Thanks for the interesting read on Pai Gow tile values in Ask The Wizard #269. It got me to thinking if the same analysis could be applied to the 13 ranks in a standard deck of cards, and the joker in Pai Gow Poker.

Sure it can. It's the same general idea behind hole carding or card counting, too -- each specific rank has a particular value relative to the sort of hands you're trying to make. In the case of blackjack, knowing that some of the cards are not present means subsequent hands have changed EV slightly.
