF THE NIGHT and Walken won a best supporting actor in the DEER HUNTER.
I was gonna start that thread but before I could, someone posted POOL HALL JUNKIES as their favorite gambling movie.
PHJ STINKS. Not funny bad, not bad, but STINKS.
If you have NETFKLIX see for yourself if you have a strong stomach.
I can only assume Rod was on his deathbed at the time and Chaz and Walken tried their best but had an impossible plot and juvenile
dialogue !
I'll root for IHA to take the triple crown but will bet on another horse at a price.

Some very nice longshots the past 10 years.
Just a matter of delay, and pace. At 12F, only the last 2 count.
Looks to be a winner, I vote yes.
Quote: JohnzimboIt's hard to say anything bad about IHA's jockey in the first two races but I feel his inexperience may hurt him in the Belmont. Even experienced jockeys have made huge errors in the Belmont by moving their horses too soon.

The "experts" said the same thing going into the Derby...
I think my favorite Belmont was Rags to Riches defeating Curlin. Birdstone was the toughest, but a lot of fun to watch replays on. Tom Durkin's call on that race is so good. He's getting ready to call the first triple crown in over 25 years, "But here comes BIRDSTONE...And Birdstone wins the Belmont Stakes..." as he hits the right amount of disappointment.
He's the best race caller in the country, and I would have to guess the world.
Larry Collmus - Current Triple Crown announcer is doing a pretty good job also.

The #19 post, and an experienced jockey - that's why I didn't bet on him in the Derby. He seemed pretty unflappable in the Preakness, but a Triple Crown on the line is even more pressure.
It's easy to figure why these horses seem to always be caught at the end of the Belmont. You figure the jockey is thinking "If I move too late and don't make it, I'll be blamed. If I move early, and the horse gets caught, then I at least gave the horse the chance"
So, like I said, I think he'll be in the lead in the stretch, the question is, are there any other horses that are good enough to catch him? I would have probably picked Mark Valeski, but Larry Jones says he's doubtful. So we'll have to wait on that one.
Quote: kenarmanI am suprised how little horse racing talk there has been on the forum since before the Kentucky Derby. Not sure if we don't have many members that are punters or if not that many people were sold on IHA before the Derby. Haven't even heard from Fin since the derby. What is the range at the Vegas books for him completing the triple crown? I did catch him yesterday for WPS, trifecta and exacta. Kicking myself because I forgot to bet the superfecta and had that horse as well. They didn't pay particularly well though, other than the superfecta that I forgot to bet sigh, since it was all the favorites.

Horse racing is in trouble because the house edge at the track is incredibly high. With more casinos popping up everyday, many gambler's are choosing to hit the casinos where the payouts are better.

As for the jockey being under pressure he has never seen ....I think what he has accomplished already has secured him financially for the rest of his life, seeing how LOYAL Paul Reddem is . Maybe 5% of whatever the horse is sindicated for will find its way into the jockeys bank account ...that should be just about enough
Greedy race track owners have nobody to blame but themselves. They have had the only legal action for oveer a 100 years in some states and as soon as a casinio open, the race track customers flock to it.
Walk into a casino, after parking free, get free drinks while playing, get rewards, etc.
Pay $10 to park at a racetrack, $5 to get in, $3 for a soda pop, $ 3 for a program, $5 for a form, etc.
And face a rake of 17% for WPS bets and 23-30% for exotics.
If downtown Baltimore gets slots, I predict the Preakness will be sold to the highest bidder within 5 years. Pimlico would have already closed except it is in a bad part of town and the property is not that valuable.

Mario's trademark in the 5 years he has been racing at Hastings was his patience and he hasn't moved too early in the big races yet. The nose he won by at the Preakness was close to being too late. My only concern is if IHA has enough left in him after some great races to last the extra distance.
I was listening to an interview with Mario and the owner who road for in Vancouver on the radio today. The Vancouver owner was the one who encouraged him to give California a try. The interviewer asked him what his thoughts were about trying the bigger market. Mario said 'I thought he was trying to get rid of me'. He won his first race at Hastings after coming up from Mexico where he was riding quarter horses and also won his first race for the Vancouver owner.
"I seen the dullahan myself, stopping on the brow of the hill between Bryansford and Moneyscalp late one evening, just as the sun was setting. It was completely headless but it held up its own head in its hand and I heard it call out a name. I put my hand across my ears in case the name was my own, so I couldn't hear what it said. When I looked again, it was gone. But shortly afterwards, there was a bad car accident on that very hill and a young man was killed. It had been his name that the dullahan was calling."
