Strangest Bets You've Made

I was reading an article recently about how gambling opportunities have changed so much in the last month or so. The writer goes on to describe with what appears to be increasing desperation, his hunt for something to gamble on noting the disappearance of sports betting opportunities and casino closures. He ends up betting on simulated basketball games some teens are running and a virtual marble race and wonders what's gotten into him.

What are some of your most unusual/odd wagers you've placed? Two come to mind for me, both regarding my dad. Once he bet that I wouldn't eat a kiwi as a child since I had persistently refused for awhile. I begrudgingly took a bite and almost got sick. The second one was him betting me I didn't know a song one day. I laughed and told him it was Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up and explained Rick Rolling to him.

I wagered about $ 600 to win $ 500 ( not sure if I know gambling terminology enough, but I would lose $ 600 or collect $ 600 + $ 500 more ) to lose 40 lbs on an on-line weight loss site a couple years ago.

Did it work out? (Pun intended)

In 2010 I bet a colleague that by the year 2035 Lady Gaga would hold the same status as a celebrity as Madonna did at that time. She was sure Lady Gaga would be just a fad. We even put a meeting in our Outlook calendars with a time and place to meet to settle the bet. I left that job to AP full time and forgot to make a note of when we were supposed to meet, so I doubt I will get the chance to collect my winnings.

My daughter age around 10 bet me that I couldn't quit smoking for two months. I was victorious and won the $2. She still hasn't paid so I figure with interest that should be about $6 by now.

I have an outstanding bet with a friend made back in high school.

The bet is the first one of us to reach 1 billion dollars in net realizable value wins and the other owes them a 2 week all expenses paid trip to anywhere in the world for them and their immediate family.

It was the 80's when 1 million was considered a lot so I figured 1 billion was so out of reach that we were both pretty safe.

(We were in the same accounting classes in high school hence the "net realizable value" clause.)

Because of its political nature I won't go into details but, around 12 years ago I had an over/under bet on how long it would take to close down the Gitmo detention facility.

When I first heard of betting on these simulated Madden and NBA2k games streaming on twitch I though it was completely wacky for people to do that. Then I thought it wasn't any more wacky than betting on a roulette wheel. The Vegas Vacation scene where they bet on a coin flip was great in part because the dumbest bets we can think of are exactly like most regular casino game -- coin flips, highest card, guess a number, etc.

Two atypical bets I can recall was betting on how long a pencil would stay stuck in the ceiling and how many letters in supercalifragilistic. That first one now reminds me of Billy Madison (I think) when they threw pickles on a window and were betting on which one would slide down first.

Amazing what passes for entertainment these days. Truly end times be coming quickly.
