I've been paper betting the NHL to see how I'd do and I noticed that in a great no. of games the home team was made the favorite. I did some net searches and found that overall home teams in the NHL win around 56% of the time. I tracked the last 100 games where there was a clear favorite and found that the home team was made the favorite 72 times and the away team was made the favorite 28 times. Also covers.com has tracked this season of about 370 games and found away favorites win 63% of the time and home favorites win 57% of the time. They also found that away dogs have won 43% of the time and home dogs have won 36% of the time. All of this has to mean that the home team is way overbet. There has to be a gain by betting the away team but I'm sure not enough of a gain to bet blindly and overcome the vig. But a player carefully selecting the most promising away teams should be able to do well. Since the beginning of the season I have paper bet the NHL making at most one bet per day and often no bets at all only on the away team and I've gone 19-17 earning $338 based on bets of $100 for an ROI of 10.6%. This using betonline.ag's reduced vig. It would be about 8.6% paying full vig. If I do well for the whole season I will bet real money next year.
