2022 WoV Picks Game Discussion Thread

Greetings!
This is just an update to the effect that what I believe to be 13 sets of Picks have been received with ten reminders that were just sent.
There's really no reason for me not to open the PM's, except it's easier to post the Picks if I can avoid opening any. Usually what I will do is just open the individual PM's in different tabs, and all of them are a darker color because they are unopened, then I can just go from tab to tab and copy/paste.

It would appear that JimRockford made Picks for Week 1, but not Week 2, so is taking a Skip Week accordingly.
The reason that is relevant is because it gets us to a total of twenty players, therefore, there will also be a Playoff Picks game this year if all twenty regular game players will commit to playing it when the time comes.
We should also have two additional players for the Playoff Picks game. Technically, I shouldn't disclose who, but I have had two people PM me and say they couldn't possibly remember to make all their regular season Picks this year, don't want to use Defaults, but will most likely participate in the Playoff Picks game as there are fewer weeks to remember to make Picks.
Also, I really do intend to do an NCAA basketball March Madness thing, at some point; it's just always tough to get around to it because I really don't care about basketball. What I will probably do is do one for the Women's Tournament, since that doesn't seem to happen often and I like College Women's Hoops better than Men's.

That being the case, I'm probably not going to do the Playoff Picks Game this year because I really don't like the Playoff game anyway and we do not have twenty players. The reason I don't like the game is because the sample size is too limited for what the game is, and no matter what set of rules I use, I always feel like not enough players are legitimately in contention for long enough. Every time I try to adjust the rules, it's just more of the same again. It's also too short to justify a, "Most Average," prize.
I think what I will do is commit to doing something for March Madness, probably the Women's tournament because I don't actively hate watching those games. I think I will offer up the same total of $250 in prizes that was offered for last year's Playoff contest...and I will be able to do Top 3, Most Average and You Suck.
In addition to there are several games, you also would only have to submit one set of Picks. The way it would work is that there would be points awarded for advancing teams, now, players wouldn't be allowed to create an impossible scenario, (ex. having two teams make the Final Four despite they would have to play each other for either to do so) but all they would have to do is take a picture of the brackets, or simply, tell me who you have advancing to each round.
That would only need to be done once, then we could just sit and watch everything unfold. I think that's a better sort of game given the short period of time being covered.

I picked Arizona and Miami. Luckily, those picks were correct due to massive late-game swings and wild endings. But I did spend most of those games thinking that those picks were a humiliating failure on my part.
So, yeah, the pattern is humiliation.
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

I had $400 @ +167 and $550 @ -110 on Miami (ML and +3.5).
Then, when the Ravens were up by 14 in the first half, I cashed out the bets for about $180 combined***.
***: I estimated the total value of my bets to be about $155 at the time.

I made an offer somewhere on WoV, that you could buy my picks (to fade of course!). One year I’m gonna be smart and just fade myself! In my real +EV (sometimes mixed with a little -EV) betting this NFL weekend I hit it out of the park mostly because of the multiple parlays involving the Bills. Biggest one was Allen over 1.5 TDs passing. Bills -10.5. Bills over 47.5. Allen under 40 yards rushing. With my boost it paid around 13-1. And I hedged on the O/U when it became apparent the other 3 were winners. I got my money in on under 49!!!!!!

I have never had a week with 4 O/U picks. Here was my thinking
Bears Under 40 - Predicted winds of 16mph this afternoon, minor line shift to U 39

Lions Over 52.5-Confidence Lions have an incredible high-scoring offense with below-average defense and Vikings offense likely to do well after their frustrating game last week.

Jaguars Under 47.5 Justin Herbert injury, line shifted to U 42

Packers Under 41.5 Both Packers and Tampa have both been in low scoring games for first two weeks, Tampa has a soul-crushing defense with multiple offensive linemen injured, and with Mike Evans suspended, Chris Godwin out and Julio Jones limited in practices. I do feel stupid going Under in a Brady vs Rodgers game, though.

I was just reading that the Tampa Bay game will probably be played in Minnesota.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

I just read that it will be played in Minnesota IF it is moved. Weather will be hot and sunny by Sunday in Tampa. But the ‘we need all resources pointed at cleaning up stuff’ so we won’t do the game here is certainly possible. I think if given even money, I bet on Minnesota.

This post provides some perspective on the performance of our WOV NFL picks contestants. It's been an unusually rough three weeks so far, filled with unexpected results in NFL games.
ESPN has an Eliminator game in which participants try to pick the winner of one game each week -(NOT against the spread.). They are eliminated from the game if their pick is incorrect, so virtually every participant picks teams that are highly favored to win (however, they must pick a different team to be the winner in every week of the season.)
Here's what has happened this year.
2022
Week 1 Surviving: 53%; Eliminated: 47%
Week 2 Surviving: 56.5%; Eliminated: 43.5%
Week 3 Surviving: 40.2% ; Eliminated: 59.8%
Compare this to what happened in the 2021 Eliminator game
2021
Week 1 Surviving: 70.4%; Eliminated: 29.6%
Week 2 Surviving: 79.5%; Eliminated: 20.5%
Week 3 Surviving: 91.9% ; Eliminated: 8.1%%
Again, starting with about 267K people in Week1, this is people picking a large favorite in one game each week.
The first 3 weeks of 2022 seems to have had a large amount of upsets. And this past week, Week 3, was especially brutal with nearly 60% of the Eliminator contestants picking incorrectly (probably due in part to the Bills losing.)

That's me...the defending champion...way down in last place. I have no feel for the games this season so I may just stay in the basement. Need to put in a skylight just to let some brightness in.

I just want to make sure my odds are correct, when using the following assumptions:
(I) Only two people were in the competition
a) "Person A" is on 11 wins and 9 losses
b) "Person B" is on 10 wins and 10 losses
(2) Week 4 was the 2nd last week (so, week 5 is the final week of the comp).
(3) You have to make 5 picks, and there is no such thing as a "confidence pick".
(4) "Person A" and "Person B" are both "random pickers" (in other words "50/50 pickers")
(5) There are no tie-breaker rules (so in this version there is a chance of a "dead-heat").
Using the above assumptions, I get these as the "rounded fair odds" for the "week 5/ final week" results (see below)
Person A wins: -165
Player B wins: +482
Dead Heat: +388

You can’t make an accurate calculation without knowing how frequently a tie (with the spread of course) occurs. You can do the calculation if there are only 1/2 point spreads resulting in no ties being possible.
