I stopped in at Diamond Jim's in Rosamond, CA today. They have $4 chips. I don't play a lot of poker, but I've never seen that before. Is $4 a common denomination in the poker world?

Were the $4 chips for play or for the rake? I've seen $4 chips in the trays before, but they are only used for the rake of the overall pot. Dealers will take 4 white chips aside, place them in the tray, and replace them with the $4 chip to drop into the box.

They were not in play at my table, or at PGP when I sat there. It looked to me like they were in play at another table (if that was the case, I assume they were playing a 4/8 game) , but I didn't investigate closely. I did buy a chip as a souvenir.

H'mmm.... a Tropicana chip for 89 dollars on ebay?
How much does a home made chip mold cost? I think it might be more profitable than panhandling.
It would be like those people that manufacture collectible glasses from the Kentucky Derby.

Very profitable! Don't take this as stimulation but in Brazil people bring back simple U$1 and U$5 chips from Vegas casinos and sell online to collectors for U$15-U$25; people are crazy, aren't they?
No bounce, no play.

Never saw one, but it makes sense to use them in $2/4 games. Otherwise there is almost always the need to make change.

Actualy, the $2/$4 game generally uses $2 chips.
$2/$4 is a limit game where the blinds are $1/$2, and the bets are $2 pre-flop and post-flop, $4 bets after the turn and river.
Therefore, it only makes sense in a $4/$8 game - which few casinos offer.
Bottom line, it's a rake chip.
I invented a few casino games. Info:
