The fallacy of prohibition: Gambling edition
An Austin Statesman story today by Patrick George quotes police decrying "light penalties" for business operating eight-liner gambling machines, calling for harsher punishments and stricter city ordinances aiming to drive them further underground. However, Duval County received 9% of its annual budget from fees paid by eight-liner operations.
But there's a small catch...Of course the machines are illegal ...

As a follow-up, there was a murder at what was called an "arcade" but is really an eight-liner parlor in East Austin. The suspect may not face chafes due to self-defense. Here's an article from today's Statesman by the same journalist in the previous article:
