Can you play any of their games online? If not, I think that's a big problem. They should be adding games like this to places like face book so when people happen to see them in casinos they might be more interested. Where is all the marketing for skill games? I havent really heard much about it as of late. It seem like more of a novelty than anything else. I have no clue why they cant/wont come out with some of the games people are actually playing now. Where is the skill version of games like Fortnight and Dota 2?

Yeah. This is the interesting takeaway. The consensus has been that this is the future and there's a mountain of money to made. Yet, so far, no one has cracked the combination to the bank vault.

yeah, after the hoopla last year of that 1st person shooter and the 4 person table games at Planet Hollywood in Vegas, the buzz just died out.

The video game comparison is interesting. In the early days, VG designers also floundered around trying to figure what people would like. It was an undiscovered country with no paths or guides. In that case, they got lucky when Pong became an early hit and put the VG industry on the map. Shortly thereafter titles like Space Invaders and Pacman spawned an arcade golden age (if you're in your late 40s or 50s you might remember those years with fondness) and they never looked back. Today, video games make more money than the motion picture industry. Yet, casino skill games havn't been so fortunate. There's been no breakout hit; no Donkey Kong or Asteroids or Missile Command or even a Pong. Nothing really.

Perhaps the analogy isn't fair. Video games were a new tech so their very existence was a novelty. Skill games are just trying to add a new dimension to that which already exists. Designers are really in the same boat as table game creators. What's a game that's fun, appeals to a broad swath of players, rewards skill and good decision making yet still lets newbies win on occasion, all while simultaneously giving casinos a steady money revenue? It's a tall order.

I think the player-vs-player concept (with the house taking a rake) is dead for now. Skilled AP vultures would swoop in as a game began and newbies quickly realized they'd be better off playing 000 roulette or maybe live keno where they'd at least have a minute chance at winning. The result? Empty tables on a path to nowhere. So maybe a game where the players cooperated as a team, although who would want to be the weak link with money on the line? Maybe games with smaller target audiences? If you like Scrabble try this one, and if you like first-person shooters try that one etc. Such games, however, have little chance of being the next Three Card Poker or Wheel of Fortune slot, at least in a brick-and-mortar casino format.

To tell you the truth, after my initial excitement over skill games, I now find myself skeptical (and moving towards dubious) that the genre has much of a future. Maybe some artistic and mathematical genius will someday catch the unicorn. For now, however, we're just stuck playing Pacman ... the Atari 2600 version. Meh.

I was at the Gaming Commission meeting yesterday. It sounds like they might have some issues if they try to bring their first person shooter game to market.

Moral, but the Gaming Commission basically dictates the Gaming laws. If they agree not to like it they won't allow it.

Foxwoods has Skill based gaming called the Gamblit tru station and has I think 5 games. My girlfriend and I played each of the games for a short time (because none of them held our attention for very long).

A quick summary for us was that for many of the games it was VERY confusing about how/when we were paying and getting paid, especially for the angry birds clone. And even when we did get paid, the payout were very poor.

This is from a trip several months old so I’m sorry if some details are off or wrong. If any of you have any questions I am happy to revisit the next time I go

Deal or no deal video poker: the least skill based of the set. PoK or better to get paid. One round of swapping where you pick your new cards from deal or no deal cases, and some cards in the deck you are not able to pick are already visible. While it only happened once, if you are close to a paying hand, you can get a call from the banker and accept an intermediate payout, for example if you have three of a kind with one choice left, you could take a payout between three of a kind and full house instead of picking. This only happened to us once. The animated girls are cringey. I’m not a big video poker enthusiast so im not sure if this is nicer or more fun than good old Jacks or Better

Lucky Words: The most skill based. Similar to an old game called text twist but you could compare it to boggle. Grid of letters, swiping words fills 8 or so meters. The meters fill at one space/ letter in your words. After the game each filled meter spins for a prize. often we wagered $1.00 per game and were never awarded more than $0.17 / meter for a $0.34 “win” because many of the spins were 0. If you up your bet you can activate a 7/8 letter word persistent jackpot meter. You need to get maybe 10 8 letter words but you have as many games as you want to do it. My girlfriend and I aren’t good enough at this game to find a lot of 8 letter words and the min. For these jackpots was too high. At least the wager/reward system was straight forward. This may be a good game for word wizards.

Catapult king: Angry birds clone with TERRIBLE graphics. Costs 1$/ shot at the castle!! Even Angry birds isn’t that aggressive with its in app purchases. There is some sort of persistent level based progression that stays with you the whole time you play but we just didn’t find it fun. One REALLY interesting thing is there are non money payouts in the form of “magic” that you can use in game for power ups. Many of the rewards were in game currency instead of cash. I think you get paid for knocking down soldiers on the first shot but we weren’t making money. We basically paid $20 to play angry birds for 30 minutes

Match 3volution: 2048/match three type game where three matching symbols merge to form the next in a hierarchy. It costs $1 every time you touch the screen. It took us quite a while to realize this AND took us a while to figure out how we got paid. Every time you match 3 symbols a small wheel spins on the right side. You have a chance of getting paid, getting nothing, something good happening like a wild card or a chance to move a bad placement or SOMETHING BAD HAPPENING for just playing the game correctly. When we did get a payout it was rarely more than $1 (but we did get a few in the 2-4$ range). Luckily my GF is good at these types of games and I think we actually managed to make around $6 but I couldn’t figure out if higher payout is based on higher skill or if we just got lucky. This game could REALLLY hurt your wallet if you are bad at this sort of game.

Pub Caps: I spy type game. My simpleton favorite, best artwork, although it does get repetitive and again we never in maybe 25 games got paid more than our initial wager. $1 per game, a field of bottle caps that were nicely colored for fake craft beers are laid out. The top of the screen lists 4-10 bottle caps that must be found. Sometimes you need to find more than one of the same and one time you had to find them in order. Not sure what triggered that. You have 20 or 30 seconds. My girlfriend and I found them all every time but we watched an old lady struggle before we played. Once you find them all you go to a screen and pick 3-5 bottle caps with prizes underneath(most have nothing) including 3 bonus caps. We never got the bonus cuz you need to get all 3. I can’t remember if you need to match others to get the prize but we never made more than $1
