The final paragraph of his answer has me intrigued. In short, he implied that there is a betting line for the Over/Under on the time of the National Anthem, but that the actual bet is not available in Vegas.
I understand why such a bet wouldn't be available in Vegas. It's not really part of the sport, it's part of the event, and very easy to fix.
On the flip side, although also not a sport, the coin toss is a very random event. Do the Vegas books take action on the coin toss?
He also said that this year's line on the Anthem is at 1:34, while last year it was 1:54 and the year before it was 1:42. Both of the last two years it went over.
If the National Anthem is not an available bet, where did the over/under line come from?
Considering that the last two lines were higher, and both went over, how did they come up with 1:34 this year?
They just look at past performances by the same singer (singer is known in advance). I don't know if they apply a "super bowl modifier" because people ham it up a bit due to the increased exposure, but that effect should be small compared to the singer's anthem history. This is obviously much easier now in the YouTube era.Quote: DJTeddyBearConsidering that the last two lines were higher, and both went over, how did they come up with 1:34 this year?
Quote: odiousgambitBrits might get to bet on it.
I bet it on bodog last year I think. It went under on their line. I bet the over as it was Christine Aguilera and in previous songs she used to warble the last two lines and stretch them out. She cut down the time on the superbowl.
Least as I recall
I'll probably hit a couple of weird props again this year.
Last February, I attended a college basketball game for which the anthem was sung by a quartet of harmonizing faculty members known as The Four Coursemen. They were quite good.Quote: IbeatyouracesWhat are the odds that the singer will screw it up?
During the game, one member of the quartet sat near me. I complimented their rendition and commented, "You guys don't seem to use the same lyrics that Christina does." He said that they try not to. He also said that they occasionally amuse themselves and confuse others by singing the second verse instead of the first.
I wonder how that would go over at the Super Bowl.
Quote: avianrandyJust as a side note,I seen on the Indianapolis news Kelly Clarkson will be singing the national anthem along with the Indianapolis Children's Choir at the super bowl. Was not sure if you had this information or not.Good luck on your props
Explains the shorter under.
I also recall that there was a jet fly by on last years Superbowl anthem, which make me believe there's a certain element of timing required for everyone to sync?

With a children's choir, I would expect the over might be a good play. They would stretch things out to make sure the camera had a chance to cover each of them.

Or they could take a cue from the Chinese Olympic organizers and get a beautiful group of kids to lip sync to a recording of a children's choir that can really sing.Quote: AyecarumbaWith a children's choir, I would expect the over might be a good play. Oops, yes, I knew that, and of course that makes it a non-factor. Unless they do it anyway for the outside TV shot... (hurgmmm).

Hmm, good thought.... Comrade. (insert Boris Badanoff laugh).
Nope. They merely monitor the broadcast for their cue.Quote: thecesspitI also recall that there was a jet fly by on last years Superbowl anthem, which make me believe there's a certain element of timing required for everyone to sync?
Those birds are moving fast, circling a couple miles away. Far enough away that they can't be seen or heard, but close enough and fast enough so that, on cue, they can turn and fly over the stadium in a matter of seconds.
Wow.Quote: DJTeddyBear... this year's line on the Anthem is at 1:34 ...
I clocked it at 1:34.1!

Somebody Won $50,000 On That Safety In The Super Bowl

The first-quarter safety that gave the Giants a 2-0 lead over the Patriots made one bettor a very happy man.
Benjamin Lyons bet $1,000 at the MGM Grand at 50/1 odds for the first scoring play of the game to be a Giants safety. And now he's rich.

I went in the end for a safety to be scored in the game at 13/2. Mostly as I like safeties.... so i was happy with a small win there.
