Slot machine play will return to downtowns Las Vegas Club and the Mermaids casino later this month at least, for 16 hours.
In order to preserve a gaming license, casino play must occur on the site for at least eight hours every two years.
In the case of the Las Vegas Club and Mermaids, slot-route operator United Coin Machine will set up 16 slot machines for eight hours at the Las Vegas Club on June 27, then move the operation to Mermaids for eight hours on June 28.

I wonder if United Coin charges for providing this service, or just keeps the entire hold?
Is there a reason it's 16 machines? That's like as many as Mermaids had before they closed... Why not just 1 to keep the set up and transportation costs down?

I believe that is one machine over the required amount to be considered a casino.

The rubble known as Moulin Rouge on Bonanza Ave. has been doing this for 60 years. What are the paytables like?

It's the difference between a restricted and unrestricted license. Unrestricted is 16+, while restricted is 15 or less.

Has it been 2 years already? Wow.
While they might actually get some decent action at this location, historically, they don't do much business. Sometimes, they do exactly zero business.
But that's ok. As long as they're open if the inspector stops by...
It's a paid service. And since it's done to protect an existing license, I'm sure the licensee is responsible to pay jackpots or keep winnings. But I also think the paytables are altered to make jackpots unlikely.Quote: AyecarumbaI wonder if United Coin charges for providing this service, or just keeps the entire hold?

This New York Times article has been one of my favorites since it was published in 2008 for a few reasons:
1. My first knowledge of Las Vegas was from watching televised broadcasts of the PBA bowling tournament stop at the Showboat Casino, future site of this 16-machine "casino."
2. When I was 21, my first visit to Las Vegas was for a bowling tournament AT THE FREAKIN' SHOWBOAT!!!
3. With video poker being one of my favorite casino games, I'd sure have loved to stopped by and tried my luck on those machines in the privacy of my own trailer casino.
4. Those video poker machines were comically outdated, even by 2008 standards!
