I don't play slots much but notice that there are a few people at my local casino that walk around and look at many of the slot machines. They will hit a button to maybe clear the demo & must see something that either makes them walk away or play. Is there such a "tell" that lets you know whether a machine is more likely to pay out or not? Thank you.

Probably vultures. They're not looking for a, "Tell," they are generally looking for situations that legitimately change (or are perceived to change) their expectation to the positive. The Ocean Magic thread on here will give you a good idea of one such machine.

Perhaps they are checking if the glare from the overhead lights will detract from their slot play enjoyment.
May the cards fall in your favor.
