He should have been arrested. Instead he was feted with an award.
link to original post

The votes were counted and the winner's name put in the envelope well before the slap. The award was for work done well before the slap.

They said on the news this morning that the LAPD was aware of the incident, but Chris Rock had not filed any charges yet.

I have some sympathy for Will Smith, I would be irate if someone made fun of my wife's autoimmune disease on national TV as a means for improving his public image/marketability and reputation as a comic artist. I would not have slapped Chris Rock, but I probably would have spit on him. Some things cannot be tolerated.

Both actions, spitting and slapping, constitute criminal assault.

Rock has Smith by the cajones: the question is "How hard will he squeeze them?"

I think spitting is worse and not as manly.

Both were wrong.

But now there's a report Rock didnt know about the health issue. I dont know if that's true or not.

Fortunately it was a slap and not a punch which could have caused serious injury. Yet, even a slap can cause injury.

The whole event is shocking, disappointing and scary.

Next year there will be a plexiglass cage for the presenters to make their speeches in.

Kathy Griffin was right. It's no longer safe to be a comedian.

Imagine if some forum discussions were held in person? Wizard would need metal detectors at the door.

Heckle, don't slap a comdian.

Good grief, I have never heard of anyone, let alone an A-list celebrity, assaulting a comedian on stage over taking offense.

Amazing.

I suspect they'll "kiss and make up" and that Smith will make a substantial donation to the charity of Rock's choice to resolve things, but the devil in me really hopes that Rock pursues criminal and civil assult charges.

Lawyers love a target defendant with deep pockets, and Smith's are quite deep.

I'm looking forward to the jokes the late night comedians make out of this mess.

There’s a question whether Chris even knew about her alopecia issues. He may have just been making a joke about her head being shaved like Demi Moore in GI Jane.

In any event, not to minimize her hair issues…but this wasn’t a stage 4 cancer joke. If a joke about alopecia or physical appearance induces criminal assault, then Vegas better shut down comedy clubs.

Smith has now apologized for getting “emotional”.

Too bad it wasn’t emotions that was the problem. You hit someone, dude. It’s not called emotions, it’s called physical violence. He should have been booted on the spot, imo.

What if Chris Rock wasn’t aware and thought he was simply making a GI Jane look joke. An “emotional” person might have waited for Will Smith to turn and walk back and in a moment of “losing it” after getting slapped…hauled off and sucker punched him from behind. Then where are we?

Knowing that an alopecia joke could get them sucker punched on stage…I’m guessing there isn’t a comedian alive that will defend Smiths actions in any form.

And Chris Rock will be the hottest talk show invite for a first appearance. I think he's more likely to go with a comedic host than any serious interview.

I bet $5 at +5000 on Denzel to win best actor. I’m holding onto the ticket for now. Unlikely they’ll retract the award and then give it to Denzel but there’s a chance.
If anyone gives you 10,000 to 1 on anything, you take it. If John Mellencamp ever wins an Oscar, I am going to be a very rich dude.

Chris Rock probably didn't even write that joke. There are multiple writers for the Oscars.

I don't know who you bet with, but most (I think?) books will consider the event over, and your ticket would NOT pay off even if they eventually take it from Will Smith and give it to Denzel. I think the same happens when a horse is disqualified days after the event.
No one is getting paid for the wins Syracuse had to vacate, etc...

If they didn't take back Harvey Weinstein's Oscar, I doubt they would take back Smiths. I do think he deserves to be suspended from the group and not invited to future ceremonies.

I've been wondering during about this and this seems like a good spot. There is a guy in town who was one of three cameramen who shot part of a documentary that won an Emmy for something. His website and his business card call him an Emmy Winning videographer.
Is that a stretch?

I could be wrong, but I don't think they award an Emmy to the camera crew. His name has to be mentioned somewhere in the award.

If you are involved in the production of an Emmy award winning show you can get what's called a Contribution award if you were part of the specific thing the show got an Emmy for. So, only 2 or 3 people might win an Emmy for the show's wardrobe, but there might be a dozen other people working in the wardrobe department that would thus qualify for a Contribution award. You can get a certificate and a plaque instead of an actual statue if you are a Contributor.

I don't know what the etiquette is, though, for calling yourself "Emmy Winning" if you "only" have a Contribution award.

I have an Emmy for a TV documentary. I had a short segment in the documentary. I was named in the entry along with everyone else who worked on it including the main reporter, producers, and other reporters.

It was many years ago and I dont remember if the cameraman who traveled to Hong Kong with the main reporter was included? If I recall there was a separate category for cameramen.

This Emmy was for reporting.

I've never seen reporters get an Emmy for a cameraman's category.

Depends on the category. If it's Technical Direction / Camerawork / Video, the Emmy Rules say, "Emmy(s) to technical directors, electronic camera operators, video control operators."

Some are reporting that polls indicate that a majority of the general public supports Will Smith in this incident.

And by the way, any defense lawyer would argue that this was an unscripted moment between two fabulously wealthy entertainers on a stage during a reality TV event, that it was an open-handed slap and that no one was physically hurt and that neither entertainer wants charges to be pressed. There isn't a police force in the world that would choose to soil themselves by getting involved in this drama.

The real winner was the Academy Awards show which has been losing its audience for a long time.

On what I think is a very very remote chance it was staged, I'd have to give Will Smith an Oscar for that performance. The yelling from the audience really sold it.

Best meme I've heard, Is --

"Jussie Smollet is now claiming Will Smith hit him too."

The first time you hear the audience gasp is when Will yells the first f-bomb threat. This is when they realized it wasn't staged

His demeanor after the slap is almost as shocking as the slap itself. His level of rage is so high, like a sociopath. You could imagine Mike Tyson like this, but Will Smith?!

I don't believe those reports for a second. Anecdotally, I've personally seen almost nothing but Will Smith getting dragged through the mud for the past few days.

Less anecdotally, BetOnline came to the conclusion that people are overwhelmingly siding with Chris Rock on this one.

I'm pretty certain will Smith did this because it was Chris Rock.

Can you imagine if Denzel was giving the joke? You think Will would have gone up to Denzel and smacked him onstage or that Denzel would have had the same peaceful reaction?

I can name a number of actors Will Smith would not have tried that on.

And don’t forget, when Chris Rock hosted the Oscars in 2016 he went after Jada hard then too. So there could be some pent up resentment from then.

Yeah. Unsettling screaming.

The academy president did ask him to leave after the incident. He refused. I’m guessing to avoid a showdown they let him remain.

Oscars tonight
Obviously Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon are the betting favorites in several categories.
Looking forward to a early 4pm start. 1st time watching it in Vegas
Any casinos taking bets :-)

I saw Oppenheimer. Surprised how much it delved into politics
I was much much more interested in the scientists themselves actually developing the bomb
I was real disappointed they didnt spend much time on that
Wanted more Edward Teller and less Downey

Hoping Lily Gladstone wins best actress for Killers of the Flower Moon
Lol, I have to admit I did not see the movie yet
but
I read the book and its a very shocking story.
Good read. Well written
