The time has once again arrived for another WoV Playoff Picks Game!
It is actually very difficult to create a set of Rules for this game because I wish for it to give enough of an advantage to players who pick well early going into the Super Bowl, but I also don't want people to have virtually no chance to win after one or two weeks.
Anyway, I think I have found a balance for this, so the Rules are as follows:
How to Play:
1.) Anyone is welcome to play, but only participants in the 2016 WoV Picks Game, or in the 2016 Picks Game Discussion Thread will receive PM reminders on Wednesday night (tonight) to make their Picks. After the Wild Card weekend, all Members who participated in Wild Card weekend will receive reminders. To play, simply PM your Picks to me before the deadline.
2.) The winner shall receive a prize of $125.
3.) I will be playing and defending the $125.
4.) PlayYourCardsRight, who won the, 'You Suck,' prize in this year's WoV Picks game has kindly decided to donate $25 to this game and create a new, 'You Suck,' prize for this game.
5.) I am eligible to win the, 'You Suck,' prize. PlayYourCardsRight is defending the, 'You Suck,' prize and is eligible to win the top prize.
6.) This prize has no entry fee. Side bets are permitted, of course, but I will in no way be Administrating or acting as an intermediary for any side bets.
Making Picks:
1.) The Lines for each week will be posted Wednesday Evening before the weekend of the games being played. For each game, there shall be a Point Spread and an Over/Under, every player MUST make picks for the Point Spreads and Over/Unders of every game, there are no Confidence Picks.
2.) The winner will be determined by whoever scores the most points, how points are scored is as follows:
Wild Card + Divisional Playoffs: 1 Point for Every Correct Pick (8 Points Per Week)
Conference Championships: 2 Points for Every Correct Pick (8 Possible Points)
Super Bowl: 4 Points for Every Correct Pick (8 Points Possible)
Furthermore, for the Super Bowl, there will be ten questions based on Props that will be worth one point each. Thus, a perfect score will be 42 Points.
3.) Tie-Breaker
-When making your first set of Picks, you must send me your prediction for the Super Bowl Match-Up and final score. In the event that either or both teams do not make it to the Super Bowl, if that is the case for both players, it will come down to how many total points those teams scored in the playoffs.
-If there is a tie for the, 'You Suck,' prize, then it will be adjudicated by sucking the worst, which means having your two Super Bowl selections score the fewest total points in the Playoffs.
Making Picks
1.) Lines will be posted each Wednesday before the games, Picks must be made BEFORE 10:00a.m. EST on the Saturday of the games. Reminders will be sent when the Lines are posted.
2.) For the final two weeks of the Playoffs, games are only played on Sunday. Therefore, Picks will be due by 10:00a.m. EST on that Sunday.
2.) Please Format your Picks the following way:
A.) No Line Breaks
B.) For Spread picks, simply put the team nickname and the spread. (Ex: Bengals +5)
C.) For Over/Unders, simply put the team nickname for EITHER team, and the Over or Under amount. (Ex: Bengals OVER 25)
So, a full set of picks might appear:
Patriots -15
Patriots OVER 52
Jaguars +12
Jaguars UNDER 42
Except the Jags are obviously not in the Playoffs, and NE will likely not be favored by quite that much.
Hopefully everyone has fun with this game, good luck to all!
Quote: WatchMeWinWhere are the lines? I must have missed that as well.
I'm on it right now.
Raiders +3.5 @ Texans -3.5 O/U 36.5
Lions +8 @ Seahawks -8 O/U 43.5
Dolphins +10 @ Steelers -10 O/U 46
Giants +4.5 @ Packers -4.5 O/U 44.5
Please remember to make your Super Bowl predictions at this time consisting of the teams and the final score.
The Picks are due by 10:00a.m. EST on Saturday 1/7/17.
The Lines will also be included in the PM reminders, which are going out now, because there are so few Lines.
Lots of early movement in the Lines, it'll be interesting to see if there is any more. Particularly interesting is the Raiders/Texans which opened at +/- 2.5 and has already moved to and past the three point spread.
Quote: Mission146The Wildcard Lines are as follows:

Giants +4.5 @ Packers -4.5 O/U 44.5

Thanks Mission! This will be fun. PM to follow.

Good luck, you're welcome, and I hope you have a great time! It's not a huge amount of money, so more than anything, I played around with different rule sets for the Playoff Picks Game to try to keep as many people in it as long as possible. Fortunately, I finally found a formula last year that seems to work.
TO ALL: PM Reminders have now been sent to anyone who played in the 2016 WoV Picks Game, or posted in the Discussion Thread for same. Because this game is only a few weeks long (and the PM reminders will contain the actual Lines) there is no reason for a separate Official Thread, so this thread is both Official and for Discussion.
we don't make a prediction for the winner of the super bowl, only the 2 teams, right?

You have to predict the score of each team.
Edit: woops, forgot it had been so long since I had hit quote I forgot to check for other replies.

Whoops myself. I read it as total score of both teams and had to resubmit. After having resubmitted because I forgot the tiebreaker all together. Poor Mission. Pays for all the deadwood in my inbox from him, though. Lol.

Oh nice, we have some trash talking in this pool! I like it! Im new so I will keep quite for a while and enjoy the banter between the group. Game on! Lets go Raiders Texans Seahawks Lions!
Wouldn't 3-5 be closer to 40-52 ? Bazinga !Quote: JohnzimboI am going 8-0 this weekend, y'all might as well forfeit now
Actually after an almost 2 hour 17 mile commute due to 1/10" of snow here in Dallas yesterday I had a cocktail when I got home and my inner Mickeycrimm came out :). I am usually not so confident but can't back down now,

There are no Skip Weeks.
I know that last year I posted all of the SB predictions at the time that the WildCard Picks were posted, and if you guys overwhelmingly prefer, I can do that again. Personally, I think it would be more fun for those to remain hidden and only revealed in the event of an actual tie. In any event, they are memorialized in PM, so if there is any question as to them, a screenshot could be taken.

I have two matters to address:
1.) After discussing the matter with WizardofNothing, he has decided to contribute the $75 to this contest thereby making the top prize $200. I left it up to him because we have 26 players in the pool, however, that includes the two of us. Therefore, we technically didn't end up with 25 unique players in the sense that he meant.
2.) Please PM future picks in the format that I have posted all of the Picks. I would have sent individual notices, by PM, but I would say that well over half of the Picks were not formatted the way I would prefer. The spreads and over/unders should appear on separate lines is the main thing. Assuming EdCollins is using his program again, that's the way the program likes them, to the best of my knowledge.

To answer a few questions:
1.) As you can see, we have 26 total players, but we only have a combined 44 SB appearances which is because four players failed to make Super Bowl Picks. At least, I think that is the case, they may have been sent in a separate PM that I missed. I'll check if anything actually ends up coming down to the tiebreaker.
2.) I was originally going to grant an extension on SB Picks, but decided that wouldn't be fair as the results of today's game could have an impact.
3.) NE/ATL may have one more SB win than listed. That player did not specify how much each team would score or who the winner would be. That player could still theoretically win the tiebreaker (in my view) by having both SB appearances correct. However, that player would automatically lose if they tied with the other team that picked NE/ATL.
4.) I might have done well to state this, which I'm doing now, but I hope it would be assumed: If there is a tie in points and each team picked one of the two SB teams, but one of the players picked the SB winner and the other didn't, then the team who picked the winning SB team would win.
5.) In the event that two teams tie and pick one of the two teams in the SB, then it would be based on how many points the other team they picked scored throughout the playoffs. If that is also the same, then it will be based on how close that player got on total points for the team they picked to go to the SB. If that is also a tie...I don't know, I'll figure something out!
No, I don't have an (Excel) "program" for the playoff contest, like I do with the regular season contest. All I have is a spreadsheet which contains no VBA macro code... just a couple of formulas.
I've entered everyone's picks into the spreadsheet. It is available for download here. Although there is no programming code, all you have to do is enter the spread winner and the over/under winner in the space provided and that's it. It will highlight all winning selections green, and does all of the math for you.
(It also contains last year's results, on the only other worksheet tab.)
I am glad to have more players, I was almost tempted not to do the Playoffs due to disappointing turnouts in years past. I remain continuously surprised when fewer than 100% of players who play the Regular Picks Game do not turn up in the playoffs, which is also the case this year, but at least it's close. I suppose it starting so close to the New Year could be the reason why.

To the first sentence, touche', but I imagine that EdCollins could theoretically write his programs in the Google Drive equivalent.
I appreciate the offer, but my laptop does not have a CD-ROM drive, thank you though!

Quote: JohnzimboWhen I said I was gonna go 8-0 I meant 0-8.
Right in the basement with you so far. 1-3. I hate o/u.
Did I mention o/u sucks? Lol...
Quote: JohnnyQLove the format. I wiffed on all 4 teams but stumbled onto selecting all the Over/Unders.
Thanks!
This format is here to stay, it accomplishes what has always been my goal of most players still being in it as of Conference Championship weekend. In fact, judging by the range of scores (2-6) someone with six could run the table this week (14) and someone with two could whiff completely (still 2), but the person with two could close it to 14-10 by picking Conference Championships perfectly if the leader whiffs completely.
Quote: beachbumbabsGod ,we're a stubborn bunch. All 4 favorites covered. Nobody picked them.
Did I mention o/u sucks? Lol...
I wasn't being stubborn, I picked the only favorite cover (Packers) that I liked. I liked the dogs and the points in all three other games, especially Pittsburgh. That fumble at the end of the first half changed the entire complexion of the game, and it was only made worse by Miami's fumble on the first drive of the second half.
Also, I didn't expect Ajayi to bust 200 on them again on the ground, but nor did I expect him to be held to 33 and a 2.1 rushing average. The Steelers had one Hell of a defensive scheme going, there was one play that (after the replay) you could tell two defenders wanted to make Ajayi think there was a hole, and then they just collapsed on him.
Of course, I felt that Miami and the points correlated well with the Under, (and I did get all four O/U's right) but all else being equal, it looks like the game would have went OVER had Miami managed to keep it within ten. It almost definitely would have if they had scored a TD rather than fumbled going into the Half, would have had a game total of 33 going already.

Making Picks:
1.) The Lines for each week will be posted Wednesday Evening before the weekend of the games being played...
I still maintain that this should not be called the Divisional Round, it has nothing to do with the actual Divisions. In fact, this is an interesting year in that exactly zero of the teams even share a Division, much less play one another this week. The Divisions were decided at the end of the regular season, which is when they are always decided.
The Conference Championship Semi-Final Lines are as follows:
Seahawks +5 @ Falcons -5 O/U 51.5
Texans +16 @ Patriots -16 O/U 44.5
Steelers +1.5 @ Chiefs -1.5 O/U 44
Packers +4.5 @ Cowboys -4.5 O/U 52.5
What an interesting week! I think it is conceivable that we see all the favorites win again this week, though I don't know that we'll see all of them cover again this week. The potential is definitely there for the favorites to run the table, though, especially given that one of them is such a huge favorite.
The Picks are due by Saturday 1/14/17 at 10:00a.m. EST
If you're counting Super Bowls, the Colts were 18 point favorites over the Jets, in Super Bowl III, back in 1969.Quote: ParadigmI noted Red Rock had the Texans +18 yesterday (and the MLB at +2000)...query what the widest final betting point spread has ever been at kickoff for an NFL playoff game, because that seems pretty large...granted the Texans are going to get crushed, but still!
The 49ers were 18.5 to 19 point favorites over the Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX, back in 1995.
I don't know of any playoff spreads larger than these.

Just to let everyone know, I usually try to get the Picks posted up within a few minutes of the deadline, but I have to take someone to a dental procedure, so that's not going to happen. I'm on right now because I was going to go ahead and post them early if everyone had their picks in, but we still lack picks from three players.
As everyone knows, I usually allow Picks provided the Picks have not yet been posted, but I don't want anyone to have an unfair advantage, so this should serve as notice that the due time for Picks is 10:00a.m. EST today and they MUST be sent by 10:30a.m.
Other than that, should be no blood, no foul, as I should be able to get the Picks up before the games start.
EDIT: Two to go. If they come in within the next twenty minutes, I'll post all the Picks right away.
