Yes, I know what the thread is about, I'm just saying AT THIS POINT, I like Balt. and GB. Its halftime, my Packers look TERRIBLE.

J/K, but you're on thin ice ;)
But anyway, looking ahead it's interesting to bring up patterns. No NFC team has repeated as Super Bowl champion in a very long time. Not just that none has won the big game twice in over a decade, but none have even gone twice to the Super Bowl in over a decade. Based on that, the Giants will lose to San Francisco next week.
On the other hand AFC teams have been regulars at the Superbowl this past decade and change. Notably the Patriots, who've also won it most. Based on that, well, as long as they don't play the Giants again... :P
Finally, never in the history of the Universe have brothers coached opposing teams at the Super Bowl (that's how the media will hype it). So there's that aspect of SF vs Baltimore to look forward to (or to dread).
At this point I favor a Giants vs Pats rematch, but I suspect the Niners will pull off a surprising victory.
I would give a years pay for 60 minutes and a jersey. Just one fair opportunity to permanantly remove that man from my television.
The only thing that will make me feel better is to see the Pats lose in the Super Bowl, hopefully to SF.

Does it have anything to do with losing a big bet?
Quote: EvenBobDoes it have anything to do with losing a big bet?
Yes, I did have Ravens money line at +297. However, it doesn't help that the Ravens are my favorite team, and that the Patriots and Cowboys are my least favorite -- I can't decide which team annoys me more. So I'm sick for all three reasons.
What a horrible Chinese New Year this turned out to be.

Oh, come on. Brady's avenged the Steelers twice in two weeks. That's not so bad. And if he wins another SB ring, he, and Bellichick, will have equaled Bradshaw and Knoll. What's not to like about such a Steeler-like team? Even if they don't run, their offense is second-rate and they pass more in a season than Bradshaw ever dreamed possible.
And the Niners also beat the Steelers this year. So I wouldn't mind seeing the Pats kick them around at Indianapolis one bit :P

I can't help it.

Again, I don't mind the Patriots. I don't even mind Darth Hoodie. But it is infinitely more probable that FrG will publicly denounce the Christ Jesus than I will be able to tolerate anything about Sir Tom of Brady.
Everyone's got a certain amount of crazy. This is mine.
60 minutes. That's all I ask.

Not that I like the Ravens what with being a Steeler Fan but I dislike the Pats more.
I'd like to se the SB Final score along the lines of:
Giants 32
Patriots -2
Yeah, I hate Billicheck that much.

Amen brother. It isn't that I like the Giants or Niners, I just want to see either one wipe that smug grin off of Brady's face, and I can't stand it when the Patriots win a Super Bowl and Billicheck doesn't even smile.

We still have that double or nothing soul bet pending. How about I win it back if the Pats win the Super Bowl, I pay you, oh, $100 if they lose, whoever they wind up playing against?

That doesn't sound fair to you, compared to our last wager, unless the value of your soul went up.
What a horrible football day. Both teams I wanted to win lost, and the spread on the Super Bowl looks like it is going to be Pats -3. A close contest is going to be bad for props.

It did go up. Remember I got credit for a miracle? ;) But if you have other ideas, I'd be interested to hear them.

Well, at least your team didn't lose, through their own poor planning, against an upstart with delusions of grandeur.
I don't even want to watch the SB now... this is so upsetting.
Maybe there will be a tie like in the MLB All Star game a few years back. That would be a good result. I think I'll be watching Animal Planet's annual "Puppy Bowl" instead.
Quote: duckmankillaAs a Jets fan, this is the worst possible superbowl outcome. I said before the playoffs began, as long as it isnt Giants v. Patriots I could at least root against one team. As it stands, I don't know who i'm supposed to hate more.
And they can't even tie.
You could root for a Pyrrhic victory, for either team, but that would be in very bad taste. So, I guess that leaves you with three alternatives:
1) find your hometown loyalty and pick the Giants (not likely)
2) find your conference loyalty and pick the Pats (also not likely)
3) forgo watching the game (possible, but try ans skipping the hype)
In any case, you can blame the Dallas Cowboys. had they not iced their kicker against Arizona, or ahd they beaten the Giants in their last game, you wouldn't be in this quandary.
I could blame the Cowboys, but I could also blame the Jets as we could have slaughtered the Giants hopes and dreams in week 16. I could also blame Billy Cundiff for missing a 32 yard field goal, or, as you suggested, the Cowboys for basically their entire season (including their week 1 loss against the Jets).
Despite my hatred for the Patriots and Giants, I think I know less people that are Patriots fans, therefore I am inclined to think that I maybe want them to win, but in a terrible fashion. Less people to deal with that way. Something like a 2-0 game with Brady throwing 8 interceptions, Eli pouting so much that he needs surgery to correct the pout, Coughlin being irritable from his hyperactive case of hemmorhoids, and Belichick... well probably remaining emotionless.
*sigh* i'm gonna need a few adult beverages to get through that game.
I'm cheering for the non-New York team this time around.
Which one is that? New Jersey or Massachusetts?Quote: thecesspitGod-damn it all.

Or you could blame the Cowboys.
That's my plan this year - just learning how to ski so I'll worry less about taking out a class of 5 year olds on the blue runs.

The one that doesn't have "New York" in it's title, smarty pants :p
One thing that could cheer me up Wizard is that if you are indeed in possesion of Nareed's soul I'd be interested in some action on a bet for it. I know a guy who would be very interested in having it.

Nareed wants to win it back based on the Super Bowl. If the Patriots win it looks like he will be getting it back, if I understand the bet correctly. We're discussing it by PM. So, you may have a fair shot at it once it is his again to bargain with.

Honorable mention to all who at least picked one team to be in it.
And congrats to ck1313 for correctly picking the Patriots to lose.
In case you're wondering, I never got in on this. I'm such a non-fan that the only way I can be sure of picking one from each conference is to pick my home teams: Giants and Jets. Damn! I could have been on the honerable mention list!
Sure, it makes sense that the divisional champs go to the post season. But then you get aberrations like the Giants at 9-7 hosting a wild card team with a better record. Of course they onw. And of course they then won two more games on the road, and then the Super Bowl. Didn't they know a 9-7 team isn't supposed to do that?
Oh, well. I'll play a long shot against next year. We'll see how things shake out during the off season. I'm hopeful the Steelers will hire an offensive coordinator who will mind the O line. Too bad Wisenhunt is unavailable...
In the meantime here's an interesting question: what are the odds that at least one team will play a Super Bowl in its home stadium in the next 10 years? Considering two hosts already scheduled are New Orleans and New York, I'm tempted to say they're good.
Quote: thecesspitSteelers just hired Todd Haley as their new Offensive co-ordinator.
For once I'm not asking this ironically: Who?
Never mind. I'll read about it on the web.

I've been saying this about the NFL Playoff rules for awhile now. I think the format of who is allowed into the playoffs can stay the same, but I firmly believe that seeds should be based on record only and not on winning your division. Winning your division should automatically guarantee that you make the playoffs, but it should NOT guarantee that you get the 1-4 seed. If you are a team with a crappy record (8-8 or 9-7), you should be subjected to one of those wild card spots and a team with a better record (say the 12-4 Ravens this year) should be placed higher up on the list.
I understand people who say "yeah but the tougher divisions are going to struggle to win more games because they have to play tougher opponents", and to that, I say bull. Look at those Ravens from this year, they had to play the Steelers and the Bengals twice (who were surprisingly good with Dalton this year) and still came away with a 12-4 record. This would make the League so much more interesting and would prevent situations like what happened with the Texans at the end of this past season where they were 10-5 going into week 17 and had the #3 seed locked up so they just decided to rest everyone. If the format was changed, with the Patriots being 12-3 and the Ravens being 11-4 at the time, the Texans would have had to play to try and secure the 2 seed and nothing would have been set in stone.
In regards to whether a team will play in their home stadium in the next 10 years, I'm going to say yes, just because in 2 years the New York Jets will be playing at home in the Meadowlands. Ok, that's a lofty goal, but one can dream :)
Quote: duckmankillaI think the format of who is allowed into the playoffs can stay the same, but I firmly believe that seeds should be based on record only and not on winning your division.
I've been thinking that, too. But then the 9-7 Giants win the Super Bowl. and before then a 7-9 team won its first playoff game. So...
Overall I think any changes would make things far too confusing. More than they are already. I think the day is coming when temas will need a lawyer on the sidelines, and then in the huddle. Of course the officials will have lawyers of their own. Then we'll have a blue "lawsuit" flag, except all lawsuits within the last 2 minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters will be done from the booth. and if you lose the lawsuit, you give a time out to the other team as damages :P

I wouldn't mind that. I like the Jets (I liked them more with their old new uniform than with the new old new one, though), but they remain the League's most promising team. That is, they always promise this year they'll make it <sigh>
Quote: duckmankillahaha this is true. We are the most disheartening team in football year after year. Drew Brees to New York?
I'm sorry, Have you never heard of the San Diego Chargers? Jets have been to 2 AFC Championship games in 3 years. San Diego always screws it up early in the playoffs.

All that kind of puts the awful performance by the Steelers last year in perspective.
