I meant to pick up her book The Biggest Bluff when I first heard about it and read an excerpt which was interesting. I am going to get the book now that I am reminded of it.

I am guessing that you have carried it over fairly well. I assume getting busted at the table is equivalent to death in life. You are not busted until you die.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

The Biggest Bluff by Maria Konnikova is excellent -both on the level of playing high-level poker, but on the "life-management" level as well. Highly recommended. Her starting point for learning poker was a complete unfamiliarity with playing virtually any card game (she didn't know basic definitions of hand rankings) but was a behavioral science researcher who wanted to better understand the behavioral dynamics of playing Texas Hold'em against opponents. She seeks out a top Poker Pro, Eric Seidel, who is very cerebral and does not believe in simply memorizing tables and following rules at the poker table. Seidel serves as her Yoda as Konnikova learns to "control the force." Much more enjoyable and readable than 99% of published poker books.
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

One point she made that stuck in my mind was how people are too resistant to "folding" (e.g. selling a stock, quitting a job, ending a relationship). There's a tendency to delude oneself and think the probability of a change for the better is higher than it really is.

Sounds like a variation on the endowment effect. Or maybe “irrational exuberance”.
The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; but that is the way to bet.

That is one of the reasons I quit picking my own stocks. I kept too many of my mistakes, convinced the public was mistaken, not me.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

I believe the key to life is knowing when to cut your losses. Far too many of my friends stuck it out in disappointing relationships or stayed in a job or career long after they should.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.
