Read somewhere that the Flush is fairly recent to Poker and wasn't a thing back in the West. Back then Four Aces was Top Dog.
Any poker historians out there that care to comment?

The older I get, the better I recall things that never happened

I'm not a poker historian, but a quick Google search finds this nice history of poker by David Parlett. He confirms your statements.

The flush itself predates poker. It is in older card games like Primero and Three card brag. From my understanding, if people were playing poker with a 52 card french deck flushes were known. The 20 card deck games along the Mississippi River did not have stuff like straights, flushes, or wildcards. If they were playing draw or stud with a 52 card deck it should have had flushes.
Assume the worst, believe no one, and make your move only when you are certain that you are unbeatable or have, at worst, exceptionally good odds in your favor.
